Mono

AndrewMono is a downloadable Windows game that is described as 'one part Asteroids, one part Robotron, and one part Paint Shop Pro'. Created by the talented guys over at Binary Zoo, you play as a plucky yet resourceful mono.jpgcircular object set on changing its surroundings from black to white (or white to black, depending on mode). You accomplish this by destroying colored circles (red, green, or blue) which split in classic asteroid fashion. Upon destruction, they leave behind some of their coloring, assisting you in your goal. In addition, you can pick up power-ups to further help in your quest (pro tip: stars improve your weapons). Coupled with three difficulty modes, and the ability to import your own music, this is a well designed little game.

Analysis: There's not a whole lot more to say about this game. There are no bosses or fancy graphics, and it doesn't need them. It's a testament to what a couple guys with some creativity and talent can put together. The only real weakness is the lack of in-game tutorials, but as the controls are simple, it doesn't really need it. Just use the mouse to move and the right button to change the direction of fire.

The other downside is that a download is necessary to play, and it does require the latest directX as well. It's a pity that there is no browser based version, but if you can overcome these obstacles, then you will find yourself rewarded with a game experience that is both simple and oddly addicting. Click, then scroll downward to try it out.

this game is cool! pretty wild!

Says it needs 32 bit hardware or something. I don't know much about graphics, but it sounds to me like it needs more than I have.

Runtime 1507 error. Anybody else get this?

Its so simple
but so fun

Star improves weapon, there is one that gives a burst, one that gives an invincibility of sorts (seems like you still lose weapon levels but not damage?), but what does the circle do?

in response to the error question, i got a similar message when i minimized the screen right after i started the game, something about the sprite not being found...and i have no idea what the circle does...

@_@
Ok, wow. If I ever start thinking about taking drugs, I'll just go and play this game.

Stupid comments aside, I really like it.
I'm not GOOD at it - but I like it.

It works with my tablet, which is nice.

What do the circle powerups do, except explode and send the area around them back towards the wrong color if you don't pick them up?

Circle powerups add power. You lose power when you get hit.

Love this one!!

I'm fairly convinced an error is caused by having a dual core processor. I've emailed the author about it but they have no way to test it. Mono was one of my favorite games on my old PC and it's a shame I can't get it to run on my new system. Problem can be fixed with most games by going into the system monitor and changing the affinity to one processor, but unfortunately Mono crashes out whenever you minimize or alt+tab. Kind of sad.

Mono is a great game everyone should experience.

Has anyone beat this? Is it possible to get 100%? It seems like it stops around 84% - 86%.

I'm having trouble with the game. Everything works just fine except there's an area at the bottom of the screen where if anything goes there - balls, powerups, bullets, etc. - it leaves a trail behind.

I love this game!!!

One of my favorite freeware games along with Plasma Pong...

Mine doesn't paint the screen! I updated DirectX and still nothing is happening. No matter how much I shoot, the screen stays white (or black).

I like this game! Echoes and Mono are the best asteroid type game that I have seen in my whole lifetime.

There are three types of enemies:
Red, Blue and Green
And, I don't have to say this, they leave sparks which leave colors.
However, if you move to a colored area, the enemies will attack you on a different way, based on what color you're on.
If you are on:
RED - enemies will likely fire at you.
BLUE - enemies will home at you.
GREEN - enemies will go faster.

The rest is on the help format.

For some reason, when I opened the app, my computer said that it had a trojan horse virus and closed it down.

[Edit: Virus checkers are notorious for reporting false positives. It is very unlikely that there is a virus in any of the games we review as we check them all prior to posting any information about them. -Jay]
