The end of Netscape/Mozilla?

| Comments (3) | Views (8)

Two landmark decisions were made with respect to web browsers this week: AOL Time Warner agreed to settle their lawsuit and cooperate with Microsoft over licensing MS browser and digital media technologies; and Microsoft announced that it will abandon standalone versions of its browser, Internet Explorer, forcing you to upgrade your OS to get the latest version of IE.

I have grown quite accustomed to using Netscape, being a welcome alternative to Microsoft's product, and I know there are others out there that feel the same way. What impact will all this have on Netscape & Mozilla, both of which are owned by parent company AOL Time Warner?

I doubt that this will stop the hundreds of open source developers who are working on Mozilla. Netscape only has under ten people working on Mozilla.

i hope you are right. although i use Netscape as my browser of choice i also use Mozilla at RIT and both tend to render my pages with the fewest 'issues'. it would be a sad day if we were to lose either one or both of these technologies.

Man this was a bleak time in web browsers, huh? Firefox still just an early glimmer and Microsoft still managing to largely maintain its stranglehold on access to the internet.

But at least your fears didn't come to pass and instead things got much much better in the long run.
