A missile is launched and it is up to you to solve the mysteries and rituals of The Shrine and save the world.
In this amazing and well-produced point-and-click adventure by Aztec, you will encounter lots of items to find, hidden rooms, and various contraptions to activate and control.
Move the mouse around each scene to locate positions to click. The mouse cursor will turn into a hand to alert you that something may be there. This helps prevent the pixel hunting frustration found in many Flash point-and-click games. Instead, the difficulty in this game comes from using the items you find to solve puzzles and reveal hidden clues about the true nature of this mysterious place.
Although a walkthrough will surely be posted here soon, do yourself a favor and don't give up on this excellent adventure. It isn't often a game of this quality appears on the Web to play for free, and there is a deep, rewarding experience contained within it to keep you challenged for at least an hour or two. Unfortunately there is no way to save your progress in this otherwise exceptional game. Play The Shrine.
Cheers to SteBu for the link. =)
Jinja (The Shrine) walkthrough now available!
Comments (may contain spoilers)
hahah it was right in front of me
Hmmm. I can't figure out what to do with the green and bkue discs. But I haven't found the sword / rifle to add to the mirror and the green thing yet... And how do you get the black plate off??
Ok then:

i found a what i think might be a hidden item

I think im at a similar stage as Adam

ive re-raised the lions after adding the bits to them, ive unlocked all the locked doors, placed the orbs in the secret room, and "activated" the gun, but am completely stuck now.
Here's what I have up until now.
Can't seem to activate the laser cooling system, seems that you need to do something with statue's and the switches.
Spoilers up until where I'm at...
Main screen!

- get smallbox

- get the green and blue ball

- get firestones down by the chest
Proceed to the right

Go back to the main screen and press up (to the temple)

- get key (next to the shrine in the middle)

- (use crowbar/iron bar)

- get hammer!
- use crowbar on the rock several times
- get magnifying glass
Go back down
move to the right

click down

- get ducktape
- read note (doens't really make sense)
Move back to the right (watching the stonedude and the shrine)

- use tape on leak
- get key
- use key on smallbox

go back to mainscreen

- go down cave
- get bow
- use hammer on left side of the painting
- get sword (put on the shrine)
go back up and to the leftside of the temple(next to the statue)

- isn't she cute :D:D
- now use hammer on the plateau on the left side 2 times(just under the cat)
- get handles
go back to main screen now go left

Back to mainscreen

- use key on electricbox
- get fuse
Go back and up to the temple (with the stonedude)

- open door by pressing grey (purple) button
- click the ceiling panel
- get doll
- click left hand of stonedude
- put in doll
turn around facing the arc

- turn them (will move statues in main screen up
- click on arc
- use bow on the circle
go back to mainscreen

- get tube
- get pointy tube
- go back up and turn handles (making the statues come down again)
- go to mainscreen
- click on statue and put tube in right statue
- put pointytube in left statue
go back up to temple (with stonedude)

- put blue ball right
- put green ball left
Allright that's it. I've tried almost everything with the statues and the switches. Also couldn't figure out what to do with the fuse and the steelplate in temple.
Guess the papersheet in the cabinet in the temple on the left side (laser cooling system) has something to do with it.
Makers put in a little joke?? (mainscreen) just a little bit under the to the left arrow is a small area where you can click. Dunno if it's worth translating or if it's just a joke.
Rich - your code is almost right. How are you coming up with the last digit?
Hint about the black plate:

the code is:

Some help.....

the "joke" is Good ぜ! The first green snack
Can you back up a little?
Where is the gun?
I managed to get as far as the walkthrough posted above on my own, and found myself in the same position as Dungar. I read you post jay, and have tried every item I have repeatedly on the black plate but nothing seems to work.

Looking for the gun?

wszhdmhj
If you lighted up the eyes of the statue then turn around.

Actually, I already did.
the gun is not working ahahhahah this is so irritating
ive noticed something, and im not sure it means anything but on both the first and second floor of the shrine when you move your mouse over the white curtain thing on the right side it turns to the finger thing, but nothing happens when you click on it
As RuDeF pointed out above you need to use the gun first on the

i figured out what to do with the rifle

Where is the rifle? And where do I put the fuse?
The rifle is the same thing as the gun. Look for a hint about it 7 comments up from yours.
The fuse goes in the fuse box. :p
Hi,
I'm confused by the code - I can see symbols but have no idea how to relate them to numbers...

This is the first time I've had to ask for help, normally someone has already answered my question, so thanks. And thanks for this site, it's a little too brilliant - I never get any work done after I've been here, so I have to leave it until last thing... :-)
Dungar,
It seems that, according to other posts, there is a code. No, it is not in Japanese. You see the hints on certain objects.

Hope that helps.
how do u get to the back room
on the right side of the drawers there is the symbol on the base of the statue and a four i asume you get the other three numbers though that one and the diagram on the roof, also the the symbol on the statues doll is the same as the one on the bottom of the diagram on the room
Seems like a lot of work just for

I got everything and solved the game using the code given above, but how did you get the last digit? The only place that symbol appears is

Question regarding the rifle. I've followed the comments from Jay and RudeF about

Still stuck like phoenix? What specifically is the problem?
Have you tried hitting it repeatedly? Note my first hint above: if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. ;)
Hi, RuDeF and Jay,
I meant that I did what RuDeF suggested with the hammer, but I still can't find where is the gun located.
Have you placed the doll where it belongs? You might have to do that first before the places appear where you need to hammer to get the gun.
i would also like to know how you got the last digit for the code
I did,
the doll in the statue's right hand (our left), and the eyes are shining. And I already broke 2 holes on the wall, next to the door, where the white markings were.
So, what now?
Need Some Help!!

Thanks.
The white patch is just

FULL WALKTHROUGH:

From where you start, click on the statues to the left and right and get both orbs.
Click the bell (the yellow ball with a rope hanging down). Ring it three times; something will fall out.
Go back to where you started. Click on the brown box in the center of the screen. Click it until you can grab the locked box underneath. Also, grab the two rocks to the left of the box.
Go back to where you started, and click the pinkish tile on the far right until it is out of the way; leave it.
Turn right and grab the crowbar.
Go back to the start and into the temple by pressing the top ninja knife. Move the purple cushion; leave the hole for now.
Use the two stones you found on the candle. You will then see something shining to the right of the large cabinet. There will be a key. Take it.
Go back and turn left to find a chest. Open both drawers, and grab the tape.
Go back and click the hole in the floor. Use the tape on the hole. Grab the key, and open the locked box you have to obtain a green bead.
Go back and turn right. Grab the chisel.
Go back and look at the ceiling. In the ceiling, there should be a board with a notch in it (it's in the far left corner). Click it to get a more close-up view. Use the crowbar on it twice. Click the hole.
Use the crowbar on the large rock four times. Click the hole to find a lens. Take the lens.
Go back and click the black and white screen to find a hammer underneath. Take it; this will come in handy several times.
Go down to the main floor of the temple, and click the floorboard that fell. Grab the doll underneath.
Click the brown statue's right hand (which would be on your left). Place the doll in it.
Click the bottom ninja knife to turn around; you should see the main entrance to the temple, a red arch, two holes on either side, and two white circles on either side of the doorway. Hit them both with the hammer twice. Click the right hole and grab the gun. Leave the left hole for now.
Turn around again, and use the gun on the candle you lit at the beginning of the game. This will light the fuse.
Turn right and shoot the black metal plate five times. Click to find the USB port and a clue for later in the game (I will give you the code; you don't have to worry about the clue).
Go to where you first started and turn left. Water should be flowing; grab the shiny object (a key) in the well.
Go back and use the chisel twice on the dirt where the pink tile used to be. Click the hole and grab the bow. By the man's elbow, you should see a crescent-shaped shadow. Use your hammer on it thrice; grab the sword underneath.
Go to the main screen and click just to the left of the left statue. Aww, cute kitty. :) Use the hammer on the tile the cat's head is laying on twice. Grab both the handles.
Go back and click just to the right of the right statue. Open the box with the new key; grab the fuse and turn on both switches.
Go back into the temple, and turn around until you're facing the door back outside. You should see two holes in the wall; place the handles here. Turn them both once.
Click the red arch, preferably in the middle of the large red-and-black bar. You should see a white circle. Use the bow on the white circle you see.
Go outside. Notice the two statues have moved. Click them both, and grab the cylinder and the cone.
Go back into the temple and turn both the handles. Go back outside.
Use the cylinder and the cone on the two statues.
Go back into the temple and turn both handles again. Leave the statues there.
Click the left hole in the wall. Insert the fuse.
Go to the cabinet by the brown statue, in the main screen of the temple. Place the sword, and the green bead in the tray, and the lens in the lower circle. Go back to the main part, click the black square that just opened, and press the gray button. A door will open to a super-awesome machine.
Place the green orb in the left hole, and the blue in the right.
To the bottom-right of the machine, there should be a slot. Place the USB port in the slot.
Click the screen below the machine. The code is 7641.
And you're done! :)
On a personal note, I'm so excited I finished it all on my own. I've been a huge fan of these kind of games forever, but I've never finished one all by myself. And I made my first walkthrough, too! :D
Once the hole is large enough, you can just click on the hole for a close-up, and then take the gun out.
Thanks, Metanaito!
One hint, for people like me who can't find the gun:

Matanaito,
Good Spoiler.I was stuck at the very last part (forgot to put the lions up! Thx
No fair. I want a

where do i find where to put the code in?
Very good game. and finally one with some meaning ( for those who played The Shochu Bar might agree to what im saying ) I thought i made a good choice wasting an hour of my time on this game. ALSO

How do you

I had to resort to reading the walkthrough when I got stuck, so I know that's what's supposed to happen, but I can't get it to. I think I am dumb.
im proud to say i made it most of the way by myself :) but i did have to have a lil help.. just a lil
If possible, could someone translate the Easter egg/joke that Dungar and connor refer to? I found it by happenstance and am really curious as to what it said...
where do i enter the code???
@Todd -

Thanks Metanaito, I got all the other numbers just fine so i just guessed to get the last number. Then i read a few comments also having the same problem as me. Well hopfully anyone else wondering where the last number came from could read your comment. Thanks again.
p.
The Easter egg message simply says:

...
I don't get it, either.
a little help with the code for does who not wish to cheat

This game is very strange. Fairly good for an escape-ish type game. Is 1:02 the maximum amount of time it can record?
1:02 the maximum? No, I think that's very unlikely since my 'score' when I finished was 2:56. (I like to take my time.) =)
Am I the only idiot in the world that can't get the chest of drawers open? I click on the handles, nothing other than the handles waving around. Same thing if I click on the drawers themselves. It's anticlimactic at this point, but have I offended ye gods of duct tape?
I'm in the screen where I presume the pw goes, but can't figure out how to enter it?!?!!
I really appreciated the color coding- things that were the same color as the things you were supposed to use them with--although at first I was getting it subliminally.
Great game & possible to do on one's own.
For some reason it won't let me put in the passcode on the black screen?
Ok so ive been working my head off with this game and i reached what i suppose its the last part, but cant do it, how am i supposed to work out the...

Please will anyone explain the unorthadox ending to me. I don't get it! Gaaah... O_o
Anonymouse--you simply must find the 'key' to your problem. ;-)
LostAlley and Cathy - you'll know it when you see the interface to enter the code. If you're confused, then it's probably not time to enter it yet.
Moro - the ending is the conclusion to the cut scene in the beginning where you saw the missile taking off. What is so unorthodox about that?
i just can't enter the code. AHHH it is frustrating.
I can't put the code !!!
Oh, I got it ! you just have to make sure you turn on both switches before you can enter the code, it's important to see they look on and off the same.
How do you use the stones on the candle?
I try but the stones just go back.
Can someone help me?
How do you use the gun?
Yoso - keep trying. Perhaps you're trying in the wrong place?

Kelly - you have to fire it up first. (hint hint)
"Am I the only idiot in the world that can't get the chest of drawers open? I click on the handles, nothing other than the handles waving around. Same thing if I click on the drawers themselves. It's anticlimactic at this point, but have I offended ye gods of duct tape?"
I have the same problem. Handles just wave but the drawers don't open. Nor does the gun appear when I use the hammer on the spots on the wall.
I think this game is broken :/
@Lixivium -

Help! I have almost finished, I have worked out the code but I don't know where to enter it?! Tough game!
Never mind...I got it!

Not like I spent an hour trying to play this game or anything!!!!

oh well..
i think this is the less intuitive game i have ever seen..
i normally love those escape game, but this one.. sooooo complicated and anti-logical that i didn't really like it..
i had to follow the walkthrough most of the time..
(btw, i really don't understand how you guys find all this out.. you have way more patience than me.. lol)
thanks for the walkthrough, otherwise i would still be there, thinking that it's not really fun.. lol
Finally finished. Boy, there was a lot of stuff in that game that simply didn't make sense. Maybe just cause I couldn't read it, but still!
I can't find the chisel! Please help me! It doesn't seem to be anywhere in the temple.
to Katie J.
the chisel looks pretty spade-like to me. i'd go so far to call this spade(-like object) a spade.
... unless i haven't found the chisel yet?
This is driving me insane. I do fine up until the bit where you dig the dirt? Where do you dig?
Thanks a lot
I'd just like to say, that it seems like an excessively arduous process for a missile defense system.
"Mr. President I'm sorry... there's a nuke headed for the capital... but I can't find the Duct Tape..."
Hahaha! Good one, ShallowGrin! And so true, so true. =)
thanks Metanaito, thanks everyone who helped us out :)
Thanks for the great walkthrough (except the chisel is a shovel - LOL).
As to the easter egg - I assume it may be referring to the classic movie Soylent Green, but I could be wrong.
There is a little hidden item left of the stone lantern. The boy says: "Delicious! Founder Green snack."
Don't ask me about the meaning...
okay, I beat the game only looking at the walkthrough one at the end for the code, but I don't get the end. What did you do and what was the purpose????
How and where do I enter the code?
TaladorPhoenix, after you input the code, did you press the arrow (on the keypad)?
What you did:

...was save the day!
The purpose was:

...to prevent the missile from striking the shrine.
There was a cool cut scene movie at the end. :)
Meme
You enter the code by

using a numerical keypad that activates once you click on the active black screen, bottom center, between the places you just placed the green and blue orbs.
* Once you enter the code (see walkthrough, top-of-page) - be sure to use the keypad arrow to enter the code for a cool cut scene movie
Great Walkthrough, Metanaito!
Thanx
I can't even start the game :( I followed the link, clicked on 'English' and now all I have is a nice white box with writing above it saying 'The missile is approaching the Shinto shrine.
Please intercept it.' I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.6 on Windows 2000. Any ideas?
Ok, I can't enter the code. done everything, got the screen active, but can't enter it at all
how do I open the drawers?
I keep clicking. but nothing happens have I done something or is there more to it?
This was a fun game. looked great and was fun to play
Main power on
sub power on
radar system activated
laser 1
laser 2
security code
does it it look like this??
but i still cant type in code
for those of you that can't seem to put in the code

I can't click on the statues (for step 25 of the walkthrough)....I've got everything else though...
Oh yeah...and I actually found out how to open the door before, so it's open now while I'm trying to click on the statues...does that make a difference?
never mind, got it, I didn't realize you had to

The game doesn't load ._. could you please post an alternative link?
The game won't load for me either.
Try the direct link to the SWF:
http://aztecgames.sakura.ne.jp/INTERFACE2.swf
Or, use the Japanese page:
http://aztec.sakura.ne.jp/jinja/INTERFACE2.html
It actually uses the same SWF as the English page does.
If anyone is interested (this knowledge actually helped me a bit, as I knew immediately where to place certain objects):

Waheyy ^^ Just completed by myself =D
Great site! I've been playing "escape" games here all week. I've also appreciated the hints every now and then, so.... I figured I would leave my first one.
A better explanation for the code (it actually makes complete sense with no guessing)!!!!

- Ohkuninushi is the statue in the shrine. His symbol is between his feet and (after placing Sukuna-Bikona in his hand) he points to 4 o'clock.
- Amaterasu is upstairs painted on the wall. Her symbol is on her dress and she points to 7 o'clock.
- Sukuna-Bikona is the little doll. Her symbol is also on her dress and she points down to 6 o'clock (but only after she is in Ohkuninushi's hand).
- Susanowo is in the hole in the ground. His symbol is painted on the wall and he points to 1 o'clock.
On the final machine, there are 4 familiar symbols below the keypad. In order they are Amaterasu, Sukuna-Bikona, Ohkuninushi, Susanowo. 7 6 4 1
