Bodilies is an original, humorous and sassy, graphic adventure that features an elaborate audio-visual production and an engaging story, too. It was originally conceived and developed for a class assignment at the Hogeschool van de Kunsten Utrecht by Jeroen Stout, Mick Moolhuisen, and Roy de Groot.
Submitted by 'Canadian' earlier today: "It combines beautiful graphics and animation, and haunting, melodic music with a story that actually works and feels right. Help Neil in his quest for freedom and self-actualization; it leads you through an interesting point-and-click adventure you won't soon forget! "May your voyages take you to places where imagination has no bounds." Play Bodilies.
You may save your progress by clicking "Save game" just beneath your inventory (lower left of the game window). Doing so will give you a number with which you can enter and reload the game later, or even at a different computer.
Note: Due to some inappropriate language and a rather mature-themed storyline (lots of text), the game is not recommended for young children.

Oh, my spoiler only works if you got to the point where you messed up and it says "'we talked about amber', which I bought once", or "...which I didn't like"

Argh. I made it into the mine. Now what?
I'm having trouble telling whether I can use an item (or have used one)--for instance,

but I can't tell whether I'm doing something wrong, the action is impossible, or what--there doesn't seem to be any feedback. Or is there a flash update I needed to install? Is anyone else having trouble with this?
Also:

AHHH!, i can't find the relic! it's driving me nuts!
There seems to be a theme here... it's very very subtle... call me crazy, but I think there might be just a smigden of anti-clericalism here! Thank God (oops, sorry, slipped) that they didn't try to bash us over the head with it.
It reminds me of the French Revolution! What a peaceful, freeing, tolerant time that was.
i see what you mean!
funny
lol @ joye (love your sarcasm) :D
does anyone have just the tiniest idea where the relic is????
Yeah, the game strikes me as a smidgen anti-clerical. Call me reaching though. Being an agnostic in an atheist family has made me notice this kinda stuff. Ya know? Oh, and anyone get in the mines? If so, how? I'm a wee bit stuck.
i agree, jay
i. am. STUMPED.
After an hour I finally found the relic!

YES! Finally finished it after about an hour. Great game!

I'm at the mine now myself...still can't figure out what I should be doing to get through it.
I'll try, lemme go back through and try to play it one more time. I dunno if I'll have enough time before I have to go though
How do you get to the

Complete Bodilies walkthrough! Enjoy.

Go to the cathedral. Enter the passage, listen to the guy talk, and get the religious literature.
Go to the excavation site. Get the bucket from the ashes.
Go to the Vermillion Border and show the guard the religious books to get out.
Once outside, go into the house and talk to the writer to get the writing materials. Make sure you grab the bags by the side of the house.
Once you're outside again, go to the forest and talk to the guards to get the impressive clothing.
Go back to the prison block and give the writing material to the stranger. He'll give you the rocket schematics.
Go to the Hall of Truth and use the impressive clothing on the clerk.
Go back outside. Go in the house and show the rocket schematics to the writer. You'll get a remarkable speech.
Go back to the hall of truth and show the speech to the clerk.
Once inside, the order of conversation is:- I bought some amber once.
- Any of you lot ever bought amber?
- Things are expensive these days.
- I can't afford getting around!
- Erm...a car, and all that.
- Oh, I do all the time really.
- Don't you like them? They're useful!
- Dunno - it's just so unhappy!
- Hire clowns to ride them.
- Yeah, it's silly.
- The tubes are now free, and you've got some booze.
Go to the station. Talk to the cleaner to get the sucking machine.
Go to the hearthill factory and talk to the protest leader.
Get back on the tubes and go to Sour Haven.
Go down the path to the bay. Talk to the child. Use the camera on the slums behind you.
Back on the tubes. Go to the mines.
Take a picture of Twilight City, then go into the managers office on the right and talk to the manager.
Go into the bar, and give the drunks the talkative drink. Go back to the manager's office and tell him the story. Enter the mines.
Go to the deeper mines and use the sucking machine on the gasclouds. Go back to the room with the guard.
Use the gas mask on the sharp rocks in the bottom left hand corner. Show the broken mask to the guard.
Go back to the tubes, back to the city, and into the cathedral. Use the sucking machine on the donation box.
Go back to Sour Haven and down to the bay. Give the money to the child. Use the bucket on the sour sea to get acid.
Take the tubes back to the city and go outside. Shed a small tear for the writer. Use the rope on the dangerous edge to reach the metal, and use the pickaxe on the metal to get a chunk.
Get back on the tubes and go to Hearthill Factory. Show the two pictures you took to the protest leader. He'll take you to the factory manager, who will give you the sketch of the launch platform.
Go back to the city, back outside, back to the forest. Show the sketch of the launch platform to the guards.
Go back to the factory, talk to the factory manager, and you're done! Congratulations!
Haha, the temple of time music sounds like it's being sung by giants. Appropriate for the game I guess. :P
i am soo stuck

Thanks Dana! BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG help!
when i use the sucking machine with the gas cloud it said that i need something to put it in what do i need
Wow! I love the Writer. :(
Art is great.
Music is incredible. I guess when you don't need (C) permission (it's an education project), just knowing about the music is enough.
Strange: lots of loving attention on word play, but several grammatical/vocab/spelling errors. I guess Dutch English speakers are neither native nor non-native English speakers. Or maybe just rushed :-)
The art and music are polished, but not the language.
james:

If you enter the mines without the bags you cant get out?
oh yeah, also it's a tribute to Flash that they have 7 titles in the credits, and only one of them is programming. That's how easy Flash makes it, to make beautiful work.
No, Russell Scott, you get out the same way as with the bags.
ok so all i have to do now is

lol no prob now i know what to do too
it was a great game and i almost completed the whole thing without using a walk through... except for the bags part and the one little part about the tiki guards
Oh dear lord.

Other than that, great game.
GREAT GAME!! I loved the atmosphere and the subtle humor of it. The gameplay was good, too. I got through most of it myself and only used the walkthrough maybe 3 or 4 times when I really got stuck.
I enjoyed the game a lot, the plot made it infinately more interesting and fun than if it were just a run-of-the-mill point and click game. Great find.
I hope the artists get around the fixing the spelling+grammar to make the experience a little more fluid.
You should probably emphasize the mature language in the review a little more, it was rather corse, not that I am a prude or anything :)
All in all, quite fun.
PLANET OF THE APES

and... ACTION!
I have reached very near the end point and I am stuck. I think I have done everything in the walkthrough except the final step. However,

If this is a bug, could someone please tell me the ending so I know what is supposed to happen next, since I can't seem to see it?
Thanks.
susan:

That's a really great game. The dialogue was a bit weird at times, but as it was a project for a school in The Netherlands, I can't complain!
Pretty much everything The Writer said was perfect, the design was neat, and the music was placed really well.
The only downside I really saw was

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this game.
Looks like this is down at the moment :(
I really love this game, although it is not actually a game is it? The music is fantastic and the writers have a great sense of humour, very dry.
The only problem I have is that it takes AGES!!!!! to load the scenes. I am waiting 5 to 10 minutes and am afraid to leave the scene and go to another just because I have to wait so long. Oh well, it is worth it.
my links seem to be broken... might be just my compy but thought you might want to check it out jay
I think the problem is that this game is currently spreading virally across the Web, and there are many, many people trying it out. The game is being served from an educational institution, however, so there is likely a threshold limit on the number of incoming connections requesting the subdomain on which the game exists.
What this means is that you will have to "wait your turn" for each file the game requires to be downloaded. Each scene loads a new file, so that could mean that game play is slowed as the interest in the game remains high.
wow! i just beat the game! it's pretty cool at the end.

It's a bit slow, but it's a time killer.
Btw, I believe the music is from Jeff Beal's "Carnivale".
Thanks for the linky
this is ... FANTASTIC ...
Wow it's good in everything!
* Good graphics
* Good sound
* Good storyline
* Good jokes
* No pixelhunting
* Original puzzles (not get A, get it to B, get C, ..)
* Original answers on wrong combinations
* Very original theme setting.
Just say .. Wow...
Just to add, just the ending was not too satisfying IMHO...
This games was great, reminded me of the old adventure games i used to play, like simon the sorceror and discworld same humor and same background graphics, these developers must have played the old school adventure games.
I keep trying to give the impressive clothing to the guard but nothing's happening. :(
Well I dug it. I had to find help for getting out of the mine but the rest was easy and entertaining enough.
I loved the music, but I read earlier that it's not done by the designers? Anyone have a list of what tracks/games were used?
xadrian - click credits at the bottom of the game window, you will see a complete list of tracks used or remixed in the game.
Game-wise, very enjoyable, polished and thought-out; wonderful music choices, and very nice, original graphics. The Hall of Truth puzzle was a fun variant on "choose the right word path" -- plus, my solution differed slightly from the walkthroughs I've seen, so kudos to the creators for multiple paths!
Story-wise is where I think this falters a bit. While the plot set-up and environments are great and very different for this type of online game, I wish that we had gotten to see an event in action that finally pushed Neil to become such an outspoken anti-clerical proponent in a place where no one wants to speak up rather than constantly being told by Neil that that's how he is, or how the church is. Something akin to the moment near the end of the game

Also, yeah, the odd grammatical clean-up would've been nice, but it wasn't incredibly distracting. Anyway, good times.
Cant seem to find the camera???
I have not quite finished this game yet (I think I'm getting close though) but the visuals were a real treat. The watercolour style backgrounds are stunning although perhaps not always the best match for the more cartoonish characters.
I loved the music which (at first) I had assumed to be original; but I checked the credits after Jonathan's early comment and found that they were all borrowed from other games. That said, a good and sensitively-chosen selection of music which matched the look of the game.
Sometimes, a point 'n' click game need have a certain degree of visual style and puzzle appeal to lift it above the basic Flash escape-the-room variety. Examples from IDAC (such as 'The Bar') have this extra level of polish. I feel that this game has a comparable level of complexity, originality, visual appeal and back-story to really stand out from the field.
Simply one of the VERY best online games I have ever seen. The music is excellent as well. Haven't solved it yet (no spoilers please, takes the fun away) but will come back to it a bit.. soon as I am done playing with (on 12 string acoustic) with the "Outside" theme. ;)
An easy *****!
Hey! I like this pretty much :D. I really like the storylines and the graphics. Yeah I'm a scaredy cat so I never turn on the speakers for games like this.
Still I like it very very much! At first I did'nt really understand it, But it got really FUN after that. Hehs (:
It was kind of sad that the writer's house got burned. )':
link not workingT_T /r/ing a new link, save the day!!! jayyyyyman!!!!!!!
o_O it's working for me. What seems to be the trouble?
i click the link and it opens a weird site>: look: http://fac-muziek.hku.nl/hku/show
That's the site for the school these students were attending when creating the game. Click on the "Bodilies" link, or the image, or the link labeled "Play Bodilies".
hmmmmO: where might i find this link jayman?
In the review above. xD
In any event, here's the correct link to the game, as appears in the review above multiple times. ;)
>: but that link forwards me to the school site>: you actually mean that when you press the link above the game opens?OO how can it only forward my computer?T_T thats impossible...>:
when i opened the game yesterday it... actually opened the game-_-" but i had to close it, and today.... i click the link and it shows me a white page with only the words "Klik hier als je niet automatisch doorgelinkt wordt..."
after a few seconds.... i find myself being forwarded to the schoolsite>:
oh man this sucks... i even went to the authors sites and the official game site and the liks is the same>:.... and im the only one>::::
anybody find a mirror or something for this game?
gah! I really want to finish this game.. anybody know how to do so? I am having the same problem that ben is having.. click on the link and get transfered to a school website
o-....o-.....o!!!! ouendan!!!!! help us>: we are poor>:
I'm having the same problem as ben and zilla. I click on the link for the game and it transfers me to the school site.
This game looks fun; I hope a working link to it shows up.
The link is to the College. Does that also mean it's overloaded?
Hello all - I'm one of the creators of Bodilies. Thanks for all your kind words!
The school servers had some problems, but now they're back. It had a redirection page for a while, though, so you might have to clear your browser cache to get to the proper page instead of being redirected.
Thanks for playing bodilies!
-Jeroen
This game is absolutely fabulous. It's less of a game than an interactive book of religious oppression through the government. And as I played through it, I found myself repeating lines under my breath. The dialogue is powerful, the storyline is beautiful, and this game is an absolute jewel. Please, make more like it.
Wow! This game was great. The only bad thing with this game is the ending, not that it is rubbish, but the fact that the game doesn't go on for longer. You have to make a sequal! You must! Please!
This game is definitely the best Online Game I've ever played.
The Music is very nice.
Wow!! I am so completely impressed with this game.
The gameplay, the clever humour, the haunting music, the 'just perfect' graphics, and the core that the game revolves around being such a humane philosophy.
Bravo to all of the creators...I look forward to immersing myself in your future efforts.
finally its back!! yay!! i can go farther than the alley! haha
I think the game was prety good. I liked that I could finish it without a walkthrough. Nice casual game; BUT, I cannot forward it to friends for the following reason, and suggest the author make changes.
Using the F word is totally unnecessary to make his point
Good luck to the developers; and, I hope to see more from them in the near future.
I just beat it with no walk throu it took me about 15 minutes and the end i get is that they are just germs on a human and the hawks are just birds. you just become what the staranger became a prisonor to the church.and oh at the launch pad holograh wavy effect was cool and that the prisonor was a hawk.
When I use the camera to take a photo of the slums or the Twilight City my cursor disappears and I can't do anything. Also after I talk the mine manager into letting me work there, the screen goes black and I can't do anything there either as the cursor has disappeared. Has anyone else had this problem and can advise? Thanks.
Jeroen Stout, I hope they gave you an excellent grade on this. I hope you write games and software when you finish. Thank you.
You'd think with such effort, though, and graphics, and story, the authors would have done a little spell checking.
Still, nice little game.
with this game, I get just the title page and when I click on start new game, the screen goes black and music comes on, but it stops and starts. I don't mean to annoy, but this has been bugging me for the last two days when I try to start it
amazing game. music is sweet
Awesome game.
Loved the graphics, had to get quite a bit of help to complete it though!
The background music to the game is based on the theme from the TV show, Carnivale! Good game!
Wow. Can't believe I missed this one until now. What a beautiful and really neat game.
I didn't mind the spelling 'differences' - most of which were of the color colour category.
The story and humor really worked. The art is awesome, the puzzles very logical.
Love, love, love this one.
I just wish

But I guess it made circular logic to have him become another 'Hawk' on a new world.
Ugh! I hated it! I love point and click games but this was just a waste of time. Everyone kept on talking and there is no way you can get around all that conversation!
I like plots as much as the next person but this was just annoying.
Oh my god (oops, i mean oh my allah) i absolutely love this game. The whole "war-against-the-church-gone-mad" theme is simply amazing. I think that any game with a revolutionary theme is great because it really inspires change. It's fun to think of true freedom of religion, free to do whatever you want without the church trying to dictate everything you do. I encourage everyone to try this game. But hurry! Before the Christian Church finds out and throws a hissy fit over it. Truely fun game. 5 stars!
Wow! Congratulations! This plot is really forward thinking and original. I mean, it's almost like, freethinking, man. Can we be sure that this game won't be shut down by teh (sic) powers that be?
If we get our wish to abolish the Church, should we allow people to actually be Christians if they choose--theoretically--without coercion?
HTH,
A
Too late. Game doesnt seem to be up. Anyone know of another hosted location?
The game is working fine for me. What happens when you try the URL linked to above?
When I try to go to the game all I get is some PHP thing. Nothing about a game. Does anyone have a link that works?
