JayEscape from IslandYour plane goes down on a mysterious and seemingly deserted island somewhere off the radar charts, and it is up to you to find a way to Escape from Island using only the resources available to you.

Simply move the mouse around each scene to locate positions to click. The mouse cursor will turn into a hand to alert you that something may be there. Arrow symbols are displayed when movement in that direction is possible.

Thought-provoking puzzles and a well-illustrated environment together create an atmosphere ripe for adventure and captivating gameplay. The game is the next in what is hopefully a long series of point-and-click adventure games by Aztec, the same developer(s) that created The Shrine, previously reviewed here last month.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

I've made a complete walkthrough for Escape from Island.
If you decide to post this game, please post the walkthrough for me and just give me some credit :) Here's the guide...

  1. Go left and pick up the fishing line then go back right.

  2. Go right again, then forward and pick up the shovel. Go back, then left.

  3. Forward, pick up the saw.

  4. Forward again, pick up the rope.

  5. Forward, poke the kitten (not necessary, but fun) then go left, get the pick.

  6. Forward, use the rope on the metal loop, then click on the rope to scale the cliff.

  7. Pick up the stone key, go right, pick up the bow and arrow, then return left.

  8. Click on the rope to get back up the cliff, then go right and pick up the knife.

  9. Go right again, then forward, and pick up the tank and the rod sticking out from the bamboo. Fill the tank by dragging it to the water.

  10. Go back, left, back, back, back, and left so you are at the burning plane again. Use the filled tank on the fire, get the zippo lighter. Also, use the pick on the rock above the plane and get the emerald green snack.

  11. Go right, light the statue's finger on fire with the zippo, right again, then forward and use the pick on the end of the wall and get the golden flake.

  12. Go back, left, forward, forward, forward (shoot the cat with the bow and he bats it away!), left, and light the statue's finger.

  13. Forward, then use the bow and arrow to aim at the bridge and shoot it down.

  14. Go forward and pick up the hook. Now combine the fishing line, rod, and hook.

  15. Go right and use the fishing pole in the water to catch a fish.

  16. Go left and forward, and give the bear the fish.

  17. Go right, light the statue's finger, and use the stone key on the far off door.

  18. Enter the door by going forward, and pick up the ruby key.

  19. Go back, left, back, right, and use the knife to cut the bear free.

  20. Go left and back and pick up the diamond key.

  21. Go right twice and light the fourth statue's finger on fire. They should all be lit and the ground will shake.

  22. Go left and back and cut down the tree the the cat is sleeping under with the saw. This gives you the log.

  23. Go back and right, then use the pick twice on the rock to destroy it.

  24. Go forward and open the door with the ruby key.

  25. Again, go forward, and pick up the golden staff.

  26. Go back, back, and left, then place the staff into the stone with the hole. Use the shovel on the spot that the light from the staff makes and obtain the purple orb.

  27. Go forward twice and use the log on the white tower. Enter the tower by clicking on the log.

  28. Place the orb in the hole, then put the diamond key in the small hole that appears. You've escaped the island, congrats! Now to escape those aliens....

(I'm not sure what the uses for the green snack and the gold flake are, but they do make a satellite appear at the ending screen. Perhaps that is all they do?)

It's a nice and appealing pnc. It's maybe a pity it's so much easier than The shrine. My 5 year old daughter (allthough a fervent point and clicker) just managed to do it in 19 minutes with only 2 clues from my side.

Reply

Nice game. Didn't find the green snack, but even if I had, I think there would still be a remaining free slot in the inventory (I found the gold flake too). Maybe there's something else...

Reply

Very fun game, but I'm as confused as anybody about the function of the green snack and the gold flake. Does anyone know?

Reply

I liked this one. Solved it in 17 minutes with only maybe 4 hints from the walkthrough (two of which were just for the emerald snack and gold flake). That's a personal accomplishment for me :P

I think the empty space left in the inventory at the end of the game is from the fishing pole. It disappears after it is used instead of just becoming deactivated like the rest of the inventory items.

Reply

The gold flake and green snack are probably going to be used in a future installment of the series.

Reply

Wasn't there also a useless green snack in the first Aztec game?

great game, the only problem is that the saw looks like a paint scraper.

Reply
bonzifan July 29, 2007 4:38 PM

nice game, without too much that'll only be solved by dillegently clicking every point on the screen. Dont think the island is uninhabited though!

Reply

What was that small remote beach area for?

I enjoyed this game a lot. Only needed a hint about 2 things. That's pretty good for me.

I LOVED this game. It didn't have annoying pixel hunts. Everything was logical, which is a rarity in these types of games.

Oh yeah, try shooting an arrow at the cat :)

Reply

How do you fill the tank?

Reply

Catss, you just need to drag the tank over a river.

Reply

The review picture maps out all paths!

Thanks for walkthrough

doh you mean you can put something other than petrol in a petrol tank? I just did not think of that.

Reply

surfmadpig: yeah, I think it is a paint scraper.

Reply

I won the game in 12 minutes flat! No walkthrough hints! I was pretty lucky! I hated torturing the poor kitty!

Reply

That was fun, although very easy. I finished it with no help(although I missed the flake and snack) and I usually go running to the walkthrough about three steps in. I liked that there was no random pixel hunting, though.

Reply
Kate Blanquette July 30, 2007 1:34 AM

One could try to shoot the poor kitty too... :( ew!

Great game...just a little short.

I dont know why you say this game was logical... there were random aliens and tools all over the "desserted" island.

It's a shame that so many developers fail to toe the line properly between making games that flow logically and also making them challenging. A sequence of events that the player has to accomplish that follows perfectly logically or expectedly is a sequence that is very easy or intuitive to reconstruct for the player: the game is easy. Many developers try to introduce difficulty by adding "pixel-hunting" or making it so that the player actions have impossibly unintended consequences so that it becomes more "difficult" to figure out what to do next. Of course, the more far-fetched you get, the closer your chances of DEDUCING the next action draw to impossible, and the less the game resembles an exercise in lateral thinking than a random clickfest.

What's a developer to do? I of course prefer the ones that make more sense, even when they're easier like this one (probably just sour grapes at the fact that I'm REALLY BAD at guessing what to do next when it's not logical.) I've simply begun to skip all the new Japanese room escape games that involve clicking everywhere along the edge of a bed because you KNOW you have to be able to look under it, they just made it really hard to figure out exactly where to click.

I think Skutnik of the Submachine series has it right. He tends to include thinking problems that don't involve random guessing but actually synthesizing clues from your environment into solutions for complex lock mechanisms for instance... and furthermore, he makes the journey through the puzzles into an artistic experience so that even when there isn't as much of a challenge to enjoy, there is at least a nice drawing to look at, or a mysterious story, and that's what makes you want to progress. This game has some of those elements, but to a much lesser degree as I found it mostly an exercise in just doing exactly what is expected.

Reply

My pick does not seem to be working.

Reply

I totally agree with elemento.

I beat the game in 16 minutes, and the only help I needed was what to do with the lighter. Quite frankly, I never would have guessed that the statues had to be lit on fire, otherwise the game was great.

I also have to comment on bunnyrounder's comment, as to 'why are there things all over this deserted island?'

That's another challenge of game design. You can ask any user/viewer/gamer to make one leap of faith, usually that leap of faith is something like 'magic exists' or 'there was an ancient alien civilization'. In this game, there have to be two, one is 'there are aliens' and the other is 'the aliens created a beacon that you could unlock'.

It's an enormous challenge (mind you, one I enjoy) to build a world where that happens, especially when you have to also balance between creative thinking and logical steps.

Once again, one of the reasons submachine is so good is that you only need one leap of faith, 'there are a number of alternate realities populated with ancient relics'.

All in all, this was a cute fun distraction, but with a little to abstract of an ending and a little too little of a challenge in creative thinking.

This game has one of my pet peeves:

On an island, you can only get water from a waterfall. Also, you're in a forest where you can only cut one specific tree. Which isn't the perfectly placed tree on the same screen where it's used, but completely random tree in another screen.

Reply

Not sure if it's imoprtant but....

If you go one screen down from the area where you tie the rope up there is a shadow with the same shape as the mark in the area where you find the bow

Reply

Sorry, but that was not a good adventure game.

Several combinations of items with world objects inexplicably didn't work until some arbitrary time (

purple key in stone door

), and some combinations seemed equally arbitrary

lighting stone statue fingers on fire?

.

And unless there's a reference I'm not aware of, the ending makes no kind of sense.

I am having a terrible time getting the pointer in just the correct click point. For example

getting the staff in the rock to get the orb. I have placed it all over the rock and it just snaps back to the inventory box.

I found this problem in several places.

Another example: The walkthru said to click on the rock above the airplane. The rock is huge. There is only one tiny little spot that it works and it looks like any other spot on the rock. Same with the place where the golden flake (great chips) is found. I tried over and over and over and finally found the sweet spot just before I was going to give up.

If it hadn't been for the problem of finding the correct pixels to click on, I would have been faster and might not have consulted the walk thru. I was understanding the logic but just couldn't click the right spots.

It is a cute and fun game all the same. :)

Reply

I apologize.

Put the staff in the hole of the little square thing on the path before the cat. Not in the hole of the thing that the orb goes to.

I did things out of order a little because I didn't consult the walk thru until total frustration set in. Except for finding it hard to find the correct place to click in a few places, this was a really nice and fun game.

I am NOT posting my time here. It is too embarrassing.

Reply

i finished in 17 seconds My personal best!

Reply

Can someone please tell me which part of the end wall am i supposed to click with the pixel in order to get the Gold Flake? I've tried clicking the entire wall to no avail.

Reply

In the final step, where is the hole in which i am supposed to insert the purple orb?

I am a newbie with respect to these escape games and find that most of them I need a walkthrough early on. I hate the pixel hunting and language barriers that so many have. This was nice and not too easy (I still needed walkthroughs). I am quite embarrassed because one of the posts says their 5 year old did it in 19 minutes with no hints. Well, according to the timer at the end, it took me 1 hour and 13 minutes to complete the game, although I had eaten some ham, fruit cocktail and drank a can of diet Mountain Dew, taking away from me around 10 to 15 minutes or so, but that was interesting how you needed to go up the tree and place the objects there and get sent up into Space as your escape? I thought that I'd be taking pieces from the airplane to make a raft or something like that to escape with, but it was fun anyway. This game, the island setting anyway, reminded me of another island game where you needed to make the right choices as you went along, and one choice affected another as if you increased the level right, it also increased the level next to you. I don't know if I could find that one again as I lost my favorites or bookmarks.

Reply

what do i do with the orb? and what does it mean "watch out for the purple"?

Bernie -- it's Irony, in my opinion. There was a flood of escape games back then (still is) and when I got to this ending, I laughed aloud.

lisa -- The purple orb?
Both are relevant to the end. (Actually the latter has resonance in the Easter egg in the *next* game.) Have you solved all the statues?

Wow, I didn't have to use the walkthrough completely for once! Except for a few parts, I didn't need the walkthrough.

I had to use the walkthrough to find out what to do with the staff after it's in the ground, how to get the two snacks, lighting the statue's fingers and getting the log

Very nice game, loved it! The ending made me burst out laughing. So random.

I like this game a lot. Looks good and just the right level for me - not too much clicking, fairly obvious items and clues, still requires a bit of lateral thinking but not too brain taxing. I take it farily leisurely (completed in 53 mins), which feels like a nice amount of time. It's the first time I've completed one without any reference to the walkthrough. I did spend a fair time walking round in loops trying to find the next step e.g.

using the lighters on the statues

. I enjoy it more taking my time, rather than frantically clicking everywhere and trying every combination of items to beat the clock...
