Weekend Download

JohnBOne of the games featured on this Weekend Download is a product of the GameJolt Indie Game Demake Contest, a recently-completed competition that tasked game creators to strip their favorite indie game of anything more complex than a few elements and scale it down to a retro size. The results were excellent, and you can find dozens more to play on the contest page, including some browser games!

evereternalwinterworld2.gifEverEternal WinterWorld 2 (mirror) (Windows, 20MB, free) - Inspired by games such as Cave Story and The Underside, EverEternal WinterWorld 2 is a platform adventure with crisp pixel artwork and a lovely set of ability upgrades stashed throughout the game. You're about to build a Winter Machine when suddenly your plan is foiled by former pal Companion Pot. Yes, a piece of ceramics is your nemesis. Expect about a three to five hour adventure with this game, with an average level of challenge and an above-average level of humor.

nationofreincars.gifNation of Reincars (Windows, 4MB, free) - A game about death, reincarnation, and probably a lot more death afterwards. You start off as an apparently lowly human walking along a stark yellow landscape. A pit of spikes is in your way. You can't jump across. What do you do? Kill yourself and reincarnate as something that CAN. Come back as a turtle, rabbit, worm, monkey, or bird, each with its own unique abilities that will help you make it through the stage. You can only incarnate as each animal once, so a lot of trial and error will be in order. A very thoughtful and challenging game.

sulkeis.gifSulkeis (Windows, 9.8Mb, free) - A demake of Seiklus by Legendary Creations (author of A Picture is Worth a Thousand Orbs) that took second place in the GameJolt Indie Game Demake Contest. If you've played the already minimalist Seiklus, you'll probably wonder what a demake of the game could accomplish. Well, surprisingly a lot! The goals and basic set-up are the same in both games, but you'll find the puzzles and layout different this time around. Simply wander around the landscape, climbing vines and hopping around to gather anything worth gathering.

Note: All games have been confirmed to run under Windows Vista and are virus-free. Mac users should try Boot Camp, Parallels, or CrossOver Games to play Windows titles, Linux users can use Wine. If you know of a great game we should feature, use the Submit link above to send it in!

I am running on a Windows 7 OS, and whenever I try to run Evereternal Winterworld 2, a small black box flashes in the middle of the screen, and then disappears. Nothing else happens.

I can't play Nation of Reincars. That's terrible because I really really really really want to play it!!!!! It brings up a window and asks if I want to save it or open it. When I save it, it just brings up an empty Firefox tab and the exact same window. If I say to open it, I have to put what to open it in, and there's nothing there to open it in. :,(

To run EEWW2 on Windows 7 (or presumably Vista, but I haven't tested it) you have to right click on the executable file, go into Properties, Compatibility, check the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select something like Windows XP SP 3. It works fine then, or at least it did for me.

This review really should have links to 'Cave Story', 'Seiklus' and 'The Underside'. I don't think 'The Underside' has gotten a JIG review yet though. Considering the potential it shows, that is pretty sad. Likewise, the 'Merry Gear' games by the same creator really deserve reviews as well.

EEWW2 is tons-o-fun so far, but I can't help but feel that I've somehow missed the Briefcase that belongs to the hat-shop owner - I've had to pass by hat after hat after hat, and it just seems unlikely that I should have to backtrack to collect them all.
Can anyone point it out to me?

Actually, while we're at it; I've spotted 5 blue top-hatted worms so far (numbered 2-6) but I can't find worm #1... does he exist?
Also, I can't do anything to any of the other worms (even with the laser).

Worms 2-6:

Worms 2 and 3 you've definitely seen but might have forgotten. Starting at the Caves teleporter (Blue robot's house) you work back to the red and blue doorways, then go right, and through the regular doorway - the one that was blocked by the red and blue locks. You should be able to see both worms as soon as you enter the next area.

Worms 4-6 are all in the Town.
Worm 4: Just right of Alphonso's house (the guy who gave you the pizza). Look down.
Worm 5: To the right of the bakery. You should be able to see this without looking down.
Worm 6: Get into the tunnel from the bakery roof. The 6th worm should be in plain sight.
However, if you actually want to shoot it with your laser (assuming that that is what you need to do...) then you'll need to aim up from next to the doorway to the second half of the town.

All right... I might be done with EEWW2.
I'm not sure if I've just "beaten the game" or not.
I feel like I stumbled into an optional area (and boss) at the cost of completing the regular game and storyline.

I entered the "chamber of heroes", defeated a couple of bosses, and then the winter bomb explodes. I don't seem to be able to find any way out.
The reason why this is strange is because I never saw either of the two pots again - the last time I saw one was the second fight against the hovering one with the green projectiles.

If I really am stuck here, I call that too bad. I never did find that damned briefcase. Only have the one save file - if I can't get out, then I'll have to start over at the very beginning.

May as well give my two cents on the game as a whole.

I think that there's too much challenge in platforming and not enough in combat _compared to_ how little there is in combat.
This is in part due to the (IMO) overused instadeath spikes (since you see those things absolutely EVERYWHERE from start to finish). Cave Story had instadeath spikes, yeah. But it also had a lot of non-insteadeath spikes which served the purpose of making you care about your jumps while not sending you back to the last savepoint if you messed one up.
The other side of the argument is that combat is just too easy. I feel like everyone - myself and the enemies - have got oversized reservoirs of health in comparison to our weapons. Too often I stand on a platform and just shoot and shoot at some enemy in my way until it finally dies (with fully-upgraded weapons). Bosses too - throw enough damage on them fast enough and your health will probably outlast theirs as long as you put some token effort into dodging.

Last thing is that the art style sometimes fails to communicate to me what I can and cannot stand on - we're talking about basic platforms and walls, and differentiating them clearly from dressed-up background elements. They just look too much the same - a few times I'd have to sit there and examine my surroundings so that I could figure out what exactly I was supposed to jump on.
I think at least twice I completely thought that pillars were just background elements. I'm pretty sure that one time I tried to land on a piece of scenery and got severely instadeathed for my trouble.

Well, I just finished Nation of Reincars and it was really quite brilliant. You can also see some of the questions people sent here: http://www.esop.se/files/QuestionsToGod.txt

Some of them are provoking, some are funny, some are gibberish... I tried to ask "What question does 42 answer?" but I pushed 2 and... well...

For those of you stuck, here's some help!

First off, the most important thing to know is their powers...

Worm:

The worm can burrow into the ground by pushing down, spinning a bit to find out which way is forward and then crawling through the dirt.

Rabbit:

The rabbit should be obvious: it can jump extraordinarily high.

Monkey:

The monkey can jump a little higher than the man, and if you jump in one direction firmly and push up, it can climb walls.

Bird:

Pushing "Z" for jump will allow you to fly. Incidentally, any kind of spikes on the top are suicide. Just so you know,

there really doesn't seem to be a way to fly through them and if you try to walk by, you'll basically "hop" into them anyway...

Turtle:

You can tread water, and jump... about as well as the guy at the beginning on the level. It's good enough to get up and down a cliff, but useless to go around a pit.

Still stuck? The solution I used was...

Worm, turtle, rabbit, monkey, bird

Be sure to post what question you asked! =)

Sorry for posting AGAIN, but I'm having some technical difficulties with EEWG2: The window itself "floats" around my screen as my character moves! Is this intentional?

Also, with sulkeis, I can't get past the loading screen. The readme only says up, down, right, left, and space but the start screen just says "new" and "load" but doesn't respond... it also resizes my desktop absurdly small on exit if I press Esc.

Just finished EEWWII and I thought it was pretty cool. My weapons were fully upgraded earlier than i thought they'd be and I also had some difficulty in telling what was floor and what was background but only in the beginning. In the later levels it was fine.

It wasn't always clear where to go but I managed it fairly easy.

On the numbered wormy monocle things:

After completing the game you're told there's #7 of them. I also can't find #1 or #7

On hats:

The briefcase is in Haxville, a hidden town over an impenetrable pillar just after the long thin wall of ice. Rather disappointed that none of the hats I have so far make any changes other than cosmetic, though it's possible I'm not wearing the right one in the right place. Anybody found any changes?

On health bonuses:

I think the most health you can get is 42. Anybody found any more?

On the only girl in the game:

did I really just find a necklace is some obscure place and give it to the girl only to get a kiss in return? I want more awesome stuff to play with!

Anybody else find any cool stuff?

Well, I finally beat Sulkeis. I realized that on the start screen, you press "s" to start and "n" or "l" to make a new game or load... I figured that out by basically rolling my fingers along the keyboard. *sigh* The tiny pixel font wasn't very clear...

The code for the final passage in the yellow area to open the door (damn, it took me forever to realize those levers did something! I initially tried just avoiding touching any of them, thinking it was a precision trap, before I realized the green pixels above weren't just decoration... )

Here's the combination, left-to-right: 4, 3, 3, 2, 1 where 1 is the left-most switch and 5 is the right-most. Once you input it, do NOT touch another switch or you'll have to do it all over again...

Final impressions:

Huh. End screen is basically the start screen, and the little man ends up with the little woman (I think she has hair?)

I wonder if there's any way to collect the grey berries?

Oh, heh, the "chamber of heroes".

Well, it appears that there was this door that only opens after you've killed 729 enemies. It's marked with some writing on a block that says 27^2 followed by the little "kill total" symbol. 27 squared is 729, see? I'd managed to have over 800 kills when I first got there (due to my backtracking most likely) so it was open immediately and I'm not sure what it looks like when you first arrive.

One more thing about the game... I wish that there were more teleporters. Or a map.

you have to shoot so that the bullets go inside his head. if you go to the left of the map, go towards the switch and turn it on so you can use the boxes to jump up. you then are above him so you can shoot inside his head.

For the mushrooms:

Enter the rightmost door on the first level of the town (right next to the door with Coach inside). Shoot your way down through the ^_^ blocks (Save!)and go right until you reach the line of purple up-arrow blocks below the line of ^_^ blocks (and above spikes). Walk to the right, and shoot the ^_^ block about 3 from the right. Ride the purple block up, and I'm sure the way is clear from there. :)

Reaching Haxville/Getting the Briefcase

Step 1: Take the plains teleporter and head back one screen
Step 2: Jump onto the diamond-shaped platform, then the square platform with the fully upgraded Ice Blaster
Step 3: It requires two nearly perfect jumps, but it's possible. Jumping onto the wall is relatively easy once you've made it up here.
Step 4: Profit

In EverEternal WinterWorld 2, I'm wondering what the ending is like if you haven't

activated the Winter Bomb in the Chamber of Heroes.

Regarding the 'roided out Companion Pot:

If you activate the switch outside the bottom left of the "arena", you can stand on the second switched platform and laser CP with impunity, stepping down periodically to recharge the laser and the switch.

Also, does anyone know what...

ILSS!!!

@Reverend:

If I recall correctly, if you skip the winter bomb and go straight to the end (which is Labs 3), after you kill Companion Vexel (Kinda strange name), you'll arrive at a pretty small room. Bentley will be there, and ask if you'd like to play the PS3. Then, the credits roll.

Questions regarding the Chamber of Heroes:

Where exactly is the entrance to it? I'm not sure if I've found it or not because I'm not getting any subplot.
The door that needs 27^2 kills to get through takes me to an area with the developers, an area that just has two connected platforms and an area with lots of the green monsters.
The only boss fight I can find is in that area with the green monsters and is with some skinny blue fella in a hat who I can't do any damage to with any of my fully upgraded weapons from any angle.
Might this be because I've already completed the game?

And to top it off, I don't have a clue how to change weapons. I've found the ice-bouncer (?), and apparently I could change weapons at the 'menu page'. How do I get the menu page? I only found "A", "S", and the 'activation-DOWN-button' by trial and error....
