SonicLoverTETRISweeperSo you're bored at work. You think a quick game of Tetris might help wake you up, but at the same time a game of Minesweeper sounds appealing, too. It's tough to decide between two classics, so FonGeBooN has offered a unique solution: play both at the same time! That's what TETRISweeper is in a nutshell: a unique fusion of the tetromino-sorting gameplay of Tetris and the mine-avoiding tension of Minesweeper.

Although the instructions are all in Japanese, they're fairly intuitive. You can pick one of three difficulties in Original Mode, or engineer your own in Free Mode. Your left hand controls the falling tetrominoes via the keyboard: A and D to shift sideways, W and E to rotate, and S to drop. Oh, and hit P to pause. (The keys are customizable via the Configurations screen in case those don't float your boat.) As the pieces land, they become part of the minesweeper grid at the bottom, which is where your right hand takes charge on the mouse. Click cells to uncover them, and shift-click to flag them as mines. Once a row is free of gaps and completely flagged/uncovered, it vanishes. As if the rain of blocks from above wasn't enough, whenever the blue timer bar fills, a new row of tiles will be added at the bottom. Uncover a mine or let the tiles scrape the top, and that's game.

TETRISweeper is an intense game to say the least, but surprisingly fun to fans of both its parent games. The remix of the familiar Russian beat in the background sets the stage, and you're constantly switching back and forth between the two halves of the board to keep from flubbing either one. The mashup even brings about some interesting strategies; for example, you may find yourself carefully watching the "Mines" number as the latest tetromino lands so you can tell how many mines are in it.

In short, if you're looking for a fun and unique twist on one or two old classics, look no further than the green button immediately below this paragraph.

so, at first I was like "oh good, a nice little game to play for a bit before bed"

it's now 1 am, I've been playing for an hour and a half, and I'm surprised my neighbors haven't called the police from how much I've been yelling at my computer.

This game is evil.

@Walkthrough101 - that's a scathingly bad review. Holding loading time against an international game is questionable, and I have to ask if you are shift-clicking properly to flag mines.

-----

As a fan of both parent games, I have to say that this is a refreshing perspective from which to view the two games. Classic Tetris has been implemented, which is sure to please purists.

But I also have to say that, from the minesweeper side, a few quirks remain that can be frustrating.

- The notion of clicking a bomb on your first click on a new grid is not addressed.
- The handy shortcut of clicking (formerly right+left-clicking) a numbered tile with enough mines around it to reveal the remaining covered tiles is unimplemented.
- There is a possibility of clicking immediately after the field raises (when the timer runs out) and revealing a bomb even though you had intended to click a safe spot.
- The fact that correctly revealed and flagged lines disappear and incorrectly executed lines do not allows for some brute force checking in certain circumstances.

All in all, there are a few incongruous spots that could have been addressed to smooth out the player experience.

Even so, the title (as it is) is well executed. Aside from a few bugs (I had a moment where a piece would not rotate), it is an enjoyable experience.

Postscript: I would like to see it at a larger size, or as a standalone executable, so that the right click can be implemented.

I was going to play recettear, but then this came up and it's now been 2 hours... I like the difficulty levels, Semi-hard has a nice pace, and Hard is intense

the game is awesome but there is a terrible bug (it must be a bug), when you make a line disapear on the minesweaper side the mine counters are not updated and will provide the wrong count, I wish I could notify the developer

wow!! Evil, evil game! I love both mine sweeper and tetris.

A few issues I have: I keep trying to flag a bomb with right mouse button. The bombs are generated before the first click so we can explode on start.

Sorry I meant the game should be better like:
right click to flag mines
A way to "hard drop" pieces.

This game brakes the first rule of minesweeper: the first click must never be a bomb.

I agree with all the comments about clicking a bomb on your first square. Its really annoying, especially when it happens 3 times in a row :|

Addicting, clever, mostly well executed.

This game is terrifying - a combination of the first two games I was ever really really into?!? I thought they did a great job combining them. My only issue is that the mine counter didn't update quick enough.

You can even wait for a mine free block to drop at the beginning and eliminate the risk of clicking a bomb first- which actually makes this an improvement on minesweeper. And this is only in beta? (I think?!)

@crashlanding I agree with the evil, it has definitely swallowed up at least an hour of my evening. And don't listen to Soniclover: 11:30 is a perfectly reasonable time to go to bed. There's no moral imperative to wake up at 6 am if you don't have to, seems a little presumptuous if you ask me... ;)
