dismantlementkeyboard.gifJohnBWhen you see the word "dismantlement" in front of a noun, especially when that noun is a gadget filled with nifty parts to dig through, you know it's time for another installment of the excellent point-and-click Dismantlement series! Just like previous releases, Dismantlement: Mini Keyboard charges you with the task of taking apart a gadget with nothing more than a screwdriver. The insides of this contraption won't be familiar to anyone who has actually pulled apart a keyboard before, and there might be a surprise (or six) waiting for you behind that rear panel!

Use the mouse to click on parts of the keyboard, zooming in on certain areas and opening tiny hatches when applicable. Any exposed screw can be removed with a simple click, and you can move back through the parts of the keyboard or even view the opposite side with the button in the top corner of the screen.

Much like a room escape game, Dismantlement: Mini Keyboard's challenge rests in its puzzles, many of which are code-related. For example, in this rather unusual keyboard, removing the back panel reveals some hatches that can only be opened by entering the proper sequence of numbers or letters. We don't know about you, but our keyboard certainly doesn't have that feature tucked away behind the circuits. If the Dismantlement series was going for realism, however, there would be a distinct lack of timers and bombs in things like toasters and tea canisters. We can suspend our disbelief for a few moments while we get absorbed in a new Dismantlement game!

Grab your screwdriver and get crackin', it's time to take apart a mini keyboard!

Dismantlement: Mini Keyboard Walkthrough

To begin: click the big screw, then click the other big screw.

Opening the Keyboard

You start facing the front of the keyboard. Click the round "To Rear" button at the top right to view the back of the keyboard.

Notice on the back:
@AAA@
GDBER

Click "To Front" to return to the front of the keyboard.

Remember those letters from the back? You need to type those in.
Hint:

You can't use the shift button here. Maybe there's another button you could use?

And don't forget that those letters appeared on two lines.

Solution:

Hit "Caps" (to the right of the space bar). Then type "@AAA@". Hit enter, then type "GDBER".

Go to the back of the keyboard. Click to remove the screws that have appeared, then click the back to remove that.

Lock 1

You should now be looking at the green innards of the keyboard. Click the big black square in the middle. Looks like we have two locks to figure out before we can open this square. Click "Back" to back up.

Click the green rectangle to the left of the black square. You see a bunch of letters and numbers. The top line says, "Q7 - U". What could that mean?

If you click the rectangle again to open it up, you can see that you need to enter four letters, numbered (1), (2), etc.

Back up and go to the front of the keyboard.

Look at the letter Q. It's at the beginning of a row. If we count seven letters from the beginning of the row (with Q as #1), then 7 would be U. Hence, "Q7 - U".

Remember the other letters and numbers from the back? Apply the above process to those other letters, but in the A row. Then go to the back of the keyboard again.

Open the green rectangle. Enter the code you figured out earlier. The code is:

SDGL

That unlocks Lock 1. Close the rectangle and back up.

Lock 2

Click the white rectangle to the right of the black square. Click it again to open it up. You again need to enter four letters. Above these letters are some boxes. Click a box, and it lights up. There are also some arrows next to each of the boxes.

Click one of the boxes to light it up. Take note of the direction of the arrow by that box, then go to the front of the keyboard.

One of the letters on the keyboard should be lit up. Remember what direction that arrow was going in? Imagine that arrow is pointing from the letter now instead of the box. That arrow points to the letter you need to enter on the back of the keyboard.

Repeat this process for all the boxes until you have four letters, then enter those letters in the white rectangle. The code is:

GGGG

Remove the screws that appear, then remove the white rectangle.

Lock 3

Zoom in on the black square, then click it to remove it. You are supposed to enter three numbers here. But where is the clue?

Go back to the front of the keyboard.

Those keys look sort of crooked. If you start clicking them, some will fall out. Click every one until you've gotten rid of all the removable ones. This should reveal three numbers.

Go to the back of the keyboard and enter the code:

881

Back up from the black square, then remove the four screws around the outside edge of the keyboard. Then click the green part to remove it.

The Bomb

Zoom in on the bomb. Click the two screws to remove them, then click the DANGER lid to open it. You need to enter three letters. Where is that clue?!

Go to the front of the keyboard.

Click the remaining keys to get rid of more of them. This reveals another code, this time in the negative space left by the missing keys.

Go to the back of the keyboard and enter the code:

IUH

Then click the screw under the letters. Click the clock to remove it, then click the screw that appears. Click again to remove the bomb. Go to the front. Remove all the remaining keys. Click the four screws that appear, then click the black section in the middle.

Congratulations! Hopefully you didn't blow up too many times.

Is there a trick to getting the shift and caps keys to work consistently? Clicking quickly doesn't work. I have tried different browsers. I love this series, but this is a unecessary barrier for puzzle fans!

a little disappointed... too short.

Dag nabbit. I know I'll figure it out the second I post, but somebody plz give me a hint - what obvious thing am I missing about

the puzzle on the back right (white cover, 4 letters w/ buttons over them)?

Reply

That was nice. Actually the first dismantlement I solved all by myself. No walktrough required at all. I'm so happy :D

Reply

@swooning

have you notice

any change anywhere while lighting up the buttons?

I'd welcome a hint my self on the left hand one (lock 1)

Reply

Definitely too easy. I've *never* completed one entirely without hints before. The very first puzzle gave me pause for a moment, but once I figured out that I had to use

Harder next time, please?

Walkthrough

Flip the keyboard over, and notice the code on the back reads

@AAA@
GDBER

Go back to the front and type this in. Don't forget to put caps lock on (works for the capital letters and the @ symbols), and don't forget to hit "Enter" after the first line. You should hear a click.
Flip it over and remove the four screws, and the back panel.
Click the area on the left side of the board. This is the first lock. Notice what's etched here: Q7=U. If you flip your keyboard over, you'll see that the intersection between the Q and 7 keys lands on the U key. Now, find the keys at A2, A3, A5, & A9.

SDGL

Lock 1 is opened. Close, go back and remove the screw to the left of it.
Now for lock 2, on the right. Click the white box, then click again to open. You'll notice 4 boxes on the top of the code, each with an arrow. Click any of them and it'll turn orange. Now turn the keyboard over and notice what key is also orange. Do this for all four, and you'll come up with

HBTF

But this doesn't work. The arrows tell you that the letter you want is beside each of the letters you picked. After the first two, you'll notice they're all pointing to the same letter. The code, then, is

GGGG

Remove the 2 screws, close, and click the white box to remove it. Go back and remove the screw to the right of this area.
Click the center now, then click it again. You need a 3 digit code here. Flip the keyboard over and you'll notice that some of the keys are loose. Click every key that's tilted to get rid of it. The remaining keys spell out the number

881

Go to the back and put in this code. Lock 3 is open. Close and back, and remove the 2 screws above and below the box. Remove the back cover.
Ah, the bomb. Click it to zoom in, and remove the 2 screws and the cover. You need a 3 letter code now. Flip over again and now more keys are loose. The keys don't spell anything, but the empty spaces spell out

IUH

So put that in. Click the screw below it to disarm the bomb. Now click the green light, and remove the screw under that. Click again to remove the bomb. Click back, and go to the front. Remove all the remaining keys and the 4 screws that appear. Click anywhere to finish.

Walkthrough

1st thing:

go to the back of the keyboard (round brown button in upper right)

Notice the 2 lines of code on back. Are they lower case or caps? Are there symbols you can get by hitting the SHIFT key on a keyboard? Write it down or remember it EXACTLY as printed.

Flip the keyboard over to get to the normal view. Type in the code as literally as possible. Use the Caps button when needed to produce a symbol or capital letter. Hit enter after your first line, then finish the rest of the code.

Next Thing:

flip to the back of the keyboard. Notice the screws are visible. Click on them one by one to remove. Now click on the middle of the back panel you're facing to remove it.

3 LOCKS:
Lock #1

In this view (the inside of the back of the keyboard), click on the large green square on the left to zoom in. See those confusing clusters of boxes, arrows, & alphanumericism? Ignore them for right now. Click through to open the puzzle interface.

Notice you have 4 numbers in parentheses above the letters. Notice you can change the letters. Click the CLOSE button, & look at the confusing clusters of boxes, arrows, & alphanumericism again.

You have 4 numbers in parentheses here, too. Notice the cluster at the top of everything else? The one with no number in parentheses? Q7>U That's your code key. The way to use it is to look at the keyboard & locate the key that is at the intersection of the Q row of keys & the 7 column of keys. In this case, the key is the letter U.

SO, to get your full code, you'll need to find the keys that correspond to the numbers in parentheses.
CODE

The code is SDGL

Enter the code, click the CLOSE button, & back out.

A screw has appeared on the left side. Click it to remove. Click on the large black square in the middle to zoom in. Notice the 2 locks. Number 1 is open.

Lock #2

click on the large white rectangle. Click again to open it. Here's another 4-letter code, four buttons that light up when pushed, & arrows on those buttons.

Here's how to use it:
Click on the 1st square (the one pointing left)so that the button turns orange. Click the brown circle 3 times to CLOSE, BACK out, & go TO FRONT. Notice the letter H is lit orange. Remember the left-facing arrow on back? Look at the key to the left of the one that's lit up. It's a G.

Click the brown circle to go TO REAR, & open the white panel again. Enter the letter G in the 1st space, then click to light up the 2nd box (the one with the arrow facing up). Go back to the front & see which letter is lit orange, then follow the corresp[onding button's directional arrow to find your next letter. Repeat this process for the rest of Lock #2.
CODE

GGGG

The lock opens & two screws appear. Click them to remove, then click the brown CLOSE button & back out.

Check the black area again, & you'll see that Lock #2 is open. Click the black panel to remove, & reveal
Lock #3.

The code here will be 3 digits, numbers 1 through 9. Flip back to the front of the keyboard. Notice how some keys are all wonky? Click on the wonky ones & they'll disappear, leaving you 3 digits.
CODE

881

Go back to the back of the keyboard, click on the black area twice & enter the 3-digit code.

More screws have appeared above & below the black square. Click them to remove.

Click again on the white rectangle to remove it. Click on the screw that appears on the right to remove it. Click on the green rectangle, click in the middle, & there we have the famous Dismantlement series time bomb.

Click the screws on each side of the danger label, then click on the label to remove it & get the timer going.

Flip back to the front again, & notice the keys are even wonkier. Click on the wonky ones to remove. Look at the negative space between the remaining keys, & 3 letter should should be visible (if not, you probably still have a few keys to remove.)
CODE

IUH

Click the screw to turn the timer off. Click the green button. Click the screw to remove the remaining bomb parts.

Back out & flip the keyboard over. Click to remove the remaining wonky keys. Click the 4 screws that appear. Click the remaining black frame.

That's it. (My 1st walkthrough....sorry so sloppy)

Walkthrough

First Screws
Press Caps Lock until the light is on then press
(2=@)
@AAA@ [Enter]
GDBER [Enter]
Go to rear of keyboard and click on screws to unscrew, then click on backboard to unattach.

First Puzzle Q7 > U

If Q7 = U
Then A2 = ?, A3 = ?, A5 = ? and A9 = ?

Answer

A2 = S
A3 = D
A5 = G
A9 = L

Second Puzzle Under White door
Each button has an arrow beside it
What happens when you press a button?

Press a button, then flip the keyboard to the front

Why does each button have an arrow?

Each arrow represents the key next to the highlighted key

What order?

H, B, T, F
So the correct order is G G G G in the letter sequence box

Now What?

Unscrew the screws and close the door, Then click on the door to remove it.

Puzzle 3 Main Chip.

Now click on the Central chip and it should pop out.
You see another combination box, this time only 3 boxes.

What to do now?

Flip keyboard to front again

Okay, looking at front, what now?

Remove all the loose keys. ALL of them.

Done that, now what?

What do the remaining keys seem to resemble?

I haven't a clue.

881

Ah. now i see it. What now?

Well, now you've inputted 881 into the third combination box, the third lock should have unlocked. Click back, and back.

Okay, i'm stuck again.

Remove the four screws, on top, bottom, left and right.
Then remove the main board by clicking on it

Done that, i see the bomb. What now?

Remove the two screws on either side of the bomb, and the timer will start to countdown. Start panicking.

Uh Oh!

DON'T TOUCH THE CENTRE SCREW

Okay, that could've come earlier, what now?

Back out, and go to front of keyboard, again remove loose keys.

Yes, i have done that, and i can't see anything..

This time don't look at the remaining keys.

What do i look at then?

The gaps left by the removed keys. what does it spell? / Letters can you see?

I have no idea again. (i'm a bit slow)

I U H

So what? What do i do with that info?

Input it into the bomb.

Inputted, now what?

NOW, you cant touch that centre screw.. Bomb fluid should turn green.

Phew! Anything else?

Yep, now you can take your time, Click on the timer to remove it, and remove all remaining screws and keys.
After timer, remove first screw, then click on the panel it was on, to remove bomb.
Then go to Front, remove all remaining keys, and four screws will appear. Remove them and click centre.

Taa - Daa Phew!! :-)

For a dismantlement game, I thought this was pretty easy. Usually one of their puzzles really stumps me; I probably spent about five minutes on

the coordinate system puzzle

but otherwise it was a walk in the park. The only thing that wasn't quite intuitive was

using carriage returns in the first code, and the fact that shift didn't work but capslock did

Even though it could have been harder, I like how at least dismantlement tries to put a different spin on these very visual/logical puzzles each time. I think other games, particularly the room escapes we see every week, could learn a lot from that...

Was anyone else hoping for

a second bomb when the game didn't end after disarming the first one

?

Anyway, as has been said before, too short and too easy. Still, I had more fun than usual with this one for some reason. I think I just liked

picking the keys off one by one ^^;

Reply

I'm a bit disappointed that there was no use of

the Ctrl-Alt-Del command

, but other than that, quite a fun little game.

Reply

Very nice. On the last one, I managed NO hints (have always needed full walkthrough). On this one, I simply needed the hint for the second lock on the right side.

What shall we dismantle next?

Reply
BuenoCabra April 28, 2011 4:04 PM

@Lavos:

Yes! I was hoping for that. I think this game gives us a look into the psyche of the dismantler. I used to think some deranged psychopath was following him (or her? me?) around putting bombs in stuff, but the compulsion to

completely take the keyboard apart even after defusing the bomb

shows that there's something more going on.

Maybe I'm overthinking this one.

Reply

BuenoCabra -
There is a person armed with ONLY a screwdriver,

an assortment of normal-seeming household objects that have

explosive devices (sometimes more than one)

with ridiculously complex circuits and machinery

and he/she/it has some sort of OCD tendency to dismantle EVERYTHING.

Does the person dismantle other stuff that DIDN'T have 'splosives?

And they're just not shown because they aren't interesting without the *oops* factor?

What caused that tendency, I wonder?

WHY is our person so determined to defuse bombs?

Who PUT the bombs there in the first place!?

Don't forget the Hamburger episode...

Om nom no- *ka-BOOM!*

What reason would give our bombist

Bomber?

Bomberor?

Bombastic?

cause to plant these bombs?

Where is he/she/it getting the material for these devices?

Forget the alleged WMD's...worry about THIS guy!

And lastly:

I just love spoiler tags, don't you?

Bleh, I ran into a glitch right at the end.

Once you get past the bomb and take off the last keys causing the 4 screws on the front to appear, if you undo some but not all of the screws and then look at the back, the screws have disappeared when you go back to the front, making the game impossible to finish.

Dismantlement: Mini Keyboard Walkthrough

To begin: click the big screw, then click the other big screw.

Opening the Keyboard

You start facing the front of the keyboard. Click the round "To Rear" button at the top right to view the back of the keyboard.

Notice on the back:
@AAA@

Perhaps a bit easier than most, but very satisfying. Had trouble finding a couple of the screws, but frantic clicking revealed the plate I needed to remove to find them.

I kind of like that the difficulty of the puzzles in the series varies, so we get some like this that are a nice quick diversion and some with frustrating trying to figure out what's going on. Also, as my partner sits frustrated with lock 2, a reminder that we don't all find the same puzzles easy/hard.

Reply
nerdypants April 29, 2011 1:54 PM

JIGuest, about the screws:

Have you opened locks 1, 2, and 3? The green rectangle, the white rectangle, and the black square? If so, have you removed the white rectangle?

If you've done all that, the four screws should be on the outside edges of the green part. If you move straight out from the edges of the black square, you should find the screws.

Also remember that it can be kind of hard to click the screws (at least, it was for me). You might have to click around a little to find the hotspot.

How the Shift key doesn't work

Reply

@mr1black: I was sorta thinking the same thing. Fleshing the theory out a bit:

I think the bomber may be giving the dismantler some really good reason to take apart all these electronics... but in order to do so, the dismantler must risk his life once for each device by defusing a bomb. This could explain why the timer never starts until he opens the cover: the bomber, being the sicko he is, derives pleasure from the psychological pain the dismantler goes through each time he must decide whether to open the bomb casing, or to forfeit whatever the bomber's dangling in front of his nose...

(This could be the beginning of some interesting Dismantler fanfiction.)
