Link Dump Fridays

DoraYou know, I think I'm old enough now to have a "day". As in, "Back in my day, we never had games about toast, or nailing jelly to a wall. And jigsaw puzzles actually made sense!" But then I remember that my "day" was actually pretty boring and consisted of really big hair, Lawn Darts, and music videos by Paula Abdul. So instead, let's enjoy this day, and this week's Link Dump Friday!

  • Pixa FixaPixa Fixa - Yoy may not think you're all that old, but Pixa Fixa is here to show you just how terrible your memory is. Recreate coloured pixel images using the highest of high-tech cannons on a grid! And then when your self confidence has been well and truly shattered, we can go hang out together on a porch somewhere in rocking chairs, talk about Pac Man, and yell at kids to stay off our lawn. It'll be keen!
  • SummertimeSummertime - Easy jigsaw puzzles are for suckers. The only time a puzzle is really good is when it has you staring at a computer screen with such intensity that those around you can hear the gears in your head shrieking away like a rusty buzzsaw. Drag and drop the appropriate images together, and then use your enormous brain to solve the energy crisis and trasmute lead into gold, because you're clearly some sort of mutant superbeing if you can finish this one. No, I'm not bitter!
  • Toast of WarToast of War - It's difficult to put into words just how awesome this joyously quirky little platform adventure about an intrepid slice of toast is. It helps if you realise that if Toast of War was a person, he would wear a leather jacket, jump over sharks, and get all the ladies. Or we could just say "Boss fight with a chainsaw", and that would tell you all you needed to know.
  • The Rather Difficult GameThe Rather Difficult Game - Old people have the best sayings, mainly because they never make any sense. This way, the next time one tells you something is "as difficult as herding kittens" or "nailing jelly to a wall", you can tell them you've already done it and bask in your sense of superiority. At least until they lecture you about respecting your elders and remind you that you haven't really herded kittens until you've done it uphill. In a snowstorm. In space. With fireants in your shoes. Yeah.
  • Fat SliceFat Slice - Finally, a game Sweeney Todd would enjoy! Use your mouse to slash every spare bit you can off a series of increasingly complex shapes. Which is easier said than done since some inconsiderate person filled them with bouncing balls you have to avoid. May or may not make you want to throw your keyboard out a window. (Hint: Probably will.)

Argh @ the daggum jigsaw puzzle!! >:|

the puzzle was easy, just took a little bit of time...

Hmmm, Summertime was rather difficult. But I managed to complete it ^^

muhahah. the puzzle wasn't SO bad, but definitely took a bit of time.
hint:

start with the boy on the jetski and the pineapple

jmporkbob July 3, 2009 4:32 AM

yeah, it wasn't bad. just took a little extra time than i was willing to give it before i finished my homework, lol.

Reply

The puzzle was quite fun actually!

And I enjoyed Toast of War, even though the boss fights were a bit lame.

Pixafixa is neat but replay value is nil. A bigger base of pictures would be much appreciated, with only 10 (and seeing all 10 in each game) I don't see a point in playing more and more unless I'm REALLY fixated on upping my high score by a fraction.

Nice execution though. And the pictures are cute.

Toast of War:

How do you

kill the octopus boss?

Toast of War needs volume control!!!

Reply

oops...my bad...there is a volume control in the settings...plooey

Jigsaw was fun until I realizes:

that the pieces had less and less correlation. No satisfying final pic when it's ~80% random rotated/connected images, BAH!

Reply

Puzzle's a real brain squeezer but doable. @Tobberian

I think that's because it's meant to be oriented in any direction. One good way to find pieces that don't seem to fit is rotating. But agreed, it would've been cooler as a complete tangram-scene.

Hint:

There are border pieces and it's a square picutre.

Hey JIGmods, why are there -- well, to put it undelicately, anorexic girls on these ads? It's the one right above comments.

Re Summertime:

This is not a logical jigsaw. Things may be upside down, at strange angles and perspectives suggested by the images are not there to help!

Once you've got a couple of pieces in place it does get easier but it's beyond me how you're meant to solve this without luck or cheating. Which, I'm sure, isn't in the spirit of jigsaw puzzles.....

I could've sworn Toast of War had been featured, or at least mentioned, before.

@mar480
Squint at the shapes. There's bits missing from pictures that suggest other shapes. It's just a tick easier than doing the 'sky' part of the jigsaw puzzle.

Toast of War Octopus boss:

Really boring method, I don't know if there's a quicker/easier way:

Equip the crossbow, drop down into the pit, then keep jumping up and shooting him (you can only hurt him when he's pink).

If you shoot him quickly enough, he doesn't have time to fire anything at you. Just keep out of the way of the weird laser thing.

After 20 or 30 hits he will die!

Reply

Jimbog

Is it that you can only hurt him when he's pink? I thought you had to do a certain amount of damage to him, and then he would transform into the thing with the eye that shoots the blue laser, and then you had to shoot him with the eye. When he got down to zero health I walked up to him and hit him with the chainsaw.

The moral may be that I don't know what I'm doing even when it works.

I found summer puzzle really annoying!

pieces that are the right way up:

girl and boy picnicing
bear thing in hammock
boy on water ski
man on hanglider

man in boat
boy on scooter
racing car

dog with frisbee
woman sunbathing
buffalo
sealion
boy waterskiing

Here's the solution to the summertime puzzle if you're having trouble:

Cheers!

I managed to complete Summertime. Trying to pay attention to the borders over the subject makes for some kind of brain-ache.

I loved Summertime! No up/down, right/left, etc. I ended up with the solved puzzle pretty 'katiwompus' on the page so I missed part of the final animation.

Of course, I'm the wierdo that works a regular jigsaw from the *back* side if I thought it was too easy *grin*.

Fat Slice: ALMOST as hard as Qix.

Anybody else know this one? I had a version for Game Boy.

Reply
shadowscribe July 3, 2009 1:03 PM

I played the arcade version of Qix, but it wasn't really one of my favorites. That's probably why I didn't spend much time with Fat Slice.

The Rather Difficult Game was cute and fun....for a while. I quit when it started reminding me of how I felt when I knew it was time to quit my job. ('AAAHHHH! *sits in a corner gibbering*)

I finished the puzzle!

How to beat the final level in fat slice ( japanese ) ?
It seems imposible...

The puzzle ( summertime ) is nice :-)

Reply

Summertime puzzle wasn't quick but definitely wicked cool. Of course, this is from a guy who went all the way to 42X31 of White Jigsaw. LOL.

Reply

Summertime was great, but then I grew up on Little Red Riding Hood's Hood, first completed when I was 12. *chuckle* I'd love to see more puzzles like that.

Pixa is a neat concept, but is there any way to turn off the shaking every time you fire the laser??

Reply

I'm on the dinosaur and Fat Slice CHEATS by not giving you the slice when your location and timing is executed absolutely perfectly. It either puts it at a different angle to hit a barrier wall or won't draw the line at all.

I hate it when games resort to dirty tactics for difficulty.

Reply

My favourite from this collection ws Fat slice. I liked that finally i can move other than horizontally and vertically in such a game. Also, even my swiftest mouse cuts were recognized and executed. Nice.

Reply

Not all of mine were. So... does it end at the Japanese wave bioLarzen?

Reply

Yup. That's the end. Just read it on the creator's site.

Ok, so half an hour on the T-Rex and I'm giving up. What is this, a Nitrome game?

Anestoh July 4, 2009 3:04 AM

Oh man, the mention of Qix made me nostalgia a bit and made me realize why I was getting a feeling of deja vu from that game.

For extra obscurity points, I'll point out that I own the game on an Atari Lynx.

wildflower July 4, 2009 3:12 AM

I was getting so frustrated with the summertime puzzle, until I finally realized I could rotate pieces. Duh!!!! It was really easy after that :) The other games were cute but short. Couldn't finish the dinosaur puzzle in the slicing game.

Fat Slice is a lot of fun so far. Playing with a tablet and stylus seems to make things much easier -- though I am constantly tempted to hunch over my desk, muttering "Sakujo! Sakujo!"

Reply
Dooreatoe July 4, 2009 12:12 PM

I would love to see a second Toast of War, with more battles, weapons and enemies. It was so fun! Even though it's short, pause and save options would have been nice.

Reply
Dooreatoe July 4, 2009 12:33 PM

Oh nevermind, there is a pause feature.

Reply

I played Toast of War, reached Octopus boss and suddenly my crossbow disappeared and I was left with just the chainsaw and punch which obviously didn't do anything to it. So I lost all my lives.

Stupid game.

Reply

I've played toast of war before and beat it! and i can't play fat slice cause i all ready tossed my keyboard out a window :(

Reply

lol majorly massive hint for fat slice:

Play with the slowest cpu you have access to - enemies are slower but you aren't

well, sort of...

Reply

There is one problem with Toast of War: When you die, you have to start all over again :( Is there any kind of save feature at all? Thata'd be nice.

Reply
harpdevil July 5, 2009 8:16 AM

Summertime puzzle was fun :) Any more like that?

There was two instances where pieces that were supposed to stick together didn't, and then i left them alone for a while and then they did lol.

Nice puzzle though, something to relax with while listening to music on a blustery weekend.

OrigamiMarie July 5, 2009 1:47 PM

Fat Slice is fun. As far as I can tell, Wave is the last level since there's no progress bar at the top to indicate how done you are. I do believe I sliced in half the last pixel, I now can't see the remaining bit :).

Softbagel14 July 5, 2009 5:44 PM

The summertime puzzle was superb! I really want another one to do now!

Fat Slice is enjoyable, but like others, I am stuck on the dinosaur level. I have a question though...
One of my small sized balls bounced up the dino's tail and when it hit the tip of the tail, it simply flew off the page! Is this a glitch or a spoiler? and has it happened to anyone else?

Reply
OrigamiMarie July 5, 2009 6:27 PM

@Softbagel14: I had this happen on a different level, and I think it's a glitch. But a nice one :). For the dinosaur --

There is a good nearly horizontal place to slice from just under his tail to just above his front knee. Hold down the mouse just to the left of this line, be patient, wait a while, and eventually (for a brief instant) all of the balls will be solidly above this line. Now you have a lot less dino and a lot more non-white edge. Take off the front arm, then be patient and take off the diagonal going from the arm down to the long edge. Then do the head in a few slices. Then do the small part of the tail, then make the diagonal cut to take off the white line under the tail. Now you can just trim a little at a time until you've hit the magic %. And then explain the subsequent dud level to me :)

Yet ANOTHER example of my incredibly bad luck: I get to the final boss on toast of war, 5 lives, through trial and error I figure out what to do. I have no lives left, only one more shot and I'm dead, only one more shot and hes dead, I fire a crossbow bolt, it hits him and I die.-.- WHAT DID I DO TO YOU, KARMA?!?!

Reply

Fat Slice was awesome, but I'm totally stuck on the T-Rex puzzle. I feel silly spoiler-cutting a non-working strategy...

I'm cutting the leading leg first, then the back of the tail, then trying to make a horizontal cut to take off the lower half of the body. From there, I'm whittling, but I can't quite get it small enough.

Has anybody beaten the T-Rex level? How did you do it?

Also, I've found a bug in the T-Rex level: sometimes, a ball bounces out of the puzzle and off the screen, leaving you with five balls instead of six. When this happens, a lot of your cuts will "whiff" instead of slicing. If you're down to five balls, you probably have to start over, because you're contending with an invisible ball too.

I've never played this other game to which you guys refer, but I'll have to look into it, because I really like this one!

I haven't beaten the t-rex level yet but i know that you can (after the leading leg and tail slice) take off the entire front if you time is right

Internet Gamer July 9, 2009 1:42 PM

Anyone notice that little

Octopus that you can shoot?

Reply
COMATOSE July 10, 2009 11:37 AM

On fat slice I got past the t-rex level and on the level after that it leaves a clue to a cheat

It tells you to remember the secret of the Japanese small wave. Tsunami means big wave and Konami mean small wave. So try this old Skool cheat on the keyboard for Luke Skywalker 1337 coolness: up up down down left right left right B A

Finally! I came across Fat Slice over a year ago, ragequit halfway through, and I just beat the darn thing after a bloody hour!
