Link Dump Fridays

DoraYou don't know what you need. Link Dump Friday knows what you need. Here, have this glass of champahgnah and put on this bathrobe while you partake of the most succulent physics puzzles, the tenderest giant robot battles, the most supple zombie mazes. All for you, my pet. Let us gaze into each other's eyes and sit uncomfortably close to one another while the squeals of pigs tumbling down into the earth soothes your fretful brow... are you soothed yet?... no?

... ah, crud. I was never that good at this. I guess it's true what they say; it's not easy bein' sleazy.

  • Truffle HunterTruffle Hunter - I'd always heard that pigs were somehow involved with that delicious little garnish I get overcharged for at fancy restaurants, but I hadn't realised it apparently consisted of dropping jiggly piglets down hand-carved mineshafts for truffles and diamonds. Which, if we're honest, basically sounds like the best gig ever. The game is basically a one-trick piggy despite its 25 levels, but it's cute, squealy fun that won't bring Animal Protection knocking on your door. Unlike that Extreme Canary Fighting ring you have in your basement you think nobody knows about. Oops.
  • Mouse MegatronMouse Megatron - [Reassurance] This is a synopsis written by a human and not a robotic infiltrator encased in supple, fragile flesh for the purposes of eventual invasion. [Description] Use your mouse or equivalent device to control a fine example of enormous robotics with gestures as you strike down similarly large creatures. The controls are awkward but it should suffice to ensure that you are properly cowed by the steel might of your new robotic overlords when they strike. [Clarification] That was a joke, such as a human might make. Ha. Ha. Enjoy, meatbag.
  • Dummy Never FailsDummy Never Fails - This little physics game is awfully familiar, but it's fun and well made. Shoot hapless crash test dummies and hit the target to proceed. Ironically, the biggest flaw is dummy really does never fail; far too many levels can simply be bulldozed through without any finesse, which means you never really feel like you're accomplishing anything or showcasing your superstar skills. Sure, you won't unlock most of the skins, but you didn't need to put your dummy in a cheerleader outfit anyway, right?... right?
  • Release the MooksRelease the Mooks - Another game to test your physics skillz, the simple little title has you dropping "Mooks" from the ceiling so that they stack properly without falling over or throwing the balance of the whole structure off. It's cute, but a little repetitive. Just what are the Mooks? I have no clue. But just in case releasing them turns out to be a spectacularly bad idea on par with adopting a Tribble, I had nothing to do with this. It's all on you, skipper.
  • Haunted Mirror MazeHaunted Mirror Maze - Previously featured in an installment of Mobile Monday, this little puzzle game is now available for those of you without an iPhone. (You know, the ones who wanted to be able to afford to eat this year.) Use clues to track down creatures of the night on a grid with logic and mirrors as your guide. If you're afraid of monsters, don't worry; the critters featured within are strictly of the adorable variety. Why, that zombie is cute as a button! A rotting, shambling, slowly putrefying button that hungers for your succulent sheets of flesh! D'awwww.
  • Clockwords Act OneClockwords Act One - [Text by super special guest star Kyle.] The follow up to last year's Best of 2009 winner, has finally arrived. You'll enjoy the same great gameplay that made the first installment a hit along with a bit of a cosmetic facelift as well. Type a word, any word, and watch as your mysterious machine uses it as ammo to fend off wave upon wave of attacking clockwork spiders. The bigger the words you use, the more damage you do. In between levels you'll be able buy specialty letters to make even more powerful words to keep the secret stealing automatons at bay. A special premium edition is also available for the purchase of 2.99 USD that unlocks additional stages and new abilities.

Great batch of games this week! Especially love Haunted Mirror Maze; it's just the kind of puzzle I love.

I seem to be having a problem on level 18, though.

That can't be right, can it? If I understand the game correctly, this is impossible. There aren't any monsters visible from below but not from above!

Hmm. The problem seems to be with levels 16-20: all the 3x3 medium puzzles. If you try to select them from the menu, they'll be invisible at first. If you first select any 4x4 level, then try to select one of the bugged levels, it'll be visible, but bugged and incorrect.

If you select level 15 and play straight through, however, you can get to the proper puzzles.

I'm using Firefox 3.5.9 and OSX 10.5.8, though the problem doesn't seem like it would depend on the browser or OS.

Dummy: Hmmm... last 3 skins (row 5, numbers 5 and 6, and row 6 #4.) Ideas?

Row 5, number 6 is for

beating a level in the level creator.

I'm still missing 1 and 5 on row 5, as well as 4 and 7 on row 6.

Just want to mention that the titular robot of Mouse Megatron is very similiar of Gundam Exia of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. :D

The commenters on "Clockwords Part One" over on Kongregate have been unimpressed, and I tend to agree with them. It's not just the locked content that makes the game feel less interesting than the first one; I think that there's so much stuff loaded in there now that it's gone from a simple, elegant game to a mess. (For instance: the game encourages you to use the letters in your chambers, and it's more fun to do so; but in this version the bonus letters drift upward or downward and change when they hit the top/bottom, forcing you to use them faster instead of thinking of really good words to use them all.)

Haunted Mirror Maze is fantastic! I love to solve such puzzles on paper (where it's actually easier for me). Luckily I didn't run into the bugs @StephenM3 mentioned. The little messages by the characters are a very nice touch, those I don't get on paper! Sweet!

Dummy never fails was fun... haven't played that genre for a while. Managed to get top spot online too by a couple of hundred on my first attempt - must have got lucky :)

Haunted Mirror Maze is a nice logical brain teaser. I'd like to see a solve button added so that you have to submit a right answer rather than have it accept it automatically - makes it less easy to cheat by cycling through characters.

Dummy Never Fails was some fun! Good replay value to get the missing skins, especially getting total pain down below 780,000.

To get the Dummy skin on Row 6 #7, you have to

collect the "home base" symbol from the top right corner of Level 51. Takes some serious pixel by pixel experimentation with your targeting, though.

JIGuest, I just went through #35 and there's definitely a unique solution. Remember that you need to have four of each monster in the maze.

I finished Haunted Mirror Maze last night. I'm really sad to have run out of puzzles! This is the sort of thing I'd love to do over breakfast daily; a 6x6 puzzle each day would be heavenly.

I'd get the mobile version for sure if I already had an iPhone to play it on. Does anybody know of anywhere else I can find more puzzles like this?

I'm glad to hear that you like the puzzles Stephen. I'll get working on some additional pencil/paper puzzles* soon, and I'll talk with Rose about fixing any bugs and either adding more levels or creating a sequel if people like the Flash version enough!

Playing Mouse Megatron on my Mac via FF is not a possibility. The mouse just doesn't move at all on the game field.

FF is 3.6.3
Mac is 10.5.8

Works with Safari though.

Truffle Hunter is simple but fun, and the soundtrack helps the mood. There are a few things I'm finding irritating about the UI though. First, the lack of control with the zooming & scrolling. This wouldn't be so enraging if it didn't kill you all the time when a battery you didn't see comes on the screen suddenly, or one of your little piggies scrolls off the top of the screen and squeals a little death squeal cause you couldn't quite get to it fast enough. (Or even if you actually did, but it's just bouncing slowly and doesn't make it to whatever edge in time to stay on the screen.) That particular feature is just a bit too frustrating to actually be fun.

More minor quibbles are the lack of a "play this level again" button immediately following the end of a game and the fact that completed levels only display your score and not any other way of measuring your relative success on the level so you can be motivated to go back and play it later.

It's a fun game and a cute game but these minor things really stop it from being everything it could be.

So I went to check out Clockwords just to see what it was about.

I'm not even sure how much time has passed since I did that, but it's now 1:35 in the morning where I live. Holy crap, talk about a mind sucker. Totally made the English major/writer in me happy! Though I had to play the prologue first, since Act One wouldn't load for me. I'd just get a black screen trying to load Act One...

"Haunted Mirror Maze" is a winner on screen and on paper.

I wish some of our newspapers (in the UK) had this instead of endless flipping Sudoku.

In case you still need help with level 43 for Dummy Never Fails:

This requires 2 dummies. First, aim the first dummy so it falls in the first section and falls down the stairs. It will then appear in the next section in a trampoline style. Then, aim the next dummy to the thruster to knock the first ball into the target. The first dummy will collide with the target.

5 stars for "Haunted Mirror Maze" - simple to learn yet with endless depth, just like all great logic puzzles. The cute little monsters are nicely animated, and the music is very pleasant too. The only negative is there aren't more levels!
