Weekday Escape

SonicLoverYou could say I'm the raccoon of the JIG staff. Whereas everyone else spends their time with the new games that come out, I scour the garbage cans and dumpsters for the old but good games that missed their time in the spotlight for whatever reason. This time around I scavenged up a pair of small but entertaining room escape packages from a Japanese developer called No1Game. Don't worry, the games are fully translated.

Emergency ExitThe first, Emergency Exit Sign, tells the story of a Japanese all-night worker who just about lives at his office, which becomes a problem when a monster traps him inside. Apparently there's a huge demand for room escape games, and he's just supplying it where it's demanded. Needless to say you've got to help our hapless workaholic drive the monster away by exploiting its one weakness: emergency exit signs.

Game in Game in GameThe second, Game in Game in Game, shows us a rather obsessed escape fanatic who plays a room escape game every day before bed, only to wake up one morning trapped in one. He spends some time reading about his own game on the forums of a website with the ultimate goal of getting out of his own room.

Analysis: Neither Emergency Exit Sign nor Game in Game in Game are particularly remarkable in any category but one, the exception being humor. Both games go out of their way to point out the illogicalities that pop up in room escape games everywhere. (Of course you can't just take some paper out of the copier and put it in the printer; what made you think you could?) Parody has always been one of my favorite varieties of humor, so these games touch my heart.

Aside from the humor factor, both games are fairly standard. The puzzles are logical but creative and match the games' respective themes, there's no pixel-hunting (I'll bet some of you are still complaining about that screwdriver from Purism), and the games themselves are relatively short but enjoyable while they last.

One word of warning: you'll need a bit of knowledge of geography to solve one puzzle in Emergency Exit Sign. Bring up Google if you have to; the monster won't notice.

Oh, these are by the developer formerly known as mmoo! Humour and questioning the weird premises of escape games are standard fare. You should check out mmoo's other games.

HA ha! In "Game in game" if you open the dictionary to a high page number, and then turn to a higher OR lower page number, you still turn the pages from right to left :p

It was cute how you go on a forum to look up how to escape your own room though

Gigig walkthrough

Password is elizabeth.
Check Internet Explorer, go to Favorites and click the japanese icon.
Find the three items that David mentions (they're all in drawers) then keep going down on the forum.
Then go to the bed headboard and pull out five tissues.
Get the red paper.
Go down on the forum.
Lift the blanket.
Fiddle with the curtains (unsure of exact method) and get the blue paper.
Go to the forum and find how to open the DVD player.
Turn the TV on then open the DVD player and close it.
Watch the scene.
Then you can open top drawer of big drawers.
Get spatula.
One of the desk drawers needs the spatula (it has a false bottom) and then you'll get the yellow note.
Go to the forum and then go to the encyclopedia.
Enter LAST and then working out clues you'll get the combo for the bottom drawer in big drawers: 483.
Open drawers, get key, use key on drawer

you are OUT!

The very beginning of Game in Game, the password:

Augh! Wiki'd like mad and it was Elizabeth all along.

And about the curtains:

If anyone knows exaxtly what order you're supposed to click them in, I would really like to know. The clue on the bed didn't make much sense to me. I just clicked the curtains at random until the card fell out.

But yeah, these games were cute. I really liked the idea of using a forum within a game to solve that game.

Reply

I like Gigig, but the curtains are getting on my nerves. I understand the first two thirds of the puzzle, I guess, but the 3rd line is confusing. So unless I'm missing something else, I'm stuck.

Reply

For the curtains:

Dark from the left means you have to make the room completely dark starting with the left curtain.
-Click left, right.

Light from the right means you have to make the room light again by opening the curtians from the right.
-Click right, left

Half from the right means you just need to close the right curtian.

-Click right

Altogether it's left right right left right.

Reply

OK, solved it.

However I still understand how the curtains worked, I simply stumbled upon the correct solutions. Since at the end you basically see the curtains in "action replay", I would love if someone explained it to me why it works the way it works.

Reply

Curtains:

The clue is under the bedspread:

Dark from the left
Light from the right
Half with the right

In this case, left means start with the left curtain, and right means start with the right.

So, this means:

  1. Open them.

  2. Click left curtain, then right, to make it dark.

  3. Click right, then left, to make it light.

  4. Click just the right to make it half-light/half-dark.

i can get up to this point on Game in Game

opening and closing DVD Player. after that i can't open the top drawer. i checked the forum and everything, and i'm not getting a cut scene.

On Gigig walkthrough 2 notes

1)

Playing the game, the walk through leaves out after getting the blue paper to read more of the forum, you need to try and fail opening the top drawer of the dresser. This will let you do the DVD portion.

2)

The last line of the walkthrough should read door not drawer (as in the exit door)

Reply

Thank you for the walkthroughs. However, I would prefer that you not simply tell me the answer to things. Instead, could you show me the how the answer is derived. For example, I could see that the code to the box was the time zones on the map. But I could not see how the pictures of the flags represented those time zones. Being told a password takes the fun out of it. Being guided into how to determine the password keeps me interested.

Sorry to be a pain in the...

I do appreciate the walkthroughs, but I have to avoid them if they simply give me the answer without aiding my understanding.

Reply

I think i'm having a bug with EES. I follow the walkthrough... up to the point where it says "join with cellophane paper". I grab the cellophane paper.

That means, i try to. The normal close-up window appears, but it doesn't show up in my inventory nor can be showed.

But are the games rated green, yellow, orange, or red? I need to know before I decide whether to play them. The ratings system is the whole reason why JayisGames is the site I use to find games.

I have to agree with phdavoid about being given answers outright. Once you're given all the answers, there's no point in playing the game anymore. That said, can anyone offer some insight into how the code relates to the clues on the box and map? Hints only, please, or at least don't give it all away at once.

Hmm... according to the posting dates on lazylaces, both games have been around for six months...

@Cornbread Muffin: I would rate these games a green. They seem perfectly safe to me - no swearing, no violence, no nudity.

@Smoke, about the map and box clues:

Have you noticed the numbers on the map?

Think time zones.

The box has a Japanese flag and the number 19 on it. If it's 19:00 in Japan, then what time is it in the countries whose flags are also on the box?

And major thanks to CJ for posting the curtain thing. That was driving me crazy.

Sorry about the missing rating. I've just updated the entry.

Could someone please explain how the code works for the lock on the dresser in gigig. I've got three coloured cards and the "last" page looks like scribble!

Sorry for the double posting but I didn't realise that "last" had to be written "LAST"!!

Um, the ratings system says if a game has a single instance of the d-word or h-word it gets yellow, but Emergency Exit has the d-word in it and was rated green. Sorry to be a pain, but this seems inconsistent

gigig get frustating because some things you can't check before you 'activate' it through the forum posts. Else than that, both games are hilarious :) .

What a weird, little game! Not to mention simplistic, illogical and completely weak. i played the xit sign game and was so disappointed that I didn't even bother with the game-in-game nonsense. This stupid little adventure wasn't worth the time. I give it a D-.

So tell us, JIG: why exactly did you included this low-grade piece of trash on your website? It certainly doesn't measure up to the usual quality of games that we see here.

Reply

Oh, come on, Erwin. It wasn't that bad. -.-

Has anyone tried Game in game in etc? It seems to lock up for me and not let me search the forums further even after getting a blue card.
Little help maybe? Thanks!

Just look for the code in the walkthrough and voila!

I know nobod reads this anymore since it's been almost a year anyone left a comment, but still... I have the same problem Coldfrog mantioned two comments above me: however meticulously I follow the walkthru of GIGIG, I cannot seem to get past

getting the blue card.

The walkthru - both of them - say I should

go and read on the comments,

but it won't let me, but tells me I should go and search the room...

It's either that we both have a serious case of dyslexia or are illiterate so we cannot read the walkthrus well - or something has happened to the game before Coldfrog's comment - see, nobody complained about this before him/her, but now there seems to be a problem that prohibits us progressing from that point.
