The Act

JohnBTaking a few cues from classic animated games like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, The Act from React Entertainment puts you in the clumsy shoes of Edgar, the humble window washer who has to save his job, rescue his brother, and pretend to be a doctor, all while doing his best to get the girl in the end. How does he do all of this? Not with style or finesse, but with blind luck. And a little help from your iPhone swiping skills!

The ActThe Act both looks and feels like a classic cartoon, complete with over the top physical gags, a clueless protagonist, and crazy situations that you'd never find in real life. At certain points in the story, the action switches from movie to a game scene. Here, your goal is to help Edgar make the best of his current situation, whether that be wooing the lovely Sylvia or cooling the temper of an angry boss. When the action begins, pay close attention to Edgar's movements and how each character reacts to his mood. Body language is key!

You accomplish all of these tasks by balancing Edgar's show of emotions between timidness and brashness. Swiping left on the screen makes Edgar back off from the situation, often inviting the other character he's interacting with to step forward. Swiping right encourages Edgar to be bold, a move you have to carefully meter lest you frighten the other party away. If you fail three times in a scene, you have to restart it. You don't lose any progress, but if you want Edgar's day to be as perfect as possible, failure is not an option!

The ActAnalysis: The Act is short, featuring only about half an hour of gameplay, not including any replays you might be inclined to do. This might make you turn your nose and look elsewhere for a longer experience, but don't mistake brevity for a lack of quality. In its short time on your screen, The Act will capture your attention and turn you into a detail hound, scrutinizing the characters you see while you root for Edgar the underdog. And even when the end credits roll, you'll sit back, appreciate the experience, and hope React Entertainment delivers more in the future!

The Act takes a huge risk by ditching any sort of heads-up display, leaving you alone with invisible controls that directly affect Edgar's interactions with the world. While this makes things a bit more like guesswork than precision gaming, it also allows you to focus on the characters themselves, reading their body language and trying your best to be a socially aware cluemaster. This "blind" gameplay does have a few drawbacks, especially in those scenes where you'll fumble and fumble without knowing exactly what to do, but in the end, The Act is a better experience because of its invisible input. Interacting with people is not an exact science, and The Act mimics the real life interplay of emotions quite well, even in its quirky cartoon setting.

The Act is a game you want to experience at least once. The animations are fluid and detailed, the story is quirky and interesting, and the gameplay elements, while minimal, are subtle and meaningful. It's not an in-your-face modern gaming experience where you get to smash buttons to destroy things, but it does manage to convey subtle emotions and encourage you to interact with virtual characters appropriately, adding a wonderful layer of immersion that's quite rare in games today.

The Act Strategy Guide and Tips

General Information

  • This guide was created from play on an iPad, so you may need to adapt some of the actions for iPhone play.

Main Menu

  • The Main Menu lets you start a new game or continue your current game, check out the instructions, and find out a little bit more about The Act.

  • You can visit the game's web site, view the credits, or view more information about using the game.

Scene Navigation

  • You will be playing the game as Edgar, a mild-mannered window washer, who has 3 goals:

    1. Saving his job.

    2. Keeping his brother, Wally, out of trouble.

    3. Winning the heart of Sylvia, the woman of his dreams.

  • To control Edgar's actions and his responses to other characters, all you need to do is slide your finger left or right when you see the "Play Now" movie clapper board.

  • Edgar will act differently depending upon the scene you're in.

  • If you want him to act more affirmatively or aggressive, slide your finger faster.

  • If he's gone too fast, back off and try his approach a little slower.

  • Not all the scenes are interactive: some just happen without your help or are for information to continue the storyline.

  • Note the stop button in the upper right corner in case you want to stop the scene and reassess your strategy. You can then continue or go to the Main Menu.

  • Part of the fun is experimenting, and, if you really blow it, you can always try again.

The Characters

  • Our hero, Edgar, is a 32-year old window washer. He's had a rough time so recruited his brother, Wally to help out. He's a dreamer at heart, always thinking about ways to improve his life, but these plans, in a comical way, don't always go as planned. And yet, he is still a kind and optimistic guy.

  • Sylvia is a junior nurse at the hospital where Edgar and Wally work. She specializes in pre-operative care, and tends to be sort of shy because she hasn't figured out how to balance her intelligence with her attractiveness. She is very good at her job and likes to help people, but gets a little nervous around authority figures.

  • Wally is Edgar's well-meaning, clumsy brother. Although he is also good-hearted, he's a bit lazy and tends to doze off on the job, which was a problem with his previous employers. He's a loveable guy and wants the best for his brother.

  • The Boss really isn't a bad guy at heart, but he's head of hospital facilities and has seen a whole bunch of employees come and go in the maintenance department, so he has zero patience for employees goofing off on the job.

  • Roxy gives us a whole new meaning of the word "Drama Queen". She not only has a short temper, but she has an even shorter attention span. She is a beautician and always running late for her appointments. Even though she has an extremely "strong" personality, underneath there is a more delicate and optimistic person waiting to be discovered.

  • Then we have the 3 doctors: Dr. Williams, Dr. Hartsock, and Dr. Jain are some of the hospital's senior medical staff. Dr. Williams is a renowned Orthopedic Surgeon, and he is responsible for all patient care in the hospital. The 3 eat lunch together every day and have worked together for several years.

  • There is one other character that hasn't been named in the credits because he is the hospital guard who is Edgar's nemesis. After their first meeting when he throws Edgar out of the hospital, he is on the lookout for Edgar every chance he gets and shows up to check out Edgar's "act".

Main Walkthrough

Scene 1: Dream Sequence at Edgar's Cafe

  • Edgar is washing windows at the hospital and sees Sylvia. It's love at first sight, so he imagines meeting Sylvia in a classic setting at Edgar's Café Americain.

  • In this scene you are controlling Edgar's boldness toward Sylvia.

  • You want to move slowly because if you go too fast, Sylvia will just get up and leave.

  • Move Edgar slowing toward Sylvia and watch her reactions to decide how much more bold you should get and when.

  • Your final goal is to end up with Sylvia in your arms, so experiment with the right approach.

  • Screenshot

Scene 2: On the Job

  • Edgar discovers that all dreams must come to an end when he finds himself fantasizing kissing Sylvia at the window and it turns out to be the Boss on the other side of the glass. Now he is in serious trouble because the Boss is after him to get his job done, so your goal is to get the Boss to go back inside the window.

  • Edgar constantly looks out for his brother, Wally, but Wally is not holding up his end of the bargain, so you not only need to appease the Boss but you also need to keep Wally working.

  • If you ignore the Boss, he'll get mad and swat you off the scaffold.

  • If you ignore Wally, he'll fall asleep on top of Edgar.

  • Slide right to deal with Wally and left to deal with the Boss.

  • This is more of a quick action scene to achieve your goals.

  • Screenshot

Scene 3: Wally's Nap

  • Wally needs a nap so climbs in the hospital window, but Sylvia locks the window before Edgar can get there.

  • Screenshot

  • In an effort to save Wally from a terrible fate, Edgar climbs down the fire escape, rushes into the hospital, and gets physically thrown out by the guard.

  • He lands in a pile of laundry but finds a coat that fits so is determined to go back to help Wally.

  • Screenshot

Scene 4: Edgar and the Doctors

  • Edgar is now disguised as a doctor, and faces a real challenge to fit in with the group of doctors he encounters at the elevator because he needs to evade the guard.

  • Your goal is acceptance so you can join them on the elevator. This is another small swipe scene, so you don't get too bold.

  • In your effort to fit in, try mimicking the doctor's expressions, and remember not to get too aggressive or laid back because the guard will come get you.

  • Sometimes friends expect to get a slap on the back, so that will mean you are accepted.

  • Slide left for more introspective and right for more boisterous laughing behavior.

  • Screenshot

Scene 5: Bruno's Operation

  • Meanwhile, Wally is happily napping when a couple of hospital orderlies come into the room for the real patient, Bruno Ruffian, who is scheduled for a brain transplant.

  • After Wally is carted off, Bruno returns from the bathroom and crawls into bed to await his fate.

  • Screenshot

Scene 6: Roxy

  • Now Edgar is in trouble because he needs to learn how to act like a real doctor, which is no easy task considering his first patient is Roxy.

  • Finesse is important in dealing with Roxy because she has a short temper and a shorter attention span.

  • You need to win her over, so slide right to try to convince her you are the best, and slide left when you need to psych yourself up to appear more like a doctor to win Roxy over.

  • Screenshot

Scene 7: The Waiting Room

  • The waiting room is filled with patients who will change Edgar's questionable medical skills.

  • He will miraculously and rapidly take care of all the patients without your help, so sit back and wait for your next move.

  • Screenshot

Scene 8: The Break Room

  • Edgar needs to escape from the madness of the waiting room, so heads off to the Break Room with Sylvia not far behind.

  • Once again, Edgar and Sylvia are alone together, but this is for real and not a dream sequence.

  • You do need to move slowly to get to know her better so you don't scare her off.

  • Your ultimate goal is to get the flower she picks up, and the come-on to the next room.

  • Screenshot

Scene 9: Save the Boss

  • Unfortunately, the come-on turns out to be for you to examine the next patient, Edgar's Boss, who promptly swallows his cigar when he lays eyes on Edgar.

  • Now you are faced with saving his life by getting him to cough up the cigar, which is going to be no easy task since he outweighs Edgar by quite a bit.

  • You don't want to rush too quickly and get him angry or he will panic more, but this is a matter of life and death, so start slowly to gain his trust and then react quickly to give him a Heimlich maneuver.

  • The hard part will be getting him off the floor if he falls.

  • When you finally get him to cough it up, he will end up exhausted on the floor, but you should be proud that you did save his life.

  • Screenshot

Scene 10: Rescue Wally

  • Edgar finds Wally in the operating room where the doctor is ready to cut open Wally's head on the dotted line with a saw so he can give Bruno a new brain.

  • Unable to convince everybody Wally is the wrong patient, Edgar kidnaps Wally and begins running with the operating table through the hospital, while again trying to evade the guard.

  • Screenshot

Scene 11: The Final Flower

  • Edgar has been found out so can no longer continue his doctor act with Sylvia.

  • Time again for finesse to win over the girl of your dreams because, when you do, you will get the Sylvia's approval with the final flower.

  • Test the waters and watch Sylvia's reaction in order to reach your goal.

So happy to see this is finally being released. When the original developers shut their doors in 2007, I thought this thing was going to be lost to the gaming world. Just shows you can't keep great animation down.

Oh my god it's so annoying, I'm stuck at the part where he has to stop his boss from choking and I just can't figure it out! Help please, where's the walkthrough??

Please don't panic, the walkthrough is in the works.

Don't get too aggressive in trying to help him or he will panic. First try to move so you can put your hands on his shoulders and then progress slowly from there. Ultimately, he will end up on the floor and spit it out.

I am suck at this game but I really like the game lol.
I am stuck with the doctors. What should I do when one of me slap my back?

It's ok for that to happen because one of the comments in the game is that sometimes friends slap friends on the back. That means you are being accepted by that doctor, so keep up the good work. BTW, I wouldn't suggest trying to do the same to him. ;)
