elleNoir EscapeYou arrived at his office in the late afternoon. It's not often a private eye gets to investigate a rival. But on the other side of the door, what everyone but you expected happens: you're hit over the head. When you awake, you're trapped inside. Now you must use your wits and detective skills to escape in Noir Escape, a light homage to film noir in an escape game created by Tomislav Podhraski.

As you sleuth out clues and tools, a changing cursor and messaging for every interactive area keeps you in the know. If the scene's a little too noir for your tastes, just click the light icon in the top right corner to brighten it up. Most of the action revolves around discovering useful objects and putting them to use, which is so in character, the fact that there's only one real code to break is easily forgiven. Although you'll probably get out faster than you can ask, "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" While Noir Escape ain't exactly hard boiled, the subtle parody and smooth navigation make this one a keeper.

How to be a hard-boiled P.I. in ten easy steps

  1. You wake up facing a desk. Click it to zoom in closer:

    • Open the desk drawer:

      • Take the KNIFE from the drawer.

  2. Back up and turn left to face the couch:

    • Examing the couch, you notice something interesting about it...

      • Use the KNIFE on the left cushion.

      • You'll get a MYSTERY BOX.

  3. Now open the mystery box:

    • Use the KNIFE on the MYSTERY BOX.

    • You'll get an INSCRIBED LAMP (light bulb).

  4. Turn left to face the door and coat rack:

    • Examine the coat...

      • Get a WALLET.

    • Click on the wallet inside your inventory to get...

      • Your client's BUSINESS CARD (Marie Overton).

    • Look in the waste basket to find...

      • a PIECE OF CLOTH.

  5. Look at the light above the door:

    • While you're facing the door, use the CLOTH you got from the waste basket to remove the regular LAMP (Light Bulb) from the overhead light.

    • Then, replace the INSCRIBED LAMP into the light socket.

      • Make a note of the markings on the wall above the door.

  6. Turn left to face a painting of a woman playing a stringed instrument. Click the painting to slide it over and access the safe:

    • Examining the safe, you notice it has a strange design. Yet, there is a way to make sense of it.

    • Highlight the correct pattern of buttons then click the center square to unlock the safe.

    • HINT:

      The clue is above the door.

      SOLUTION:

      Starting from the center square, follow the arrow pattern above the door:

      SOUTH-NORTHWEST-SOUTH-WEST

    • Now that you got the safe unlocked, step back and click on it to open the door. Inside the safe you'll find...

      • A KEY. Take it.

  7. Turn right to face the door again:

    • Use the KEY to unlock the bars.

    • Unfortunately, the door is still locked and the key doesn't fit.

    • Rather than break a window (too uncouth for a P.I.), continue sleuthing around the room for something to help you get out.

  8. Turn right and zoom in on the filing cabinets:

    • Trying to open the each drawer of the filing cabinet, riffling through without knowing what to look for, is also a futile effort.

    • Instead, look for something that will help you know where to look.

    • Hmm. The drawers are labeled alphabetically...

      • Select Marie Overton's BUSINESS CARD (found in your wallet which was in your coat by the door) from your inventory.

      • Click on the "M-O" drawer of the file cabinet.

        • Get a DOCUMENT.

    • Read the DOCUMENT to get two clues:

      1. "Be careful where you sit!" (Useful to you only if you haven't found the MYSTERY BOX yet).

      2. "There is more than knowledge in these. Especially the 4th one from the right."

    • Back up from the file cabinet.

  9. Follow the clue back to where you'll find "knowledge in these":

    • Turn left twice to see the bookcase

    • The fourth book from the right on the bottom shelf looks slightly out of place. Click on it.

      • Inside the book is a GUN. But, it's unloaded.

    • Move the liquor bottle on the top shelf to reveal...

      • a BOX OF BULLETS. Take them.

  10. Now you have everything you need to open the exit door and make your escape:

    • Use the BULLETS on the GUN (both found in the bookcase, see spoiler #9).

      • You'll have a LOADED GUN.

    • Use the LOADED GUN on the doorknob to blast your way through the lock.

    • Click the "Exit" to leave.

Well done, detective. You should see your client about this. But first...

Short, but sweet. Really enjoyed it!

Only snag was the safe code, which I totally over thought and actually had to use the walkthrough for!

5 mushrooms for atmosphere, and the only things I disliked about it are the things I dislike about most escape games (a lack of context/story chief among them). Still, quite a gem.

This was the easiest escape game I've played in a very long time. The only good thing I can say about it was that it had very good atmosphere.

A nicely executed game, but too easy for my liking - if I don't need to consult the walkthrough at least once, it's too easy! :)
