Weekday Escape

GrinnypIf there is any one group of room escape designers that excel at the art more than any other, it would have to be the Japanese. Don't think so? Then check out the top five finishers for Best of 2011 Escape Games. Another thing the Japanese do really well is ghosts. Whether in stories, manga, anime, or live action films, the Japanese seriously know how to create a chilling atmosphere (check out "Ringu" vs. the westernized remake "The Ring" if you don't believe me). Back in December we debuted a new designer, MyGames888 and their interesting effort, 3 Doors, and this week they're back with the spooky Escape from the Haunted Room. It isn't difficult to see that this talented group is fulfilling the promise seen the first time around.

Escape from the Haunted RoomAs the title suggests, the room you're to escape from is haunted, although it is haunted with a Japanese ghost, which means not jump scares, screams, and buckets of blood, but rather quiet glimpses as you explore each area of the tiny apartment searching for a way out. The spirit seems almost benign, merely discretely making an appearance here and there, but don't be fooled. This deceased girl appears lonely and, well, let's just say there are two endings to this macabre little game. Much of the fun involves figuring out both endings.

Navigate using the arrows at the sides and bottom of the screen, click on an object once to use it, double-click to examine it. MyGames888 has once again taken great pleasure in playing with the basic assumptions of a room escape, using found objects in interesting and unique ways. Things aren't always what they seem. The downsides to the game are the lack of a changing cursor, leading to some pixel hunting, and the lack of a save function. Fortunately, there's a "replay" function if you find the bad ending. Some sort of musical accompaniment would have also helped to enhance the already charged atmosphere.

All things considered, Escape from the Haunted Room is an atmospheric little escape game with amusing puzzles. It's not very long, but it contains enough chills to be worth the effort. Enjoy trying to escape the room with the good ending.

Wow, loading about 1% every 3 seconds... anyone else experiencing the same?

Actually, it's a certain number of kb every three seconds, so as the game loads, the percentage points come slower and slower...

Yes, it is rather slow to load.

Although I had a very slow loading time on Chrome, it was much quicker to load on IE (don't judge me!)

Try clearing your browser cache or using an alternate browser.

That was a strange little escape. Kind of creepy.

Incidentally, the review mentions a good ending. Is there a better ending than just escaping without getting a Game Over?

Out! And some good news: If you get the bad end and then hit "continue", you're taken right back to where you were just before you... ended badly. Which means you don't have to play the whole game over again to get the good end!

meh, not worth the slow loading. BTW, there are two different endings.

I'm visually handicapped so a dark game is pretty much impossible -- at any point in the game does one find a way to turn the lights on?

out... pretty good... but true, slow load

Can anyone tell me how I

opened the wooden box with the five buttons on the back? I only managed to open it by dumb luck. I can't figure any logical reason for the code to open it. The 'buttons' sometimes seemed end up permanently pushed in (or on) but I couldn't consistently reproduce this effect either and wondered if it was just a visual bug. When all the buttons were pushed in (or on?) the box still didn't open - so that didn't seem to be it. Then it just opened with random pushing. Everything else in the game seems vaguely logical but not this...? What did I miss?

spike21:

Have you tried increasing the brightness of your monitor?

BillyTehKid:

Go into the bathroom with the lights off and look around. There's a shape to the left over the bathtub that tells you what order to push the buttons in.

BillyTehKid:

You may not have noticed that you can look to your left in the bathroom. Once you do you can probably figure out the rest.

whoa, creepy!

in case you're spending forever looking for

the triangle shape for the puzzle machine

make sure you

have checked your reflection in the bathroom

i dunno about you, but looking in the mirror makes me feel all secure and safe-like

ahh, impregnable security. maybe you should check your inventory on the remote chance that something might click

geometric figures look best in the dark

Ah, yes.

Didn't notice I could turn right. No arrow like elsewhere in the game!

I'm a bit stuck.

I have a coin, and a remote with some buttons pushed out. I used the triangle and the glass on the machine next to the monitor, and I turned the monitor off. And I have no clue what to do.

@ThemePark

The toilet is kinda dark isn't it? Turn on the lights before you enter and inspect the mirror

SKIUS, thanks I had noticed that but thought I needed another tool than the one I had in my inventory.

So how does one get the good ending?

I thought I could put the coin in where the key had been, but that doesn't work. And I can't find anywhere else to use the key than the front door. But I noticed I can turn the machine off and take the shapes back.

@ThemePark

You best find a way of keeping that door shut!

Well the only bit that really made me jump was

The hand appearing from under the bed

@Themepark

For the good ending

Think about the door wedge

I can't open the wooden box even though I see the combination on the bathroom. Any idea why?

NVM Opened the box

i hope a walkthrough is in the works soon.

I like to see new promising designers in the JIG neighborhood, and MyGames888 shows the aptitude to reach higher; still needing to refine navigation and eliminate pixel hunting. Not bad for the third game released, but I find the second game 3 Doors to be superior. I look forward to seeing more from MyGames888.

Now, I have to find a copy of "Ringu" to complete my chilling experience.

Thanks grinnyp!

Good game. I was nervous throughout the whole thing, but nothing really frightened me too bad. Really creepy though.

I didn't realize that I was

A high-class, attractive business woman :O

Okay, how do I

open the box?

I've seen the pattern on the bathroom wall, but I can't figure out where I'm supposed to click to actually open it...

@StitchingSin

Try it in the dark.

Am I the only one who, at the very end of the game (good end), felt compelled to

click on her boobs to see if anything would happen?

How in the Sam Hill do I....

Take the key? Every time I remove the glass the key goes away.

I clicked too...

nothing happened, but I don't regret doing it...

Loading...

Can anyone post a walkthrough cause i am COMPLETELY stuck

I can't open the safe. I've

pushed in the buttons according to the buttons on the remote

, but no luck. Is that not the right solution?

@illtouch

Make sure you DONT press the dark buttons on the safe!

Don't worry. I FINALLY got it. (Smacks forehead with hand, shouts Doh! Homer shows up looking for licensing fee).

what do i do with cube thingy?
It wont fit on machine and i am stuck

Aaaand out! With the good ending. Couple of clues required critical thinking, but not bad. Could have used a changing cursor and and bit more logic in spots, but still not bad. Thanks for the hint, Halo, but I figured out the safe before you posted.

Halo, find someplace else it fits, maybe. You might get something in return.

Okay, I can't play this because the left side is cut off and I can't see all of the inventory

[Be sure your browser isn't Zoomed. That's known to cause scaling issues in Flash games. -Jay]

Made it! Got to the bad ending a couple of times with no help. The good ending seems so obvious now though!

I figured I could shut the door and I knew that was where she was coming from, but I completely forgot about the wedge!

Thanks it was fun!

Pretty good game... left a little to be desired, but for a third game it was really good. Could have used a couple of hints in places, but other than that I liked it.

I'm completely stumped. Where do I find a square object? I have a remote and a coin. Turned off the T.V. Not sure what to do next.

@Sully

you've got to make it so the electronic device doesn't work.

Personally, i thought this was one of the weaker escape games i've played here. This one disappointed me.

Just to be clear, it isn't zoomed. I don't know how to do that on a webpage

Gah! The cube thing is just not working for me. I've

entered the dark bathroom, noted the glowing clue and clicked the dots on the cube in various combinations

but still nothing...
What am I missing?

Never mind, I don't know how I got it but it seems

random clicking on the wooden box worked

Stupid cube!

ive tried following the pattern forward and reverse! Tried random clicking. Noticed if clicked then pulled the click stays.

Help....

A 16 MB download for such a short, simple game is way too much, it almost took more time to load this little behemoth than to beat it. The designers should really try to compress their media files a bit more.

stay in the dark to make the dotted face of the wooden cube glowing and start from the plain dot.
