Mondrianism

Starchild It's pretty difficult to imagine a game which epitomises the notion of interactive art quite so literally as Jezzamon's Mondrianism, because it actually is interacting with a famous piece of art. And what better artist to pick for Ludum Dare's Minimalist theme than Piet Mondrian, one of the most important figures of the minimalist art movement.

MondrianismIn Mondrianism, you'll be able to take control of his paintings and mess with them until you remove all the colours from them. The colours are trapped in rectangles in the paintings, and you can only move one colour per level (you do so with your mouse). Different coloured rectangles move in different directions – vertically, horizontally or diagonally. You have to move your rectangle until it reaches a different coloured one and absorbs it, at which point your rectangle changes colour, making the game much less monotonous and much more challenging. The catch is that you can't absorb rectangles of your own colour, so you could find yourself stuck on a level with a bunch of blues, having eliminated all reds and yellows, and then the only thing to do is sigh and press [R] to restart.

This game is as simple as they come, but it's insanely addictive, exactly because it looks so clean and straightforward. Whether you like Mondrian or not, his style fits the game so perfectly that it seems incredible that no one thought of putting the two together a long time ago. And therein lies the genius of Mondrianism: it took celebrated, cult art and wasn't afraid to transform it into something new and innovative once again after all these years.

It's really incredible how good a puzzle this is.

Unfortunately, the randomly generated levels seem to be impossible more often than not, but the design is still really beautiful and there's some cool math behind the game.

I didn't find it to be sufficiently puzzly enough. I liked the idea, but at no point did I feel like I was stopping to think about what I was doing. There were a few traps - like getting turned red when in a set of vertical squares you can't escape - but they were easily avoided by a little trial and error. In most levels I just forged ahead, worrying more about ending up the wrong color to capture the last block than about the path to get there.

It's also an awful lot of clicking, especially when you're trying to get a red box to move horizontally. It would have been nice if I could trace the mouse around to move instead of having to click each box.

A cute game for a short diversion but not a contender for the puzzler trophy.

SirNiko, you needn't have worried! It's mathematically impossible to find yourself as the wrong color to capture the final block on any of the regular levels, or indeed on any solvable level. (This is one way to tell that a randomly generated level is impossible; if you ever find yourself in this situation, then in fact you would have found yourself stuck no matter what you had done.)

Also, if you hold down the mouse button you can drag your way around each level without clicking.

I think the review needs a little tweak. Considering there is no tutorial for the game, knowing that you can click and drag your rectangle would have been helpful info (thanks Buttons) rather than just 'you do so with your mouse'. Like Sir Niko, the constant clicking was putting me off. Curse you hindsight!

Also, 'you can only move one colour per level' should probably be 'you can only move one highlighted rectangle per level'. The review makes it sound like you can only move the red squares or just the blue ones.

As for the game, although it does feel a little same/same after a few levels, the simple idea is genius and makes both the art nerd and the gaming nerd in me very happy.

Odd, all I have in the menu is Regular Mode. I didn't know there were instructions as well, my mistake. Sorry.

Since I just dove right in, I assumed figuring out the logic of the game was part of the game. Reading the instructions would have pretty well ruined it for me. Glad I didn't find those!

Agree with buttons, many of the random levels are impossible, and only after a couple of moves.

And this is going to make me look REALLY stupid, but how the hell do you solve the second level?

You have the red and blue squares catty-cornered and have to start with the red square, though it wouldn't matter if you started with the blue, it would still be impossible. You'd either end up with the blue and red on the bottom of the board at opposite ends or facing each other at the top and bottom.

You needn't go back up the same way you went down.

In that particular level, having to move the blue rectangle would indeed have made it impossible, but not so with the red one.
