Knightality

Johnny123 You're a knight. You have a sword. There's a princess to rescue. Knightality wants you to do what comes naturally. Developer Daniel Zhuravlev presents us with a title where immediacy is the name of the game. Everything in this top down brawler game comes at you fast and fun. Move with the [WASD] keys and shoot tiny little sword blasts in all four directions with the [arrow] keys (or by clicking), dodging and weaving through enemies as you go. Reflexes are key. The game isn't Meat Boy hard, but it's not afraid to throw some curveballs your way that will have you dying and restarting, all the more ready to vanquish your foes.

In addition to your lightning fast sword blasts, you've got some bombs you can plant with the [spacebar]. They're not the most useful powerup in the world, and dying doesn't carry any consequences beyond a quick inconvenient restart of the level, but that just means there's more gameplay to enjoy. In Knightality, you live and die by dual-hand coordination. Shooting with the [arrows] and running with the [WASD] feels darn satisfying when pulled off correctly, especially when you're mowing your way through a horde of encroaching slime monsters. The challenge evolves with the enemies. Cookie cutter one-hit mooks give way to sorcerers with tricky ranged attacks and skeleton warriors ready to disembowel your cartoonish protagonist. A large world full of branching pathways and a fun SNES-esque soundtrack rounds out this eminently gratifying experience. If you want a smooth, no frills, "just one more level" inducing game, check out Knightality and prepare to be addicted.

Actually, dying does carry a consequence other than restarting the level. Each time you die, one bomb is automatically removed from your inventory. So if you have two bombs and die twice, you'll restart the level with zero bombs.

I ran into a problem the first time I transitioned between screens. On the next section, the display turned black (mostly), with the picture briefly flickering into view about once per second. The music was still going, it was responding to input, I just couldn't see.

When I restarted, the opening screen got this dark flickering effect, making it impossible to play.

ehhh, too easy. It's over man, and there ain't nothing left to do.

I wish there was a way to customize the controls: I want the arrow keys to control movement, and WASD to control my weapon, i.e. exactly the opposite of how the game is set up. As it is, I just get too uncoordinated trying to move with my left hand.

Any hints on the boss? With no health line for him I can't tell if I'm doing any damage at all.

I think the "exploration" tag here may be a mistake? I don't see a way to go back and explore anything, only go on through a series of levels.
