Anyone with fond memories of the old arcade days will remember TRON, though few seem to remember the film. The movie-inspired arcade game Light-Cyles spawned a host of clones and actually earned more than the movie during its initial release.
ArmageTron Advanced is one of those clones. Fortunately there are a few things about this game that set it apart from the others:
- It's free and available for every OS.
- It's in 3-D rather than the classic top-down arcade style.
- It also has a free, easy-to-use online multiplayer option.
The object of the game is to not hit a wall, though there's far more to it than that. The player pilots a Light-Cycle and can neither speed up nor slow down, only turn left or right using the Z and X keys. As the Light-Cycle moves it leaves behind a solid trail called a wall. Any other players (including yourself) that run into the wall die.
Walls never disappear, so you'll have to be careful not to work yourself into a corner and use your walls to work other players into corners. The last cycle left standing wins. It's also important to note that the closer the player drives to a wall, the faster his Light-Cycle will go. The result is an exiting, fast-paced game full of strategic planning. ArmageTron Advanced also comes with an offline mode for those of us with a slow connection. The AI and gameplay are still completely customizable, so you aren't losing too much.
Speaking of customization, that brings me to another of this program's high points: you can change pretty much whatever you want about the game. When you combine that fact with a wealth of different game modes and possibilities, you have yourself a very addicting and entertaining arcade game.
ArmageTron Advanced is a free multiplayer game with simple, casual-oriented gameplay. What've you got to lose? Click to download for Windows, MacOS X or Linux.

I'm actually seen quite a few Tron clones, and also played the one in Kingdom Hearts 2, so I must say I think this is a very good one!

i've played a Tron game before and it was also 3D, however i think this is a different version or a new edition, i also unfortunatly lost the old one. But ah man! is it ever fun! i love it the way you slowly run all your opponents out of the game! i love light-cycles:) thanks for posting this one, i'm eternally in your debt as i couldn't find it after i lost it!

You can too speed up in Tron if it supports the wall speed type mode. Just get close to another trail and you will go faster.
At least that is the way it works in my favorite version, GLTron.
It is also available for ALL OS.

There IS a brake button, you just have to set it on the keyboard. It comes in handy when you have to get in narrow corridors or do sharp turns.
Is anyone up for a game? ;)

Mmm, looks like fun! I'll have to give it a try a bit later when I have more time. Just one note: I think you meant "losing" instead of "loosing" at the bottom of the 3rd last paragraph.

I've played GLTron for ages - also 3D, and it's got 4-player splitscreen - much fun when friends are over.

Isn't there ANOTHER game like this, except for a cell phone with GPS enabled? You get to play it in real life!! Against a real human!! Just don't get a ticket when you drive at 95mph to avoid being boxed in...
As for this game, I have to wait for the unbearably long loading time to end...
(waiting)
(still waiting)
Finally. Wow, that was FUN. Amazing.
I like:
Toggling with the setting in dumb and random ways
(Instant win zone activated as soon as it starts with -10 arena size is crazy, and 10 arena size is BIG)
I don't like:
Other players using ridiculously strong AI's. I think on of them auto-wins all games by going around the whole board in 5 seconds.

By default, you can speed up as suggested by Emory. You get in close to a wall and travel parallel to it, 'grinding' along, for a massive speed boost. the closer you are the to wall, the faster you go. One of my favourite games of all time.

Cool game, the online element caught me out as I ended up in a tron-footy match rather than the usual head-to-head! :0)
I like the new site colours Jay...

Wow, pretty new colors! the tiling could stand to be a bit more seamless, though.

Love the site colors, though I can see a bit-o-tiling.
It's (almost) winter! YAY!

I've played this game before at school. It was unblocked (Thank god), But I didn't really like it that much :/
All the kids at my school play it during class and run their own private servers which we play at. It's kinda nifty, but I got bored of it.
There was another clone I found somewhere, it was japanese, though.

The tiling?!
I was looking for a soft powder blue texture for the background and the best one I could find had too much detail, so I softened it up a bit with a blur filter knowing full well it would affect the tiling. I didn't think it would matter... gosh was I wrong(!) =p

Armage Tron is lightyears ahead of me. It looks stunning, but dang if I can control my bike. I must be configuring it wrong.
Help me Jebus!!

You need a red and green one, too. And photo chop santa hats on the reviewers >:D

I'm really enjoying this, but I'm wondering if anybody else can tell me what the deal is with the diamond around some players? Do I have one, but I can't see it? What does it represent?
Also, I've seen some really weird stuff, like guys driving into the wall and just staying there for half a minute. I was wondering if it was likely that these are hacks, or just M4D SK11LZ?

I love this version! I am having a problem, though. I have tried twice to play on a server and would get to play for a few minutes, then (during both visits) I got booted for spamming? What the heck? I don't even know how to spam!
At the moment I can't go back to where I was for fifty-five minutes...what's going on here? I must admit I'm not that computer savvy, but is there something I'm missing or some measure I can take to keep from getting booted due to the imaginary SPAM? I'm so frustrated and lost. At least I can still play by myself...*pouts in corner*. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on and how to fix or avoid this problem? If anyone has any pointers they could share them with me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. :)

A diamond around a players head means they're chatting, or using the chatbot
