@Tom

I think I came up with an alternate solution for Clutter, since I didn't need to

the middle light with a ball dropper and I didn't use everything in the inventory.

Alt. Solution

All you need to do is flip the fridg, laser, fan, several mirrors, laser detector, and kettle to see solution, no new inventory needs to be added

I hope to figure out your solution as well.

@beej

That was very clever. I see why it worked :)

I think I've fixed it in this version:

CLUTTER v2

Difficulty: 5/5 (hopefully)

{!3D"0"#1@$0"%0"&1D'1)(1B+0#/0?01910"20#50#61G71?81?90":0#;0#z0#?1?@0"A2@B0"C2)D0)E0)F0#J0"L0#M0"N0"O0"T0#U2%V1GW0#X0$Y0"Z0#]0#_0"`1(a0.b2.c3.d0?e2|g0#i1)j1)k0"m0#o0+q0"r0"s1Dt0"u1(v0"w0(x0"y0&~$4/-~!@"@#@+G,G-65+6C72?/@/A0I(JAK(}

One ball dropper is now placed in the correct spot, so there should be not enough to make the alternative solution work.

If you're interested, the solution is:

{!3D"1/#1@$0"%1@&1D'1)(1B+2@.0@/0?01910"20#50#61G71?81?90":2G;2(z0#?1?@0"A2@B1/C2)D0)E0)F0#J0"K0CL22M0"N0"O0"T2GU2%V1GW0#X0$Y0"Z0#]20_0"`1(a0.b2.c3.d0?e2|g2Ai1)j1)k0"m0#o0+q1+r0"s1Dt0"u1(v1(w0(x16y0&~-#,544%23/,6%~}

Flip the fridge, laser detector, right kettle, laser, fan, and some of the mirrors.

Sometimes one of the batteries is not really needed depending on how the physics turns out.

In other news, qwerty25's level is very good!

having played a number of really crappy custom levels, decided to actually put some effort into one.

hopefully it's hard enough for you all, let me know what you think:

@oesterle

Your level is okay. I figured it out with little difficulty.

There were quite a few items left over that I didn't use, and many things which are just red herrings, right? For example, I never needed the magnets to work, and you can't possibly set up the fridge to do anything when the blocks and fans are in the way? I prefer neat levels where everything needs to be used somehow; that's just personal preference though.

here is the solution to lvl 15 since some of you are to lazy to do it yourselves.

I agree, it's a nice game.

Here are two easy examples i made myself.

Here's a gadget-type level. Watch the total amount of charge in the network slowly creep up (if it works...)

Another level based on a network of wires.

AMPLIFIER

The solution appears to be very reliable.

Hint

When you've found the right spot for the battery, you need to wait about 4 cycles. The pulse that goes through the battery will get a little longer with each cycle until the battery is activated...

@Tom

The design of Clutter (2) is extremely clever and elegant. It is one of the best yet. There still is a shortcut though.

{!3D"0"#1@$0"%1@&1D'1)(1B+2@.0@/0?01911(20#50#61G71?81?90":22;0#z0#?1?@0"A2@B1/C2)D0)E0)F0#J0"K0CL0#M0"N1(O0"T0#U2%V1GW0#X3GY1GZ0#]20_0"`1(a0.b2.c3.d0?e2|g2Ai1)j1)k0"m0#o0+q0"r0"s1Dt0"u1(v0"w0(x16y0&~+3(24.#,442~!@"@#@+G,G-65+6C72?/@/A0I(JAK(}

Flip fridge,laser,fan,4 mirrors,kettle and laser receiver

You may want to consider pre-placing the light that powers the fridge and putting the ball dropper back in inventory. Just a thought.

I also liked Amplifier, you are very good at discovering the peculiarities of this system. Thank you for sharing.

@beej

You're far too good at finding shortcuts. Many thanks for your comments!

Here is a third version of CLUTTER, modified as you suggested (but with the ball dropper in place from v2).

CLUTTER v3

I think JIG could use a few tips on how to create levels.

1. Put components together to create a solution/system that works. Ideally the solution to the level should ALWAYS work. If sometimes the solution doesn't work, because of bugs or variability, mention it when you post the level.

2. Now look at the "something" that you've created and start taking away bits of it. The point of level should be that people playing it need to work out where to put the pieces that you take away from your solution. (Because that's the only game mechanic that Electric Box allows you to control.)

If you take away too many pieces, the level will become too easy because there will be short-cuts. SHORTCUTS ARE BAD AND NASTY AND HORRIBLE. Short-cuts will put people off finding your interesting and cool solution, since they don't need to do as much thinking to solve your level.

3. TEST YOUR LEVEL TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. Do this by playing your level, trying to solve it using as few items as possible or by not using parts of the level at all.

It can be difficult to get all of the shortcuts out, especially if the solution is really long or complicated. But try your best, because it doesn't take long to do it.

If you find a shortcut, you can get rid of it in a couple of ways:

A. Block it - for example, place blocks to stop laser beams, light, etc. Or use ball droppers as traps - like level 14, where you have to avoid making the ball dropper knock the target away.

B. Change the solution - maybe you could use a laser and detector instead of lightbulb and panel? Maybe you just need to move things around on the screen?

C. Change the freedom of the player to add items. Perhaps giving the player the ability to place a Fan AND a Windmill allows the player to bypass part of the solution? You could place the Fan yourself as part of your level design.

4. Other minor points. Don't insult the player's intelligence and waste their time. If they've worked out how to set up part of the level, don't bother making them do the exact same thing over and over again. Use a different challenge instead. For example, those levels where you have a laser and rows and rows of mirrors and it's so obvious that you just click every other mirror to set them up? Pointless.

Red herrings are possible, but I don't think it works well, because it makes the correct solution look like a shortcut. Similarly, giving too many useless items to the player will create the impression that their solution isn't the same as yours.

I hope this is good. I worked 45 minutes for it. It's hard with a little challenge.
