Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox

A follow-up to the original Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor, this installment features a wonderfully imaginative visual presentation that fits snugly on top of a puzzle-centric hidden object/adventure body.

mortimerbecketttime.jpgA time portal in Mortimer's uncle's house has opened, allowing modern-day objects to pass through to locations across the globe and throughout history. As the wide-eyed hero, it's your job to travel back and gather the items to set things right. Making matters more difficult, items that passed through the portals have been split into pieces, so instead of hunting for whole objects, you have to find shards and piece them together. Uncle Jerome's Time Bomb was also lost to the portals, so you'll need to find and assemble those pieces so you can close the portals once and for all.

The game is divided into areas that are situated on a series of small rendered maps. Within each time period you can travel between these scenes, solving puzzles and collecting items as you go along. There are eight settings in all, ranging from the "ordinary" (a pub filled with vikings) to the strange (Big Ben in the Nile River?!). The overworld maps lets you see at a glance how many items are left to find and how many puzzles still need to be solved. Once you complete them all, you'll gain access to the portal and move on to a new area.

The puzzles are what make Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox so interesting to play. Certain hotspots in each scene make the cursor turn into a set of moving gears, alerting you that one of the items you piece together fits here. For example, in the first area you'll eventually put together a group of pigs which, naturally, fits with the lone pig standing in one of the scenes. Not every puzzle is this logical, but because each item only works with one puzzle, you won't have a rough time completing them all.

mortimerbecketttime2.jpgAnalysis: Cheery, whimsical, and a bit campy from time to time. Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox is a light-hearted adventure game that doesn't take itself too seriously. The hidden object aspect is watered-down enough so anyone will enjoy it, and the puzzles are just tough enough to make you think for a second. Couple that with no time clock and no penalty for mis-clicks and you have the makings of a "kick back and relax" casual adventure game.

On the less cheery side, Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox often defaults to blind luck when it comes to finding items. Locating full objects would be challenging enough on its own, but when you don't even know the shape of what you're seeking, it becomes a frustrating matter of pixel scrutinizing. Looking for a piece of the wood pile in your inventory? Scan for brownish things. Half the time those brownish things are mostly concealed by other scenery, which leads to even more frustration. Fortunately the in-game hint system is unlimited and refills in just a few seconds, so you'll probably be using it every time it becomes available.

Despite missing the mark on how to hide objects. Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox delivers a great casual puzzle adventure experience.

Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox Walkthrough

  • In General:
    The walkthrough shows the shortest way through the game, but that does not mean, that you have to follow it exactly. You can choose on your map, where you want to go. Just be aware, that some things can only be found or done, when you solve puzzles or found items in other locations

  • The position of the item parts are random, so they cant be shown in the screenshots

  • The hint is reloading pretty fast, so you wont have to wait long, when you really can't find one of the parts

  • All codes, numbers, word games, puzzles ... are random. Screenshots of them can only be used as an example

  • It is possible, that you will have items earlier or later than described in the walkthrough. But this is only for items you have to replace. Puzzle items will always show up at the same time

Viking Age, 901

Village/ Ship

  • Look for the parts for your list

  • You wont find all, so click at the ship, you see in the back. Its another scene for the same list

  • Click the shield at the right side, its a puzzle

  • You see several rings, you can turn. You have to restore the picture

  • The inner circle does not move, so you can take this as point to start

  • The picture is random

  • When it's done, the middle of the shield does open and you can take out the last piece of the stone

  • Go to the tavern

Tavern

  • Kick the cat in the left down corner with the shoe from your inventory - you will get a part of the wood

  • Give the tray to the landlord, in back right side, the one who is reaching out with his hand

  • Look for all parts for your list

  • Go to the Frost Giant

Frost Giant/Cave

  • Click the fire wood at the fire place in front of the Cave

  • Click the stones at the wood

  • Wait till the Frost Giant is melted

  • Now you can enter the cave to look there for parts for your list

  • The gem from the list belongs to the sword in the back, left side

  • When you found everything, go back to the village

Village/Ship

  • Give the piglet back to its mum, left down corner

  • Click the ladder at the rear house on the left side

  • Now click the flag at the roof

  • You have to solve a few little maths problems (also random). What ever your results will be, it will be copied in your book

  • Go back to the tavern

Tavern

  • Click at the telephone in the back left side and "dial" the numbers you got at result from the flag

  • When you did everything right, you will see a place, you haven't been yet. A bird lets fall down something

  • Click the feathers from your inventory at the viking's helm, where they are obviously missing

  • The place is completely done now.

  • Go to the temple

Temple

  • Find all parts for your list

  • The jar belongs in to the others in the right upper corner

  • Click the knot at the ripped rope in the left upper corner

  • Click the cat head on the last cat body at the right side

  • After a short moment, the eyes of all cats start to glow and in the middle of the scene appears a female warrior

  • She is missing some and will award you, when you bring it back to her

  • Give here the sword and the shield from your inventory

  • She will give you a part of the time machine

  • Everything is done here, go back to the village

Village/Ship

  • Click on the ship to go there

  • Click the patch at the whole on top of the sail

  • Click the part of the anchor chain at the anchor, left side

  • Go back to the village

  • Click the egg in the nest, right side of the scene, left side of the house

  • You are done here now. Go back to the Frost Giant

Frost Giant

  • Click the hammer at the anvil, right side

  • The stone crown belongs at the head of the stone figure, left side

  • Enter the Cave

  • Click the pearl at the statue's necklace in the right down corner

  • Everything is done here now, you receive a artifact

  • Click the time portal at the wall and leave this time

French Revolution, 1789

Even so you are brought automatically to the Bastille, go to your map and choose "Street"
Street

    Look for all parts of your list

  • Give back the Pharaoh's head right side

  • Go to the shop

Shop

    Click the shop owner to talk to him. He wants to have a piece of the king's jewellery

  • Click the tank gun at the tank, located in the shelf right side

  • The speaker belongs to the stereo in the shelf left side

  • Search for your parts of the list, one part of the mask you can't find

  • Go to the Chateau

Chateau

    Talk with Ludwig, he promises you an award, when you help him to leave the chateau unknown

  • The globe belongs in its holder at the right side

  • Look for your parts of the list, one coin and the crown will remain

  • Go to the Bastille

Bastille

    Click at guard. He wants to have money before he will let you through the gate

  • Click the poster at the lamp post right side

  • The writing is mirrored

  • Click on the CD, and you will be able to read it

  • It's a little story (random, there are at least 3 different versions)

  • The propeller belongs in front of the plane

  • The lady at the left side needs the umbrella

  • There will remain 5 pieces

  • Go back to the Street

Street

    Give the apple to the left boy

  • The doorknocker belongs at the door

  • You are done here now, go back to the chateau

Chateau

    Click the cabinet in the back and a mini-game will open. Goal is it to arrange the figures in the right order. Which one this is, depends on the story you found at the lamp post in front of the Bastille (its copied in your book)

  • To switch the pieces around, place your cursor at the bottom and you will see some arrows going round and round. The direction of the arrows show you which two pieces will be swapped

  • I know at least three different stories, but there might be more.

  • Here is the solution for "Tale of a Toy Soldier": From left to right the correct position of the figurines is: Horse, Lion, Soldier, Lady, General and Flowers.

  • Here are the solutions for "Tale of a White King":From left to right the correct position of the chess pieces is: White King, White Knight, White Queen, White Pawn, Black Knight and Black Castle

  • Here are the solutions for "Tale of a Poor little Girl":Little Girl, Lighthouse, Cat, Statue, Chef and Bird

  • Once the figurines are in the right position, a small cabinet will open and you see a lock hole, place the key from your inventory in it and a secret chamber will open

  • Go down the stairs and look for the two pieces of the crown

  • After you found them go back to the shop

Shop

    Give the crown to the shop owner

  • You will receive the last part of the mask for it

  • This location is complete now, choose the Chateau on the map

Chateau

Hand out Ludwig the mask. Its not exactly what he expected, but he will give you the last coin for it

  • Take it an leave to the Bastille

  • Bastille

      Give the coins to the guard, he now will leave and you can enter the gate

    • Place the blender jug on the kitchen blender that is on the lower right side

    • The wooden eye belongs to the totem at the left side

    • Place the sharp tool from your inventory on the loose stone, right above the time portal to find a part of your list items

    • When you have found everything, leave the Bastille and go back to the Chateau

    Chateau

    The wig goes at the portrait with the bolded man, right side

  • Go downstairs

  • Place the book in the top right side of the bookshelf left

  • The candle finds its place in the candle stick on top of the cabinet, right side

  • The Portrait of Claude belongs at the empty spot at the bottom of the family tree

  • You now have to replace all portraits to their right position

  • To do so, read who they are under the portraits

  • For example: Claude - Brother of Pascal - so Pascal has to be the second child of Andre and Adele / Julie - Daughter of Claude - Julie has to be in the direct row above Claude

  • The portraits do NOT lock, when they are in the right position

  • The correct positions are (always seen from left to right)

  • Top row: Jeanne, Marie, Yves, Sophie

  • middle row:Serge, Rene, Gerard, Julie

  • bottom row: Pascal and Claude

  • When all things are done, you will receive a part of the time machine

  • Now you can go back to the Bastille and leave this time period through the time portal

    Wild West

    Go to the map and start in the forest

      Click the trapper. He wants you to find his hat

    • Find all parts for your list, except the star, which will remain

    • Go the plains

    The Plains

    • Click the chief. He needs you to help him getting rid of the wall you can see in the background

    • Give the Indian, sitting in front of the teepee left side, a little in the back, the blanket. He will use it to make smoke signs. The code will be copied in your book

    • Place the newspaper at the newspaper stand, left side

    • Find all parts for your list

    • Click the wall to find the parts you cant find in the first scene

    • The lid belongs to the trash can, right side

    • After finding all parts, leave the plains and go to Westville

    Westville

    • Talk to the man at the left side. He can't let you move on, as you have no authority

    • Give the Chinese food to the chinese guy

    • Click the letter N between the letter BA K right upper side

    • Go to the Saloon, where you will see a board with some scrambled playing cards. Your goal is it, to unscramble the cards to get a clue. To do so, click on 2 cards anywhere on the board and they will switch places

    • The Solution is random, but you have to remind the order of the numbers you will see (for example, mine was 284 and another time was 572)

    • The code will open the cabinet and you can search there for list parts

    • Here and outside will be 5 parts left, so leave Westville and go to Eastville

    Eastville

    • The spurs belong to the horse at the left side

    • Look for the parts of your list

    • Enter the shop

    • Place the bottle opener at the barrel down in the middle

    • Now it has a hole and the water is running out. Wait till its done and take the part of the key, you will see now

    • The bagpipe sack belongs to the bagpipes in the right upper corner

    • Look for parts of your list

    • Enter the carriage

    • Place the buckle at the belt left upper corner

    • With the key you can open the briefcase

    • Find the rest of your item parts

    • You are completely done here. Go to the Forrest

    Forrest

    • Give the hat to the ranger, you will receive a badge (star) for it

    • The metal cap belongs to the radiator of the red car, left side in the back

    • Go back to Westville

    Westville

    • Give the man at the left the badge, now you are allowed to move on

    • Change the numbers of the safe in the order of your cards from the saloon.

    • When you can't remember anymore, the code was copied into your book, so have a look

    • The socks belong to the dirty wash in the lower right corner

    • Look for the rest of your list parts

    • Place the air condition outside at the pipes above the saloon

    • Westville is completed, now go back in the forest

    Forrest

    • Place the teacup at the teapot right side on the ground

    • You are done here now, move on to the plains

    The Plains

    • Place the drumsticks at the drum on the right side

    • Click the wall

    • The helmet belongs to the armor left upper corner

    • Place the faucet at the water pipe in the right lower corner

    • Place the dynamite at the free spot at the wall

    • Open your book and read the code of the smoke signals

    • "First", "Second", "Third", "Fourth" and "Fifth" are meaning the numbers below the dynamite, the second numbers on the row above

    • So if there is standing for example: The first is the fourth, than you have to look where to find the roman one (I) and swap now the dynamite, so that number 4 will be at this place

    • Click on two numbers and they will swap places

    • I know about three different solutions, but there might be more

    • All ways seen from left to right, the correct order of the dynamite is:

    • 1, 3, 4, 2, 5 OR

    • 3, 5, 2, 1, 4 OR

    • 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

    • The wall will explode and reveal your time portal

    • Go to the chief to receive your award (a part of the time machine) and leave the time period through the portal

    Caribbean Pirates, 1667

    Port Royal

      Look for the parts for your list

    • Click left side in the water to go on searching under water

    • When you found all parts for your list move on to the Blue Island

    Blue Island

    • Click the voodoo lady to talk with her and give her the bones

    • For this you will receive a voodoo spell, which will be copied into your book

    • Click the beach chair at the parasol on the left side

    • Search for all parts of your list. A part of the shovel will remain

    • Leave the Island and go on to Fort Monarch

    Fort Monarch

    • Click the guards in the back in front of the door. They will tell you, that they would like to leave for lunch break, but didn't hear signal yet

    • Place the canon balls at the cannon left side

    • Look for item parts

    • Click on top in the middle of the bell tower

    • Click the guard. He will tell you, that he lost his horn. Give it to him

    • Look for parts for your list

    • When you down now again, you will see, that the guards are gone. Click the door to enter

    • Talk with the captain. A part of the wall map is missing, he asks you to find it for him

    • Hand out the gun powder to the guard

    • Search for item parts of your list

    • One purple part will remain

    • Leave the Fort and move on to the ship Black Shark

    The Black Shark

    • Take to the captain. He wants to be relieved from a jinx

    • Give the pirate with the water bucket the eye patch

    • Place the arrow head at the top of the harpoon on the right side

    • Enter the cabin

    • When you enter the cabin, you will see some letters on the board. Look in the book and swap the letters around until they are in the order shown in the book. Open the book and look at the answer. The words will not look the same in the book as they do on the board. Just look at where each letter ends in order to piece the puzzle together

    • In the screenshots you will find two examples for this puzzle, but there might be more possibilities

    • Place the shower head at shower left to the cabin

    • Find all parts of your list. The last part of the map you won't find

    • Leave and move on to Port Royal

    The Black Shark

    • Give the cracker to the parrot

    • Left side of the ship is a free spot. Place the cannon there

    • Go under water

    • The black pearl belongs to the shell in the right lower

    • Click a few times with the hammer the chain in the left upper corner

    • Wait a moment and a ghost will appear. He lost his binoculars

    • Give it to him and he will relieve the captain from the jinx

    • You are done here now, go back to the Black Shark

    The Black Shark

    • Click the captain. As he is free now, he gives you the last part of the map

    • Fort Monarch is your next goal

    Fort Monarch

    • The winch belongs to the crane, left

    • Place the square stone in the empty spot in the bell tower

    • Enter the cabin and click the part of the map onto the empty space at the wall

    • The captain give you the last missing part and you can move on to Blue Island

    Blue Island

    • Place the coconut at the tree on top right

    • Click the temple in the back

    • That purple thing is a lever - click it right next to the box and a minigame will open

    • Your goal is it, to bring the ball from the left upper corner to the right lower corner

    • By clicking the tiles, you can move there directions, so that you can always bring the ball into the next open spot

    • The screenshot shows your three different ways to solve this

    • When the ball is down, the wall opens and you can grab the last part of the shovel

    • Go back to the lady

    • Right next to her on the ground you see a X

    • Dig there with the shovel and you will find a part of the time machine

    • Go pack to the temple and jump into the time portal

    Age of Robots, 2158

    Go to the map and start with the Spacestation

      Look for the parts of your list

    • Two will remain

    • Go downtown

    Downtown

    • Talk to the shop owner, standing in front of the shop. He wants to have tickets for a concert

    • Place the windscreen wiper at the car

    • Collect the pieces for your list

    • Enter the shop through the door right next to the shop owner

    • The neon lamp goes on the top

    • Look for parts of your list

    • Go to the Rocket Dome by clicking left in the main scene

    • When you collect all pieces except one part of the tickets and one part of the memory card, leave the area and move on to the Crystal Tower

    Crystal Tower

    • Talk to the scientist. He needs your help in the robot factory

    • Enter the lab, right next to the scientist

    • The switch belongs to the microphone

    • Search for the items of your list

    • When there are two pieces remaining, go to the robot fabric

    Robot Fabric

    • The round window belongs on top left in the middle of the three windows

    The belongs to the poster in the left upper corner

    Collect all pieces for your list items and move on to downtown then

    Downtown

    • The joystick belongs to the slot machine left side

    • Place the water bottle at the water dispenser in the right lower corner

    • Go to the Rocket Dome and click with the metal detector on the metal left bottom. Now you have the ticket complete, go back to the main scene

    • Give the ticket to the shop owner. He rewards you with a computer program that will be copied into your book

    • Click the grid on the hole on the street

    • Enter the shop and give the leash to the robot. For this you will receive the last part of the memory chip

    • Move on to the Crystal Tower

    Crystal Tower

    • Enter the lab and click the memory chip at the empty space right

    • Now open your book. In the program you will find a line, that starts with 90>Data. Its random and I only can give you three examples: 90>DATA 1,0,1,1,0,1,0,1 or 90>DATA 0,1,0,0,1,0,1,0 or 90>DATA 1,1,0,0,1,0,0,1

    • Enter this number in its order in the keys at the right side

    • Wait a moment and the word correct will flash over the screen (when you did it right only, of course)

    • You will find the last part of the red robot brain at the place, where you placed the memory chip

    • Go to the robot fabric

    Robot Fabric

    • Enter the fabric

    • You first have to solve the puzzle. Its kind of slide puzzle and the robot parts have to be placed at the corresponding robot heads

    • When you cant get it or don't like it, you can skip that puzzle with the skip button with out any negative consequences

    • When all robots are standing in the correct order, place the robot brains to the corresponding colored robots

    • You will see, that the scientist will give you the last part of a panel and he tells you, that you now have access to the space shuttle

    • The location is done now, so move on to Crystal Tower

    Crystal Tower

    • Take the last piece of the panel

    • Click the fan at the ceiling

    • Go to the spacestation

    Spacestation

    • The flag belongs on the post on top, right side

    • Place the arrow on the street sign in the right lower corner

    • Click the shuttle

    • The record belongs at the jukebox left

    • The panel belongs in the middle, the time portal will open

    • Look for parts of your list, which might still missing and bring them to where they might belong to. This part is very random in this level

    • When every one is happy, jump into the time portal

    Go to the map and start in Luxor

    • Talk to the man, he will reward you, when you bring him something to eat

    • Find all the pieces for your search list

    • Go now to Alexandria

    Alexandria

    • the gas nuzzle belongs to the gas pump left

    • Look for parts of your items

    • Click the lighthouse in the right upper corner

    • click the photo the the others at the lift side on the top

    • Search for parts of your items

    • Go back to the main scene and click the door right next to the man. You come into the library

    • Talk to the writer, he tells you, that he needs ink

    • Find all parts of your search list

    • Move on to Aswan

    Aswan

    • Talk to the architect, he needs help with the hieroglyphs. The ornament belongs on top of the hieroglyphs board

    • Place the oars at the boat, left side

    • Behind the boat right is an arrow. Click it to come on the sea

    • The pincers go in the blue toolbox

    • Place the fishnet left behind the boat in the water

    • Wait a moment, then you can take a fish out of the net

    • Find all pieces of the list, except one part of the matches

    • Go back to Luxor

    Luxor

    • Give the monk the fishes. He will go out of your way and you see your time portal

    • On the top of the portal you see hieroglyphs. Click them and they will be copied into your book

    • Now go to Cairo

    Luxor

    • The green flag belongs at the blimp on top of the scene

    • Place the melon at the fruit stand left side in the back

    • Look for pieces of your items

    • Go to the palace. You will the the arrow for it, when you move your mouse in the middle of the scene

    • Talk to Cleopatra, she also needs help and will give you more hieroglyphs, which will be copied into your book

    • The carpet belongs on the stairs

    • Look for parts of your items

    • Go back to the main scene and from there to the Pyramids (right side)

    • The golden plate belongs right on the top at the Anubis

    • Look for parts of your list

    • When there is only a part of the plans and the ink bottle left, move on to Aswan

    Aswan

    • By clicking two hieroglyphs, they will change places

    • Have a look at the book and restore the original order

    • When you are finished, you will receive the last part of the match

    • You are completely done here, so go back to Alexandria

    Alexandria

    • The plant belong in the pot

    • Go to the lighthouse

    • The gem from your inventory is the eye of the statue in the middle

    • Click the matches in the fireplace.

    • Now the signal fire is burning. Wait a moment and you see a ship passing by at the horizontal

    • A window pops up and a Chinese guy tells you, that he now has ink

    • Go back to Cairo

    Cairo

    • Give the Chinese the gold bar and you will get the ink for it

    • Back to Alexandria

    Alexandria

    • Go to the library

    • The pendulum goes at the grandfather clock

    • Place the painting fragment at the ceiling

    • Give the writer the ink, for that he will give you a drawing of the constellations

    • It will be copied in your book and you are done here, ready to go back to Cairo

    Cairo

    • Go to the Pyramids. On top you see a constellation of points. By clicking two of them, you connect them with a line

    Cairo

    • Have a look at your book and redo the constellations

    • At the bottom of the sarcophagus you will find a scroll after finishing that puzzle

    • Everything is ok here now, go to the Palace

    • Give Cleopatra the scroll with the plans and she will give you an artifact for this

    • Everything is done, so hop back to Luxor

    Luxor

    • Place the telephone hand set on the telephone that is on the top right side

    • Time to leave, jump into the time portal

    Dark Age

    Dark Age, 817

    • Talk to King Arthur - he needs back Excalibur and you have to help to free his cursed knights

    • Look for items for your list

    • Use the back button and look in the backyard for pieces for your list

    • Click at the window right on top to get up

    • Collect pieces for your items

    • You wont find one piece of a bottle and a part of a flower

    • Go to Glade

    Glade

    • Click on the empty space at the bottom of the large stone in the middle

    • A puzzle opens, its your goal to let all colored stones disappear

    • To do so, you have to arrange the rocks from largest to smallest starting from the top. If you look on the right side of the wall, you will see the way the stones are supposed to be placed

    • Click the arrows that are on all four sides of the board. They will help you to move the stones around and position them in place

    • The arrows will move the stones in that row or column in the direction that the arrows are pointing to

    • The top row of stones do not move, you have to place the largest stone of that color underneath each matching stone in that row

    • You can (and should do) that one by one, means: one row after the other, not two or more rows at the same time. That makes it quite easy

    • Once you're done with the puzzle, you freed Excalibur from the stone

    • Now look for pieces from your list

    • One part of a flower will remain

    • Go back to Camelot

    Camelot

    • Go to see King Arthur, he will tell you, that now, that he has his sword back, you can free his knights, but only Merlin can help you with that

    • You will receive a code, which will be copied in your book

    • Go to the Old Tower

    Old Tower

    • Look for pieces of your list items

    • Place the stone at the wall right

    • Click the door, you will see three doorknocker

    • Have a look at the book to see in which order of color and how often you have to click them

    • The door will open, enter the room

    • Talk to Merlin. He will tell you, that if you want to lift the spell on the knights that you must place the magic flowers in front of each of the knights. Once the flowers are fully grown, the spell will be lifted. It also states that you must find a way to make the flowers grow faster

    • Look for the pieces of your items

    • When you found all, you are completely done here and can move on to the forest

    Forest

    • Look for parts for your list

    • The wheel belongs to the train

    • Take the bottle which is saying:"Revealing Potion" and click it at the tree

    • Enter the tree and click with the magnifying glass at the books on the chair. It will tell you which flower needs which potion. I'm pretty sure, that this is not random, as I had always the same:

    • The yellow one needs "Fire potion" (Camelot, backyard)

    • The blue one needs "Sea potion" (Forrest)

    • With the crowbar click at the big stone, left to the tree on the right side of the scene

    • Click the black flower at the wooden sign at the bottom of the stone statue and click then the bottle, which says "Night potion" on it

    • The knight comes back to live

    • You are done here, move on to the forest

    • Click the blue flower at the wooden sign at the bottom of the stone statue

    • click the bottle with says:"Sea potion" on it also

  • When you found them all, move on to the temple of Demeter

    • Talk to Demeter. She created a sleeping flower, but still need a stone flower for it

    • Place the corn in the right upper corner

    • The saturn ring belongs to saturn, on the top, left side

    • You will find all, except one part of the sleeping flower

    • Leave Demeter and go to the Underworld

    • The head of the golf club belongs to the other golf clubs, right

    It was kinda easy... i finished half the game during the demo

    but i gotta say the artwork and music in some of the parts were beautiful...

    I'm a big fan of hidden object games. Mortimer Beckett was a bit of a swing for me when I first started playing the game. The game play seemed confusing and sometimes even annoying.

    With that said, after some time I got the hang of it and it was much more enjoyable!

    The graphics are great and it was a nice change of pace from the typical hidden object style.

    Definitely worth checking out!

    The phonenumber you will get, when you click the ladder in the village at the second house on the left side. Click the flag on the roof and solve the maths problems. The results of this will give you the telephone number

    Corona: If I remember correctly, the number is located in a different scene. You have to click on an object to get the number into your journal. There may even be a puzzle that you have to solve in your journal once the number is placed there.

    Did you already used the cd at the lamp post in front of the Bastille?

    You have to place the figures in the order, the story tells you

    From left to right the correct position of the chess pieces is: White King, White Knight, White Queen, White Pawn, Black Knight and Black Castle.

    Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox Walkthrough

    • In General:
      The walkthrough shows the shortest way through the game, but that does not mean, that you have to follow it exactly. You can choose on your map, where you want to go. Just be aware, that some things can only be found or done, when you solve puzzles or found items in other locations

    • The position of the item parts are random, so they cant be shown in the screenshots

    • The hint is reloading pretty fast, so you wont have to wait long, when you really can't find one of the parts

    • All codes, numbers, word games, puzzles ... are random. Screenshots of them can only be used as an example

    • It is possible, that you will have items earlier or later than described in the walkthrough. But this is only for items you have to replace. Puzzle items will always show up at the same time

    Viking Age, 901

    Village/ Ship

    • Look for the parts for your list

    • You wont find all, so click at the ship, you see in the back. Its another scene for the same list

    • Click the shield at the right side, its a puzzle

    • You see several rings, you can turn. You have to restore the picture

    • The inner circle does not move, so you can take this as point to start

    • The picture is random

    • When it's done, the middle of the shield does open and you can take out the last piece of the stone

    • Go to the tavern

    Tavern

    • Kick the cat in the left down corner with the shoe from your inventory - you will get a part of the wood

    • Give the tray to the landlord, in back right side, the one who is reaching out with his hand

    • Look for all parts for your list

    • Go to the Frost Giant

    • Click the fire wood at the fire place in front of the Cave

      Click the cabinet in the back and a mini-game will open. Goal is it to arrange the figures in the right order. Which one this is, depends on the story you found at the lamp post in front of the Bastille (its copied in your book)

    • To switch the pieces around, place your cursor at the bottom and you will see some arrows going round and round. The direction of the arrows show you which two pieces will be swapped

    • I know at least three different stories, but there might be more.

    • Here is the solution for "Tale of a Toy Soldier": From left to right the correct position of the figurines is: Horse, Lion, Soldier, Lady, General and Flowers.

    • Here are the solutions for "Tale of a White King":From left to right the correct position of the chess pieces is: White King, White Knight, White Queen, White Pawn, Black Knight and Black Castle

    • The wooden eye belongs to the totem at the left side

    • Place the sharp tool from your inventory on the loose stone, right above the time portal to find a part of your list items

    • When you have found everything, leave the Bastille and go back to the Chateau

    The wig goes at the portrait with the bolded man, right side

  • Go downstairs

  • Place the book in the top right side of the bookshelf left

  • The candle finds its place in the candle stick on top of the cabinet, right side

  • The Portrait of Claude belongs at the empty spot at the bottom of the family tree

  • You now have to replace all portraits to their right position

  • To do so, read who they are under the portraits

  • For example: Claude - Brother of Pascal - so Pascal has to be the second child of Andre and Adele / Julie - Daughter of Claude - Julie has to be in the direct row above Claude

    • Go to the Saloon, where you will see a board with some scrambled playing cards. Your goal is it, to unscramble the cards to get a clue. To do so, click on 2 cards anywhere on the board and they will switch places

    • The Solution is random, but you have to remind the order of the numbers you will see (for example, mine was 284 and another time was 572)

    • The code will open the cabinet and you can search there for list parts

    • Here and outside will be 5 parts left, so leave Westville and go to Eastville

    • The spurs belong to the horse at the left side

    • Look for the parts of your list

    • Enter the shop

    • Place the bottle opener at the barrel down in the middle

    • Now it has a hole and the water is running out. Wait till its done and take the part of the key, you will see now

    • So if there is standing for example: The first is the fourth, than you have to look where to find the roman one (I) and swap now the dynamite, so that number 4 will be at this place

    • Click on two numbers and they will swap places

    • I know about three different solutions, but there might be more

    • All ways seen from left to right, the correct order of the dynamite is:

    • 1, 3, 4, 2, 5 OR

    • 3, 5, 2, 1, 4 OR

    • 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

    • The wall will explode and reveal your time portal

    • When you down now again, you will see, that the guards are gone. Click the door to enter

    • In the screenshots you will find two examples for this puzzle, but there might be more possibilities

    • Place the shower head at shower left to the cabin

    • When the ball is down, the wall opens and you can grab the last part of the shovel

    • Right next to her on the ground you see a X

    • Dig there with the shovel and you will find a part of the time machine

    • Enter the shop and give the leash to the robot. For this you will receive the last part of the memory chip

    • Move on to the Crystal Tower

    • Enter the lab and click the memory chip at the empty space right

    • Now open your book. In the program you will find a line, that starts with 90>Data. Its random and I only can give you three examples: 90>DATA 1,0,1,1,0,1,0,1 or 90>DATA 0,1,0,0,1,0,1,0 or 90>DATA 1,1,0,0,1,0,0,1

    • Enter this number in its order in the keys at the right side

    • Wait a moment and the word correct will flash over the screen (when you did it right only, of course)

    • You will find the last part of the red robot brain at the place, where you placed the memory chip

    • Go to the robot fabric

    Robot Fabric

    • Enter the fabric

    • You first have to solve the puzzle. Its kind of slide puzzle and the robot parts have to be placed at the corresponding robot heads

    • When you cant get it or don't like it, you can skip that puzzle with the skip button with out any negative consequences

    • When all robots are standing in the correct order, place the robot brains to the corresponding colored robots

    • You will see, that the scientist will give you the last part of a panel and he tells you, that you now have access to the space shuttle

    • The location is done now, so move on to Crystal Tower

    • Take the last piece of the panel

    • Click the fan at the ceiling

    • Go to the spacestation

    • The flag belongs on the post on top, right side

    • Wait a moment, then you can take a fish out of the net

    • Give the monk the fishes. He will go out of your way and you see your time portal

    • On the top of the portal you see hieroglyphs. Click them and they will be copied into your book

    • Go to the palace. You will the the arrow for it, when you move your mouse in the middle of the scene

    • Talk to King Arthur - he needs back Excalibur and you have to help to free his cursed knights

    • Look for items for your list

    • Use the back button and look in the backyard for pieces for your list

    • Click at the window right on top to get up

    • Collect pieces for your items

    • You wont find one piece of a bottle and a part of a flower

    • Go to Glade

    Glade

    • Click on the empty space at the bottom of the large stone in the middle

    • A puzzle opens, its your goal to let all colored stones disappear

    • To do so, you have to arrange the rocks from largest to smallest starting from the top. If you look on the right side of the wall, you will see the way the stones are supposed to be placed

    • Click the arrows that are on all four sides of the board. They will help you to move the stones around and position them in place

    • The arrows will move the stones in that row or column in the direction that the arrows are pointing to

    • The top row of stones do not move, you have to place the largest stone of that color underneath each matching stone in that row

    • You can (and should do) that one by one, means: one row after the other, not two or more rows at the same time. That makes it quite easy

    • Once you're done with the puzzle, you freed Excalibur from the stone

    • Now look for pieces from your list

    • One part of a flower will remain

    • Go back to Camelot

    Camelot

    • Go to see King Arthur, he will tell you, that now, that he has his sword back, you can free his knights, but only Merlin can help you with that

    • You will receive a code, which will be copied in your book

    • Go to the Old Tower

    Old Tower

    • Look for pieces of your list items

    • Place the stone at the wall right

    • Click the door, you will see three doorknocker

    • Have a look at the book to see in which order of color and how often you have to click them

    • The door will open, enter the room

    • Talk to Merlin. He will tell you, that if you want to lift the spell on the knights that you must place the magic flowers in front of each of the knights. Once the flowers are fully grown, the spell will be lifted. It also states that you must find a way to make the flowers grow faster

    • Look for the pieces of your items

    • When you found all, you are completely done here and can move on to the forest

    Forest

    • Look for parts for your list

    • The wheel belongs to the train

    • Take the bottle which is saying:"Revealing Potion" and click it at the tree

    • Enter the tree and click with the magnifying glass at the books on the chair. It will tell you which flower needs which potion. I'm pretty sure, that this is not random, as I had always the same:

    • The yellow one needs "Fire potion" (Camelot, backyard)

    • The blue one needs "Sea potion" (Forrest)

    • The black one needs "Night potion" (Glade)

    • Place the hat on the head model left next to the chair

    • Use the oven mitt to push the cauldron to the side, you will find a part there, you are looking for

    • When you found all, go back to Camelot

    Camelot

    • Click at the window to come upstairs

    • Click the key on the little box left under the time portal

    • The box opens and you will find the last piece of the bottle

    • The quiver belongs right at the bow

    • Go in the backyard

    • Place the valve at the water pipes, right side. The water stops running and you will get the last part of the flower

    • The nest belongs at the tree left

    • Place the yellow flower at the wooden sign in front of the stone statue and click the bottle, that says fire potion on it also

    • You see the knight coming back to live. You have done everything here, go now to Glade

    Glade

    • With the crowbar click at the big stone, left to the tree on the right side of the scene

    • You will find the last part of the flower

    • Click the black flower at the wooden sign at the bottom of the stone statue and click then the bottle, which says "Night potion" on it

    • The knight comes back to live

    • You are done here, move on to the forest

    Forrest

    • Click the blue flower at the wooden sign at the bottom of the stone statue

    • click the bottle with says:"Sea potion" on it also

    • The knight awakes to life

    • You have done all you had to do and will be brought to the time portal

    • Jump in an leave the dark age

    Click at Zeus. He asks you to investigate, why he does not get enough lightning bolts anymore

  • Look for parts of items of your list

  • Click right to come to the cyclops

  • Click the right one. He will tell you, that the anvil disappears and ask you to look for it

  • Look for the parts for your list

  • When you found them all, move on to the temple of Demeter

  • Temple of Demeter

    • Talk to Demeter. She created a sleeping flower, but still need a stone flower for it

    • Place the corn in the right upper corner

    • The saturn ring belongs to saturn, on the top, left side

    • Look for parts for your list

    • You will find all, except one part of the sleeping flower

    • Leave Demeter and go to the Underworld

    Underworld

    • The head of the golf club belongs to the other golf clubs, right

    • Look for pieces of your lists and go straight forward after

    • Click at Hades. He needs his helmet

    • Look for parts of your search list

    • Go back to the main entrance and there left into the cave

    • You have to do a puzzle

    • By clicking the tiles with left, they turn clockwise, by clicking with right, they turn against the clock

    • You will be brought back to the entrance, click at the cave again und you will find Medusa

    • Click with the hammer at the red bottle on the top in the middle

    • Place the petals at the bottom part of the mirror

    • Look for parts for your searchlist

    • A part of the anvil will remain

    • Go back to Demeter

    Demeter

    • Place the flower in the big bowl in the middle. You will receive the last part of the sleeping flower

    • Go to the Underwater world

    Underwater world

    • Click the round stone at the statue in the lower left corner

    • Give the sleeping flower to the octopus

    • Now, that he is asleep, you can click behind him to reach the temple

    • Click at Poseidon. He lost the relief for Zeus. It should be somewhere in the atelier

    • Place the shell at the mermaid

    • The pincers go to the crab

    • Look for parts for your list

    • Go back to the octopus and enter the atelier, which is left next to the octopus

    • You are standing in front of a wall

    I dinna care for hidden objects that are obscured by extreme edges of game field, other objects, or 95% translucency. You either did your homework or you didn't. Mortimer falls into the FAIL category. Nice try though.

    Yes. Why are you recommending Mortimer Beckett then?

    "a wonderfully imaginative visual presentation that fits snugly on top of a puzzle-centric hidden object/adventure body."
    Translation: another shoddy hidden object game where the gimmick is you aren't just trying to find objects, but rather their cutout parts. If you thought finding a brown hat in a brown room with brown furniture was frustrating, imagine trying to find five small brown polygons (who put together resemble a hat) in a brown room with a brown furniture.

    "The puzzles are what make Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox so interesting to play."
    More often then not, the puzzles are hotspots the size of pick-up trucks where you have to put one of the four or five objects you have on the side. The only puzzling aspect is why would this be called "puzzles".

    "The hidden object aspect is watered-down enough so anyone will enjoy it."
    No it's not and no, they will not.

    Sorry for the riffing, but this is one bad game, and the visuals perhaps look nice in these small screenshots, but are rather bland when seen the full size. The cartoony protagonist is perhaps reminiscent of Lucasarts adventures, but he is hardly featured in the game.

    But the worst.. no, this needs caps.. the WORST part is the already mentioned "find the parts" gimmick. The whole point of the hidden object game was to, well, find objects that are hidden! But this one forces you to find cut-out parts which resemble, well, nothing really, and they are more often then not hidden BEHIND things or stuck outside the edges of the screen, effectively forcing you to search for PARTS of the PARTS!

    Don't download this game. Get one of the Mystery Case files, if you really need to play another hidden object game, those ones are at least decent.

    Im not that far away from you about what I think about this game.
    Its for sure not a real challenge, when you are used to Hidden Object Games

    But: The Mystery Case Files, specially the Return to Ravenhearst - Sequal is challenging and for beginners or people, which are not used to this genre pretty hard.

    I always have a bit problems to recommend people to NOT buy a game. Most of the games have an hour trial and this is normally enough to find out, if you are satisfied with the gameplay.

    Btw.: The resemble parts of object is something, a lot of fans of Hidden Object Games do appreciate. Seems not to be your kind of playing, this is ok. And to respect.

    But a reviewer has to take care about the majority of players. So John did a good job by pointing excactly of the strength of the games for all players which DO appreciate this. For the rest, the demo version will show, if they like it or not.

    Mystery Case Files series is NOT challenging, especially the first two in the series. They are your usual run-on-the-mill hidden object games, and of MUCH higher quality then the one reviewed here. If one didn't play this genre before, he would be much better off to start with first or second MCF then Mortimer Beckett.

    I agree that one can always download a demo and try for oneself, but lately there is such an overload of casual games (especially hidden object ones, probably because they are horribly easy to create once you acquire the engine) it becomes harder for the casual gamer to identify which game is any good and which one isn't. Someone who hasn't played a "good" HO game can perhaps think this is the peak of the genre.

    I know the reviewer pointed out strengths and weaknesses of the game, but I also think the review is misleading with its praises, probably because the point is not just to review, but to promote, too. Anyways, I'm trying to be objective and as such to point out that one is better off checking out some other games before delving into this one.

    I agree, that the first MCF are not challenging in the meaning of the puzzles, they might have (to be honest, I don't even know, if they had) - But Ravenhearst with the doors, Madame Fate and Return to Ravenhearst have a good challenge.

    To talk about challenges in this kind of games, you again have to choose the majority and not your own skills. So when you say, you don't see a challenge in this kind of puzzles, ok, then you are used to this kind of puzzles or having a brilliant brain or what ever.

    Im not saying, that you are wrong... But the way of your writing implies, that the majority of gamers are feeling, thinking the same as you. If it would be like this, BigFish Games and all the other big portals can close their door. They wouldnt have enough gamers to buy their games.

    I think, that you play a lot of the other kind of games John and the others are reviewing here. They are often for sure more challenging. But this is not the point: A casual game from BigFish will never be a real brain breaker.... That's not what Casual Games of this portals are for. There you will always find easy to learn games, which do have a challenge for the majority of gamers.
    The rest will use the possibilities, sides like this one and others give, by pointing on another, more challenging, maybe more intelligent games.

    By the way, to create a HO game takes around 6 - 12 month, depends on the product value, length etc. That there are so much of them is question of demand and supply. The gamers want it, they get it, the developers make money with it. Why spending time and money on games, that you will not make enough money with to survive in this business?

    Oh and beside the point, that a reviewer will promote a game and will see, that he sees it from the view of the majority, he also has an own opinion. He likes a game or not... and this is personally. Nothing to argue about ;)

    Look in your journal and there is a page with lines of programming code. About half way down there will be a line that has a series of 0s and 1s separated by commas I believe. That is the code that you need for the binary puzzle.

    To bbsugar. I found the last piece of the plans by replaying the game then completed the constellation. I kept my eyes glued to screen and the time watched the last piece appear. I don't know what happened the first time the last piece just didn't appear.

    Finally got it worked out and completed game. Just needed a break and returned with fresh eyes.

    To italycinzia:

    Go to the location of the priest (I'm pretty sure). After giving him the fish, he leaves to eat. On the wall behind him are the remainder of the symbols. Plug them in in the order shown in the spaces left from the ones from Cleopatra. Check your notebook.

    Hi, I'm already stuck on the Viking era, no matter where I try to put the shield, flints, wood, and the tray nothing works, and the game is not showing any new things for me to find or giving me any information when I click on hints.

    In the part "Underground", where you meet Hades, you will find the last part of the flower, Demeter needs for her potion. I cant tell you exactly, where the last part is, as all items are hidden randomly. You will find it here:Hades, Location 1 or here:Hades, Location 2
    After you found it, bring the flower back to Demeter and place it on the cauldron in the middle of the scene. For this you will receive a sleeping potion. Have a look here, to see where to place it:Demeter
    Go back to the octopus and click the potion onto it. It will fall asleep and you can pass

    Am stuck on finding the rest of the scroll on my Cairo location, everytime i put in hint it tells me to look elsewhere which i cannot do. I have no other locations left to look at. Was having a wonderful time getting this far

    You have to look in your book. There is the program written down - you will find a line starting with 90>Data. This is your code. It is random, but this screenshot might give you a clue, where to look for it.

    The order depends on the story you found at the lamp post in front of the Bastille (its copied in your book).

    • I know at least three different stories, but there might be more.

    • Here is the solution for "Tale of a Toy Soldier": From left to right the correct position of the figurines is: Horse, Lion, Soldier, Lady, General and Flowers.

    • Here is the solution for "Tale of a White King":From left to right the correct position of the chess pieces is: White King, White Knight, White Queen, White Pawn, Black Knight and Black Castle

    • Here is the solutions for "Tale of a Poor little Girl":Little Girl, Lighthouse, Cat, Statue, Chef and Bird

    -Which kind of pattern you have, is random
    - Open the book and trace reproduce the constellation pattern that you see in the book, on the ceiling
    - To make the pattern, connect the dots by clicking on any dot, then click on the dot in which you want the line to go to and they will connect
    - Keep connecting dots until the design looks like the one in the book

    If someone knows the answer to this it would be greatly appreciated. I cannot find the last ear to the cat head in the Viking Era. I have scoured the temple numerous times and nothing...I'm terribly frustrated and am ready to give up entirely on this game...can anyone let me know?

    Get the ladder and use it on the second house in the village then click the flag.There you will find a math test thing.Solve the operations and you will get the CORRECT number.

    You have to get the phone number to the phone in the temple to scare the crow.The ear is "guarded" by it.Call from the payphone in the tavern.For more info read the spoiler above

    I've passed this game at least five times so if you need some info just ask me.I'll check daily(i'm not english/american so dont expect perfect English!).

    I'm on the last level Age of Gods and the horse "wall" won't open. It opened and then shut real quick and won't open again. I uninstalled and reloaded the game and the same thing. Any suggestions?

    I am stuck at the Ancient Egypt level. I have everything found that I possibly can yet I do not know which constellation to do or how to order the pillars in Aswan.     I am stuck in the Age of the Gods. I have found every item, placed every item except for the mirror that goes in the frame on the wall of the underworld cave. Never got a mirror, and since I've finished all the other areas,they are closed so I can't retrace my steps. Any help would be great. I can't move forward without this dumb mirror. Thanks

    Please help! I am so stuck on the constellation puzzle. I have the pattern in my book but when I click on the dots they do not connect to each other! Is my game defective?     Twice I've gotten to the relief puzzle in the Underwater World in the Age of Gods and solved it, but it closes up as soon as I accept the piece that Poseidon offers. What gives? Am I doing something out of order? I can't get it to re-open once it closes.

    Erin, I haven't figured it out yet. I've tried twice more (I'm getting really fast at the getting through it LOL). I've tried making sure I take everything and place everything before doing the relief, I tried not taking the piece when offered, and it still does it. So frustrating.

    Stupid or not, I have been on the first segment of this game (Eastville - General Merchandise)for over a week. I need to find the wine opener in order to get the key from the water barrel. Can anyone please tell me which of the 4 locations I can find it. If I can narrow it down to which of the scenes, I may can find it. If there is a possibility the opener stays in the same place please include this also. Please help me, I am on the verge of just deleting the whole game. I can't spend any more time on this one thing, THANKS!!

    I'm stuck on Caribbean pirates. All i have in hidden objects is gun powder and don't know what to do with it. Also don't know what to do about the Empty slot and the block puzzle with the garbled words. Help

    Darlene, the gunpowder goes to the guard inside the fort. The empty slot gets the lever that you find at the fort (stone-like, with a face on it.) When you give the bones to the voodoo lady, she gives you a spell which gets saved to the book. Follow that to solve the mini-game.

    Patsy, you find the wine opener in Westville. I can't remember if it stays in the same place, but I think at least part of it is in the safe.

    I love this game, but I need help. I am in the year 1617 in Port Royal. The first 4 FOUNDS are complete. The last piece in under water, lower right hand corner, under the oyster. The problem, it won't let me click on it. The notebook opens every time I get near the piece. WHAT DO I DO?

    The funny thing about the pilot code is that, with a few minor adjustments, it's actually valid code and can be run in QBasic/QuickBasic.

    It will print out Paprikari on your screen.

    Stuck in the Wild West!

    In Westville, in the saloon, I've solved the card puzzle but the cabinet on the right didn't open! It's supposed to right? I have re-scrambled and solved the puzzle a few time just to see if it would trigger the cabinet but nothing!! I'm positive the puzzle is correct. It's not that hard anyway. This seems to be the only thing keeping me from going further. Can anyone help?

    I must be really dumb...I am stuck at the first level going between the camp, the temple, the tavern and every hint says I cannot find more items there but I've used all the things found...what do I do how do I get out of this circle of no hints?

    I tried signing in again and playing it over as a different player and the same thing happened.
