Balls

DoraBalls is not, as you might think, a game made by Bobby Singer, but rather Robamimi's latest escape game in which you must find four balls in order to get out. It sounds simple, but the reality is anything but. Just click around to interact when the cursor changes, and use the arrows at the edges of the screen to move around. The changing cursor, while helpful, is nothing new, but the game also includes an option to display colour names when you mouse over certain items whose colour is relevant to solving puzzles, making the game much more playable for people who have difficulty distinguishing colours in general. There's also a hint function, but don't expect it to do much more than gesture vaguely in the right direction. But hey, that's all you'll need, right?

What's impressive about Balls (stop that giggling) is how user-friendly it is. The big transparent overlay on some mouse-overs might be a bit of overkill, but it's still always nice to see a developer working to ensure their games are as playable as possible for everyone. As for the gameplay, it's about what you'd expect from Robamimi, which means it relies on a lot of clever, subtle clues to unlock its puzzles. Many puzzle solutions are hidden in plain sight, but that doesn't mean the game is easy by any stretch of the definition. Its clean, professional design means that no space is wasted and everything has a function... it's figuring out what that function is that may take some brain power. Sneaky and smart in equal measure, Robamimi's Balls (I can hear you laughing back there) is another fine escape game that expects you to step up your game in order to win. Let's play ball!

Walkthrough
I've tried to do things in the order of the in game hints, even though I did it differently myself. It may not be the most efficient way to escape. but it follows the developers plan.

1. Exploring
a. First screen
i.

The hotspots are the three lights at the top, the black-lined window on the left, the diamond sign “R270”, a device that looks like a stopwatch, the round sign “R150”, the green cap on the chair, the wooden box, the table.

d. Turn right to face the sink
i.

The hotspots are the three lights, the shelves on the left, the bathroom and the doors on the right.

ii.

The shelves on the left

ii.

The clue on the wall is a map that indicates the order of lights to use as the clue for the stop-watch like device on the first screen.

iii.

If the buttons on the device were numbered (1 & 2 on top, 3 & 4 on the bottom) the code would be 1 3 3 2 4 4 3 4 2

iv.

Take the top off the device and take the battery

b.

270 degrees : 150 degrees
i.

The note on the table combined with the two signs gives the ratio 270:150 which reduces to 9:5

ii.

Zoom on the clock, then turn it around Not the key in the compartment.

iii.

Put in the battery and turn it back.

iv.

Press the left button 9 times and the right one 5 times. You’ll hear something.

iv.

Something fell, look at the shoes and find the battery.

j.

The shade + numbers on the floor
i.

Close the blinds and go to the balcony

ii.

There’s a code on the back of the blind – Up Right Down Left

iii.

This makes the direction code URDLDRUL

iv.

Go to the clock and get the other battery.

v.

Get the stool and go to the balcony.

vi.

Put the stool under the vent and put the truck into the vent.

vii.

Put the batteries into the remote and use the code on it to drive the truck.

viii.

Get the stool back and go back to the duct inside.

Stuck!

I have the code paper for the safe but no idea what the letters mean. The hint only tells me to go to the faucet but I've worked out what that part refers to.

Above the sink are black and white tiles. Match what's written on the paper with the tiles, and use only the ones that match up with white tiles.

You should get 'R3L8'.

Go to the box on the balcony; click the right button until '3' is under the triangle. Then click the left button until '8' is under the triangle.

Maha Al- Baqiah for the battery

Stand on the chair and look at the grate in the ceiling. When you click on the corners of the grate it wiggles, you need to click these corners in a specific order.

On the floor of the balcony there's a cross with some numbers in each quarter. Look at the numbers as single digits, that way there's numbers 1 to 8 and those numbers tell you the order for clicking the corners of the ceiling grate

Check the note paper on the top of the desk, next to the clock.

the Diamond:Circle means is meant to be a time. So the Diamond is the hours, the circle the minutes

Once you have the battery in the back of the clock, you move the hour hand 270 degrees Right, and the minute hand 150 degrees right

Four balls, and the soccer ball hint. I think I'm supposed to put the balls in their boxes, but can't work out in what order.

I think the balls correspond to the clothes as follows:

  • Baseball: caps

  • Tennis ball: shoes

  • Basketball: Shorts

  • Soccer Ball: Shirts

But sorting them by how many items in the room doesn't work, or sorting by how many people play the game (unless I can't count or remember how many people play each game).

Okay, this isn't power of post, it's power of going to the Japanese walk-through page and using a combination of the little I know and the Rikaikun extension for Chrome...

So, we have the number of players in a team for a given game.

  • Basketball: 5

  • Baseball: 9

  • Soccer Ball: 11

  • Tennis: 1

You also have the number of items of clothing

  • Caps: 5

  • Shirts: 11

  • Shorts: 9

  • Shoes (pairs): 1

So you're going top to bottom, matching clothing to the sport that has the same number of players as that item of clothing.

  • Caps: 5 -> Basketball

  • Shirts: 11 -> Soccer Ball

  • Shorts: 9 -> Baseball

  • Shoes: 1 -> Tennis ball

I take it you have the remote, and the remote control truck?

The remote re-uses a clue, as well as its own clue.

Re-used clue:

The numbers on the floor of the "balcony", used for the wobbly grate

Own clue:

The arrows on the back of the balcony door blinds

Specifically:

Using the stool, place the remote-control truck in the hole high in the "balcony" wall. Use the remote on the truck. Press the arrows that correspond to the numbers 1-8 from the numbers on the floor.

You have to open up the balcony to get the chair (or stool). There are two places for the chair:
1.

Facing the exit (closet to your left, balcony & sink to the right), use it to reach the grate on the ceiling

2.

On the balcony, with the chest on your left and door to the balcony on your right, use it to reach a hole high on the wall.

(Could've sworn I posted something last night... apparently I was too vehement.)

The hats:

The hint says "position of hats is important", or something to that effect. Problem is, it doesn't specify position relative to WHAT. Turns out, it's relative to gravity: the ones on the coat rack are high up, the ones on the table & sofa are in the middle, and the one outside is on the floor, i.e. down low.

I think this puzzle would have worked better if the coat rack was much higher up, rather than being at about half the height of the door; and if the cap on the balcony was actually directly on the floor, rather than being in the middle of a long narrow basket.

After that, the ball placement puzzle blatantly requires not just outside knowledge, but outside sports knowledge, and is thus a serious turn-off. Luckily, it's easy enough to brute force.

I think this game is mostly alright except for the business with

knowing how many players are on a team and having to re use that clue from the balcony floor. I wish when I figured out the FC puzzle that it would tell me that I don't have a clue until the thermometer is the correct temperature. It doesn't let you brute force the yellow hat lever by saying that so it should do the same for the FC puzzle. Or at least when you open the door it could tell you it feels cooler inside or something.

I did end up using the hints for this game but the hint was always for something I had already figured out.

I think the fastest way out of the room is to tie all the shirts together and escape over the balcony wall. :-P

Okay, here's a walkthrough. Double-checked and replayed. Some of the puzzles are on the complicated side, so I hope I have explained everything sufficiently and haven't accidentally overlooked something.

Circular device above the sofa with the four buttons

Look at the nine ceiling lamps. Use the order on the diagram on the wall beside the door to give you the order for pushing the buttons above the sofa.

Upper left, lower left, lower left
Upper right, lower right, lower right
Lower left, lower right, upper right

Collect the battery.

The clock

Use the battery on the clock. Use the notepaper beside the clock and the two "R" numbers on the walls to give you the time for the clock.
The diamond is hours, the circle is minutes. Move the hour hand 270 degrees, and move the minute hand 150 degrees.

(9:30)

Flip the clock back around to collect the key. Take the battery back

The closet

Use the key on the closet door. Take the basket ball. Look through all the jerseys until you get to the first one. Now look back through the jerseys in reverse order one by one and note the pattern of U-necks and V-necks.

V V V U V V U U U V U

Use the U-V pattern on the UV buttons by the sink. And hit Enter.

Enter the balcony

Examine the little "window" beside the sofa. The lines in the window combine with the lines on the balcony wall to display the 3-digit code for the balcony lock.

308

Enter the code to open the balcony door, and before entering the balcony, make sure the blind is closed.

The Chair

Collect the soccer ball and chair. Use the chair on the floor in front of the door to reach the vent between the ceiling lights.

The Safe

Zoom in on the sink. Use the ten symbols on the note with the ten black and white rectangles above the faucet. Read only the white ones.

R3 L8

Use this combination on the safe on the balcony. Collect the truck.

The FC drawer

Make sure the balcony door is open. If you close it, the temperature will change. Zoom in on the thermometer beside the sink. Note that both Farenheit and Centigrade temperatures are measured. Zoom in closer to read the exact
temperatures. Combine F degrees with C degrees to get the four-digit FC code for the drawer in the clock table.

8630

Collect the controller.

The Brown Box on the Sofa

Note the positions of the five baseball caps around the room. The yellow one is on the floor, the red and green ones are at seating level, and the blue and black ones are highest hanging on their hooks. Zoom in on the box
on the sofa with the five baseball cap symbols, and adjust the dot below each color to coresspond to the position of its cap.

Yellow is bottom, blue and black are top, and red and green stay put in the middle.

Open the box and collect the baseball.

The Door High Spot

The vent above the door moves when you click its corners.
Collect the towel above the sink.
Turn on the faucet and wet the towel. Use the towel to clean the smudge off the floor of the balcony (you have to be on the balcony facing the balcony door in order to see the smudged area). Note the numbers 1 through 8 on the four corners of the square that appears. This gives the order 1-8 for clicking the corners of the vent.

Upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right
lower left, upper right, upper left, lower right

Zoom in on the carpet before the door. Collect the battery and insert it into the remote along with the other battery.

The Balcony High Spot

Place the chair on the balcony beside the yellow hat to reach the high spot. Place the truck in the hole in the wall. Use the remote on the truck. The directions for pushing the controller are written in the arrows on the back of the blinds on the balcony door. Re-use the square
on the floor with numbers 1-8 to tell you which order to push the arrows written on the window. (I know, it's way too complicated.)

Up right down left down right up left

Take your trusty chair back to the main room and reach that vent one more time. Collect the tennis ball that the truck delivered to you.

Four Sports

You have four sports balls now, so you can solve the last puzzle, which is placing the balls on the correct shelves. The soccer ball tells you to count the numbers of various sports apparel (hat, jersey, shorts, shoes) throughout the room, and notes their position on the player's body. There are 5 caps, eleven jerseys, nine shorts, and one pair of shoes. If you look at the shelving unit on the wall where the balls are supposed to go, you can see that the shelves (minus the one with the key) are positioned in a staggered height order that you can parallel with the height order of hat, shirt, shorts, and shoes. You will need to use some outside knowledge of how many players are on various sports teams to solve this puzzle.

The hat is at the top of the figure, and there are five hats and five players on a basketball team, so the basketball goes in the top shelf. The shirt is next on the figure, and there are nine shirts in the room and nine players on a soccer team, so the soccer ball goes second, and so forth.

Top to bottom: Basketball, soccer ball, baseball, tennis ball

Whew. Well, that was interesting.

a. First screen
i.

The hotspots are the three lights at the top, the black-lined window on the left, the diamond sign “R270”, a device that looks like a stopwatch, the round sign “R150”, the green cap on the chair, the wooden box, the table.

ii.

The table
1.

Hotspots are the clock, the note, the red cap on the table, and the drawer labelled “FC open”

b. Turn right to face the wardrobe
i.

The hotspot is the lock

c. Turn right to face the door
i.

The hotspots are the lights, the roof between the left two lights (a duct too high to reach), the door, the shoes, the blue and black caps on hooks, the diagram on the wall.

d. Turn right to face the sink
i.

The hotspots are the three lights, the shelves on the left, the bathroom and the doors on the right.

ii.

The shelves on the left
ii.1.

The hotspots are the shelves

iii.

The bathroom
iii.1.

The hotspots are the towel, the thermometer, the buttons on the right and the tap.

iii.2.

The thermometer
iii.2.a.

The hotspot is the middle section

iii.3.

The buttons
iii.3.a.

They are marked U, V and Enter

iii.4.

The tap
iii.4.a.

The hotspots are the tap and the code above.

iii.4.b.

Use the towel on the water from the tap

iv.

The doors on the right
iv.1.

The hotspots are the buttons on the left, the left door and the blind cord on the right.

2. The Clues
a.

9 lights, wall, 4 buttons
i.

Meaning that there are 9 lights in the room that combine with a clue on the wall to form a 4 button code.

You’ll hear something.

v.

Turn the clock around again and get the key.

c.

UV is not ultraviolet. END
i.

Use the key on the wardrobe. Open it.

ii.

Note the 9 pairs on shorts

iii.

Note the 11 shirts on the top bar. The closest one says END.

iv.

Look through the shirts and notice the necklines. There is a mix of round and v necks.

v.

Determine the order of necklines from the wall to the END shirt.

vi.

The code is v v v u v v u u u v u

vii.

Use the code on the buttons next to the sink. The light goes on on the balcony.

d.

You can see the balcony
i.

Look through the balcony door and see the black lines on the left.

ii.

Go back to the first screen and look through the window. The black lines match up to make the code 308. Use the code on the door buttons.

e.

Use a chair in the room
i.

Go to the balcony and get the stool. Note the box with the combination lock on top, the yellow cap in the basket on the ground and the vent above the arrow on the right wall. There is also a smudge on the ground near the door.

ii.

Go back inside. Put the chair under the duct in front of the wardrobe

iii.

Get the note from the duct

f.

Look at the faucet
i.

Use the code above the tap to work out the code from the note.

ii.

The code is R 3 L 8

iii.

Go to the box on the balcony. Turn the knob clockwise to 3, then anticlockwise to 8.

iv.

Get the truck and note the diagram.

g.

FC is not Football Club. Let’s air the room.
i.

When the door is open, the temperature in the room is different.

ii.

It’s 86 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius.

iii.

86F or 30C

iv.

Go to the table and use the code 8630. Get the remote control.

h.

Positions of Caps are important
i.

The caps are at different heights. Yellow is on the ground, green and red are at table height, blue and black are up on hooks.

ii.

Enter these heights on the wooden box. Get the baseball.

i.

Let’s Clean away. And the high place.
i.

Use the towel to clean the smudge on the balcony.

ii.

It reveals the code 17 62 35 84

iii.

The code is the order to press the corners of the duct. (press the corners in order 1 to 8)

iv.

Something fell, look at the shoes and find the battery.

j.

The shade + numbers on the floor
i.

Close the blinds and go to the balcony

ii.

There’s a code on the back of the blind – Up Right Down Left

iii.

This makes the direction code URDLDRUL

iv.

Go to the clock and get the other battery.

v.

Get the stool and go to the balcony.

vi.

Put the stool under the vent and put the truck into the vent.

vii.

Put the batteries into the remote and use the code on it to drive the truck.

viii.

Get the stool back and go back to the duct inside.

k.

Look at the ceiling in the room
i.

Get the tennis ball

l.

How many wears? People? Head = high, Foot = low
i.

Get all the balls. Note the clue on the soccer ball.

ii.

From Wikipedia, there are 9 players on a baseball team, 2 in tennis, 5 in basketball and 11 in soccer.

iii.

From the room there are 5 caps, 11 shirts, 9 shorts and 2 shoes.

iv.

This gives the order the balls go on the shelves: From top to bottom: basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis.

v.

The key is released, use it to escape.

I had to get help with about half of the puzzles, and the ones that I did figure out on my own made my head hurt. I didn't enjoy this game much at all, the puzzles were all too complicated and there wasn't enough... balance? between logic and intuition. Even the puzzles I figured on my own felt like I was leaping a little. The only simple puzzle was the shirt one. The logic of the puzzles just felt... awkward? I felt like my logic and intuition had to twist themselves into pretzels just to understand what I was supposed to do.

But that said, I see why this game got its own review. It's different. This developer is creative (the only motif I had seen in other escape games was the "wobbly" one). The graphics were great, and the puzzle concepts and presentation were original. The logic was sound, if strained. If the visual clues were more intuitive and the logic flowed a little better and the puzzles were more streamlined... presentation just takes practice. So overall, I applaud this game. E for Effort, C for creativity. There's an A for Amazing in this developer's future, in my book.

I just looked up some of Robamimi's other games, and I was surprised. I remember playing them, and enjoying them a lot. For some reason, this game was so different, I didn't recognize the designer. I feel like this was a step down from the usual caliber. So I take back that A in the future crap. Robamimi is an A developer. This was just a hiccup.

Oh well.

I got the code for the safe from looking at the top of the sink but I have no idea how to operate the safe?

R3 L8 meaning I go clockwise for three digits and the opposite direction for eight digits?

@backgroundcheck

It works like an old fashioned padlock

You go right (clockwise) to the number 3 on the lock, then you go left (counterclockwise) until you reach the number 8 on the lock.

I appear 2 be stuck.

1) supposedly when I put the chair in the balcony where the arrow is, it takes me to the duct. inside the duct is a not. the duct might not be accessible though because I clicked all around the duct and no note is there.

2) I must be missing something on the combination because I went "clockwise to 3 and counter clockwise to 8" and nothing happens.

oh well. anyone have a clue?

The vent

is not on the balcony. Go inside and turn to the door. Put the chair under the lamps. Now look up.

The dial:

If it doesn't work the way you tried it, try it in the opposite direction. Also, make sure you've actually seen all the clues related to the puzzle - it might not work if the game thinks you're brute forcing it.
