Will Wright's GDC Spore presentation

Will Wright's GDC Spore presentationThere was an extensive array of audio-visual equipment, including video cameras and a sound booth, at Will Wright's "The Future of Content" presentation at GDC in March. It was during that presentation that he revealed Spore to the world in great detail. Well, they have finally made a streaming video of that presentation available at the GDC-TV site, accessible only with a free registration. The video is compressed for a few different connection speeds, and it's very well done. Seeing and hearing about Spore straight from Will Wright is a must-see experience. Click.

Also check out gaming steve's interview with Will Wright, part one released this week and next week part two will follow. There are also extensive discussion forums on the topic of spore: Click.

Also, we have an IRC channel set up, #spore on quakenet, for those of you who use it.

The official Spore site is up as well (with a nice flash intro): Click.

Also, I hope to become more active on the site once my exams are over :D.

Thanks for that, and good luck with finishing up your exams, Capuchin.

That game looks incredible, Jay. Do you think the finished version will be as broad and expanding/dynamic as the demo he gave?

If so, it really piques my interest and I honestly would be willing to give gaming another try for it. It seems so completely awesome.

That's a good question, Brendyn. Considering the fact that the same guy who created Sim City and The Sims is responsible for it, I believe it's a safe bet that this "Sim-everything" game will turn out very much like what you saw in the presentation.

I can't wait to get my hands on it, but I hear it won't be out until next year (I'm guessing January or February, since that is when The Sims was released back in 2000).

As far as I have heard, It wont be out until at least Fall 2006. He quoted that release date in the presentation i believe. I would also give it some leeway also, but Will is normally very good with sticking to release dates he sets.

I also believe that he didnt show everything In that demo, and that it is somewhat more expansive than we saw. For example, there are rumours (and it may well have been confirmed) that you dont have to go onto land, and can have a sea based colony. Then when you inhabit other planets without water, you build cities with a bubble full of water around them (like the one he showed in the demo).

I personally am really looking forward to this game.

Also, I liked the accretion discs. Thought they looked pretty damn nice.
I have an Astrophysics exam this morning. Fun Fun.

Any hope at all of seeing Spore on Mac platforms?

After watching the GDCE lecture, I think this 'game' has incredible potential as a teaching tool for art, philosophy, anthropology, and theology (besides CS and games-theory) courses, especially at the university and above levels.

Near the end of Wright's lecture, the idea of 'getting through' the goal-oriented portion in order to be able to create and interact with (read: browse like an internet of creation) a galaxy in all its glory as the real 'point' of the game was very compelling. Made his tangent story of his duaghter's microscope and telescope very relevant!
